Big 10 looking into expanding to 12 teams

They want that championship game money. And to not fall off the radar at the end of every football season like they have been lately.

Among the schools whom the Big Ten might like to court are Rutgers, Pittsburgh and Syracuse, according to the Tribune report. Cincinnati and Louisville also could be considered.
They'd be crazy not to make a hard push at Notre Dame either. Yeah, I know, Notre Dame has its own network and its own BCS deal, but if they want to be competitive and relevant again, they need to get into a conference.

I'd like the Big Ten to get any of those teams. We know Notre Dame won't join, cause they've already declined several times. If Cincy, Pitt or Louisville are down, I say hell yeah.

Pitt or Cincy make more sense geographically and rivalry-wise.

The poor Big East. As soon as things start going well, another conference comes and raids their cupboard.

In truth, the Big Ten could really use Cincinnati should they decide to continue winning following the departure of Brian Kelly. Ohio State ain't doing a whole lot these days and Penn State rarely lives up to the ranking.
James is right, ND will never join because they're a bunch of uppity douchebags.

Cincy could probably use it the most. Pitt by all rights should be stinking rich.
I think Pitt is the better fit overall, but I don't know if Pitt will want to leave the Big East, given its basketball advantages.
If Pitt joins the Big 10, Paterno will explode into a million ancient Italian-American bits. Back in the 80s, Pitt's refusal (because of basketball) to join the conference Paterno was trying to form led directly to the collapse of those efforts AND Penn State's joining of the Big 10. Paterno's still bitter.

Hey, it's happened before.

That is incredibly awesome.

Pitt is probably the best fit academically and geographically, but in terms of tv revenue doesn't bring much to the table as Penn State does enough for the region.

If I remember reading correctly, Louisville and Cincy aren't academically equipped for the Big Ten (and yes the Big Ten will actually look at that).

Rutgers and Syracuse, while geographically out there, would provide some east coast dollars the Big Ten is out to get (and have the academics to back it up).

Rutgers who would never have to worry about selling-out their stadium/arenas again with all the Big Ten alumni in the area. Plus it would ensure Schiano never leaves and bolster recruiting.

For the Big Ten they could tap the NYC market, which might explode with legitimate college football.

The Big Ten could probably cut Michigan loose, as the school is clearly dead weight from a sports perspective at this point. That would free up space for Rutgers and Syracuse. Right Cassady?
How cute.

Did you come up with that before or after reading R.L. Stein's latest?
Yeah, Syracuse was the back-up plan when Notre Dame balked at joining back in the eighties. The Big 10 has been lusting after the NYC area since then. Let's say they join; how do you guys see the divisional breakdown?
No matter who joins, Michigan and Ohio State have to be paired together. Having them play twice a year would be awful (look at me assuming they'd win their divisions every year).

I've seen East and West & North and South, but really they should try to make sure both divisions are balanced across the Football and Hoops (and pair Michigan and OSU together).

While I think Notre Dame is the team that should join (but I know they never would), I love the idea of Rutgers in the Big 10. Great choice.

Can Cincy continue to be a power without Kelly? Pitt would be my choice.

And you'd have to keep Michigan/Ohio State together. I'd spilt the 12

Ohio State
Michigan
Michigan State
Purdue
Indiana
Minnesota

Iowa
Penn State
Illinois
Northwestern
Wisconsin
New Team(Pitt, Cincy, Rutgers)

Someone will bitch no matter who they go with.

So, after all this is said and done...could you still get by calling this the "Big 10"? I mean, there's 12 teams, and there's already a "Big 12" conference. Alternatives? "Big 10-ish"? "Big 10-or-so"? "Big Dozen"?

The Really Big 10
Someone is going to have to get extra creative and insert a hidden "12" somewhere in the new Big 10 logo.

The 12

The Big Twenlve

The Better Big 12 (just for the controversy)

I thought Big North could work, but there already is a Big North conference. Big 12 is obviously out. Maybe something with the Great Lakes, since almost all the schools are in states that border the lakes?

If this goes through, I wonder if the Pac 10 will follow suit, and who they'd add if they did.

The Dirty Dozen.

I like Mattioli's; however, the (real) Big 12 apologist in me requires me to answer The Ripoffs?

The Great Lakes Conference (or Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) is a D-2 conference.

I like the Great Northern Conference, but that may only be because that's the name of my old HS conference.
