Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks‎ (DS)

Anyone play this yet?

I got it this weekend and was probably going to start it up tonight. Phantom Hourglass started great and then about 30% in, decided to just start sucking. I'm hoping there is an improvement here.

I still haven't gotten past the stealth mission near the beginning because fuck stealth missions in a Zelda game.

Early stealth mission? Christ.

I can hear the whistle in my head already.
Yeah, I was thinking a little while ago that I kinda want this, but a stealth mission? Fuck that shit. I'm already bored enough with Zelda games as it is.
Yeah, if it turns out to be diet Zelda as Phantom Hourglass was turning out to be, it's not worth the investment. I am going through Wind Waker which I haven't played since it came out. The game's nearly seven years old and the game is still stunning. I'd love to see a Wii update just to have it in widescreen.
If you're talking about the stealth mission in the very beginning at the castle, its a very short, simple stealth mission. However, like Phantom Hourglass, you have to avoid the Phantoms and Phantom Eyes in the Spirit Tower until you can take them down and possess them. I don't normally love stealth missions but here I don't mind 'em.

So far, I'm digging the game and finding it a bit more imaginative than Phantom Hourglass.
To be fair, it was late and I kept fucking up while drawing the path for Zelda to run, but my own personal hatred of stealth missions doesn't help.
You're just a shitty Link, Jake.
Link's been a shitty Link for years now. I just remembered I really don't want to pretend I'm excited to find the fucking boomerang for the ten billionth time.
Gohma's weakness is the boomerang in the dungeon where you get the boomerang. There's talk that the next console Zelda is supposed to drastically change the formula, which probably just means you'll get the hookshot way earlier.

Jake, does this one start out slow as shit like all the others? I think the last one that really hit the ground running was Link to the Past, which is still my favorite.
My 7 year old is digging it. Of course, he doesn't have any problems passing the stealth missions like Jake.

Target is selling this for $25 this week. Great deal. Although I probably won't buy it until next year.

This game kinda blows. The dungeons are simple, the flute mechanic is totally broken, and the train segments are every bit as exciting as riding on a real train.

I'm never buying another "vehicle" Zelda again.
What if the next one is The Legend of Zelda : DEATH TANK 3000?

Nope. Zelda games always ramp up the pacing but this one's fairly quick. I'm not sure how many hours I've played (maybe 12-15 hours) but I've only got 2 major dungeons left.

The train shit is awful, and all I did was go to Castle Hyrule. How much more train action is there?

Well because the game has Link on a train, I'm guessing there is a shitload of steamy train action.

The Legend of Zelda : HE'S GOT AN APACHE, GANON NOW WHAT MOTHERFUCKER

What's broken about the flute? I saw something posted to this effect elsewhere but I didn't want to read an assload of game spoilers to find out the details.

I've read that it's played by blowing into your microphone, which might be a pain if you like to play in noisy places or don't blow hard enough (which is never a problem for Brad).

Nuh uh YOUR mom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, I don't get that. Its actually the most intuitive instrument a Zelda game has implemented. Now the game is not very deep, so there isn't a ton to do with it. Also, I'm kinda burning through the main quest and skipping all the exploration.

The basic songs are easy enough, but there are four points in the game where you have to accompany someone else in a song, and the last three took me at least a dozen tries each. The problem is the microphone is so imprecise. Sometimes a note wouldn't register, and other times it would play two notes in a row, forcing you to restart the whole thing.

To the game's credits, the boss fights are cool, and while none of the dungeons are hard, the last two are complicated enough to be fun.

But goddamn, that train sucks. And as the game progresses, it forces more and more mandatory fetch quests down your throat. If you need to put out a fire, first you have to backtrack to the snow world and find an ice builder, then drive the ice builder to a different spot on the map, then transport his ice back to the fire world before it can melt, then find a different route because monsters have appeared on the tracks. And once you finally get there, a villager is kind enough to inform you that, hey, they need more fucking ice!

It's mindless, plodding busywork that does nothing except artificially extend the game's length, and it happens over and over again.

About to go to the first real dungeon and the game is Phantom Hourglass II, with hopefully some of the redundancy (especially of the Tower of Spirits) removed.

I might drop this if the dungeons and bosses fall flat.
Yeah, the ice fetch quest kinda sucks.
Overly simplistic dungeons was the chief flaw of Phantom Hourglass as well, so colour me unsurprised.
I'm thinking the relatively poor Twilight Princess reception scared them off from trying complexity ever again.
Twilight Princess is a masterpiece compared to this dreck. They've yet to touch Ocarina of Tme.

I ran into this with the first play-along. I'd rather play Jake's flute than Zelda's. Simply awful.

I just want a game where you can finally beat that Goddamn jogging guy on Hyrule Field.

Oh a fun side effect of Spirit Tracks, hand-cramps from guiding Link, Zelda and that fucking train around.

No, no, guys, fuck that d-pad and buttons, I want to awkwardly hold an undersized stylus and draw on a awkwardly placed small-screen for 10 - 15 hours. Thanks again.
So glad someone gave me their copy due to their DS breaking. I can't wait to go hand it back to them, suddenly feint left, and throw it into the street.
Even though it's designed for old people, I wouldn't mind getting that DS XL just for that reason.
So the last boss is a 15-minute game of Pac-Man. Literally. Except all the ghosts are faster than you, and they can change direction without warning, and you're stuck on the Cocksucker Express, the world's saddest little train.

I hate this game too much to finish it. First time that's happened since Zelda II.
Not Spirit Tracks (thankfully), but Zelda-related:

In the Ocean Realm.

This would be a fun time waster but for the awful flute mechanic and the mind-numbing train driving. Do I really need to spend 10 minutes bouncing back and forth between the bridge-maker and the treasure douche (that is if the bomb trains don't pull a sophisticated pincer movement on my train)?

Been stuck in the Fire Realm since my daughter was born.

I'd rather be changing dirty diapers than do that deliver the ice mission over and over again. Way to put some deep thought into the mission, guys.

I can't wait for the dig the trench mission in the new Wii Zelda later this year.

oh yeah this game's out I should pick it up huh

But on a magic train ride, to a magical fantasy world.

While delivering ice.
Weird thing about the flute: I was playing this on an airplane and whenever I'd use the flute it would blow the notes automatically, constantly. Something to do with the air pressure inside the cabin or something?

Ambient noise or a passing breeze will cause the flute to register a note. That's on top of the game not being able to distinguish rhythm (clearly designed by white people).

I watched the COOP show review yesterday, which gave it a glass half full of platinum magic dust review. I like the show and all, but they couldn't have been more off about the game. It was like they had been given a very detailed briefing of the game and shown in game action, but never played the game.
