Chewer Cars - Page 2

Cocoa: I don't know if you're considering GM or not, but I've heard nothing but great things about the new Malibu. I personally know 3 people who own them and LOVE them, and I had one for a rental car while my car was in the shop (I liked it). I also had a Mazda 3 rental car about 2 months ago that was a damned fun little go-cart.

Never even glanced at the Golf. Interesting.
Itsa perfect city/suburban car as far as Im concerned.
its actually been a staple of Volkswagen for years

While it wasn't "mine," I loved it when I was driving this thing everyday.

Being able to go where ever you want whenever you want is pretty alluring.

2007 Dodge Charger. Love it, but it wears the tires down pretty quickly, even with regular rotation/balance service. This may be due in part to frequent car chases with Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane.

I've got an '05 Mazda 3 and I love it. I've put 85k on it since I bought it new (agreed on the "wouldn't buy new again" front, though), and haven't had any major service issues. My only complaint is that I got the "sport" package with the bigger tires, and the only thing that does is make it more expensive to replace them.

2009 Dodge Ram Sport Quadcab. I love it. I was mixed between it and a Challenger. The truck had everything the Challenger did (same hemi, options, interior, everything), and I use the utility of a truck unlike a lot of truck buyers so I got the truck. But every day I see a Challenger and wish I got it.
I was eyeing that Challenger too, Billy. It's just not practical for a Minnesota winter, so I ended up going the sensible route. As soon as I can swing having a fun summer car, though...

My next car is definitely going to be something funner. I will probably build something. I built a Gran Torino when I was in college, and that was fun.

Damn nice. My brother has a 1970 Buick GS 455 convertible that we take out on Summer evenings. I kinda hope that he ends up selling it to me if I don't end up getting a Challenger.

I'll sell you my crappy Mustang.

My next vehicle is going to have a diesel engine. I want to run on biofuel and make the world smell like tacos.

Who has a CVT transmission? It's coming standard in a lot of rides these days.
Yeah, the A3 diesel gets over something like 42MPG highway.

Edit:

Also, does your CVT 'fake shift.' I've heard that some car manufacturers put fake gear shifts into it because people were disconcerted by the continuous acceleration.

2003 Honda Accord LX (didn't care for leather seats). Got it new with help from parents on the down payment, but paid it off in 5 years myself. The rush was due to the fact that the hand-me-down 89 Ford Taurus station wagon (that gave me such grief) finally died.

No interest in fancy cars. Utility is the name of the game and my Honda's been pretty satisfactory. Though at certain times, I have been tempted to want something more 'fun.' Foolishness!

I will admit, I've never been fond of my Accord's clunky ass.

I drive a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix. The only major problem we had with it was some engine issue where it was fucked shifting between third and fourth. Other then that it hasn't been too bad... until within the past year. When I turn off the car the key can get stuck in the ignition. So I either have to a) turn the car back on and turn it off and take a chance it "unlocked" the key, b) move the key forward and backward (without turning the car on) until I hear a click or c) put my foot on the brake and move the stick shift around until I hear a click. I've had a remote car starter installed and when I use that it seems to not lock the key in the ignition. I guess it's because I don't have to go all the way forward to turn the car on when I put the key in.

A co-worker has a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am and she said she had the same problem and it cost a fortune to get fixed. Another co-worker said his mom has a Grand Prix roughly in the same year bracket (I think those models were from 1997-2004?) and she had the same problem. And then I found out from our local GM dealership that its common in those models. Then I thought that if it's common shouldn't that be a defect and shouldn't they fix it for free? There was also a recall on those models not too long ago for a spark plug issue that could cause an engine fire.

Other then those issues the car has surprisingly held up pretty well for a GM car. But I'm also pretty good with getting regular oil changes and maintenance services done and when they catch something getting that taken care of ASAP.

So what it comes down to is that I like how big my car is; not too big but not to small and I like having a V6. But I'd never buy a North American car ever again. I figure whenever I go to buy another car it'll be a Toyota.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that the AC/Heater had issues too for a bit. Thankfully it was summer and I typically drive with the windows down but that sucked in terms of how much it cost to get fixed.

It's to be expected obviously, and with good reason, but I love the total absence of all NYC chewers in this thread. It's like they go 'car? wuzzat?' and just keep on walking in a hazy, drunken state because they're spending all of that car payment, insurance money and repair costs on booze. (And also stupid rent payments).

Do miss old 04 Mercury Sable, clunky and fuel inefficient as she was.
I have a 2002 Chevy Impala that I've put over a 100,000 miles on and it's still going strong.

In January my girlfriend and I got a brand new Ford Fusion which I call Mr. Fusion and it's really great on gas and is a smooth ride. Definitely recommended if you want to save on gas. The one thing is we got the fully loaded one with a spoiler and sun roof, and it looks awesome. We've seen bare ones and they look damn ugly.

If public transportation was on par with the NYC subway system here, I'd consider giving up my wheels.

I'm way too much of a "car guy" to completely give up having a car, but damn was it nice living in Toronto and the car being an option.

Hey, I chimed in, you! Some NYers do need their cars - not me, of course. But my SIL has had a car since back when the kids were little, and has always just had one for necessity, even though she's in Brooklyn. And the boyfriend, plus my other friend and his family, are both out on Long Island, where although it's NY, you do need a car.

I don't know a ton of NYers in the actual city/Manhattan with cars, no, but a huge chunk of people in all of the outer boroughs have cars. I live in Queens, and believe me, my boyfriend has to circle all around the neighborhood to find a parking spot - everyone out here has cars it seems.
I had a 96' Honda Civic in Brooklyn up until early summer. Then I ditched it. Good car but don't miss it. I drive Zipcars now when necessary.

BTW, I drove an Altima hybrid via Zip and thought it was way cool. I also drove a Matrix and thought the gear shift was made of plastic.

I've got a 2000 Jeep Cherokee that will (FINALLY) be paid off in the summer (obviously I bought it used). The gas mileage sucks, but it's up over 100 thousand miles with no serious engine trouble, and it's hauled around every bit of the band's equipment save for the drums for over 5 years.
It really does suck that this country only has about a dozen cities with transportation infrastructure that isn't put to shame by the more ambitious Third World nations. However, if you absolutely must buy a car, do yourself and humanity in general a favor and buy a used car that runs on diesel and have one of these installed.

In fact, there seems to be a few people who have older cars in this thread that run on diesel. Installing one of these in it and making it the primary mode of transport by car would save a lot of money over the course of the year.

That's the plan for my next car.
Haha. This thread makes my car feel sad. '96 Monte Carlo with 227,000 miles on it. Brand new transmission, engine top-end overhaul, about to have new tires, brakes and shocks. Needs a paint job. Cost $1,000. I love my shitty car.
I'm part of the problem.

My wife's job requires her to carry around ungodly amounts of crap in her car daily, AND she needs room for the kids, just in case. She drives a Honda Pilot.

I'm 6'7", and can't fit comfortably in most cars. I also cart both kids around constantly. I drive a Honda Odyssey minivan.

The saving grace is that we're a mile from the grocery store and two miles from my son's school, and I'm a stay-at-home dad, so I average less than 7 miles/day. I can go a couple of weeks between fill ups.

Hey Chewers, just wanted to give you guys an update on my car situation. My husband ended up getting a used 2009 Lancer GTS at a great price.

I'm still looking. I feel like this is a great shot to get something that I really, really want, but I'm being wishy washy and having the worst time deciding. I will probably get my car either today or tomorrow.

I'm torn between an Element, an Altima, and I fell in love with Volkswagen (and not the Beetle either!) after looking at the pics here and then going back to the dealerships to check out the rides.

We'll see.

I've got a 2.0 Volkswagen Golf Match TDi, it goes like shit off a shovel and has the tightest handling, perfect city car and just real fun to drive.

Great fuel economy too, I used to have a Daewoo Lanos which was a total piece of shit, I was almost happy when it got wrote off, heh.

We used to have a really pimping 96 volvo station wagon, with a turbo. An 850. It was really decked out (my half brother gave it to my dad when he sold his company for 8$ million back in the 90s). Mahogany paneling, etc. I loved that car finally sold it last year, sadly.

But it's so hip and cool! *grandma*

I just wanted something original that you didn't see parked on every corner in every suburb.

The Altima is so sexy though.

Cocoa, the VW TDIs are the way to go. One of the best cars I've ever driven.

I'm driving an 09 Matrix because we got a helluva deal but the Jetta or Golf TDI would've been my other choice.

BTW, the conversion to a diesel that uses biofuel doesn't actually do the environment any good. You're taking a crop that should be used to feed people and feeding your car with it. Therefore you're taking more land out of commission by using it for a not intended purpose.

Now if you can fill up with used/cleaned grease then it's much better for everyone.

VW TDIs are outstanding vehicles.

I drive a Civic Type R. It isn't practical and I don't care.
