Chronical's of Riddick

I was reading up on the prequels to Pitch Black and found myself somewhat dissapointed.

Pitch Black was one of my favorite horror movies in a long time. It was atmospheric, the setting, the use of light and sound, and the action was great. And it came with no pre-conceptions to get in the way. I went into the movie not knowing what to expect and left happy.

Now I read more of the news about it and find out that it will not be a horror movie anymore and will now switch to the action/adventure genre. I'm not sure what to think of that, because it was a great horror movie and now I think they may try to move it more to the style of recent Vin flicks like Fast and the Furious and XXX.

I hope I am wrong and it will still be as dark and interesting as Pitch Black, but I just don't know. I just want something that will be close to the mood of the original and not veer off into a more commericial (i.e. popcorn) direction.

Well, I always saw Pitch Black as a sci-fi movie first, and horror second. More Aliens than Alien. I'd actually prefer them to do something more adventure based in any new films, as I don't know how much mileage there is in the idea of "Vin lands on planet of monsters, fights monsters, wins".

So, new direction = good...unless they have him snowboarding on a tea tray. That would just be silly.

Snowboarding on a tea tray is silly... snowboarding on an ironing board however...

The Pitch Black *sequels* are written and directed by Twohy, not the guys (Cohen, etc) that did xxX. Now, while I'm sure the exact same studio goal exists of making the most amount of money possible, I'd like to think that the road to those dollars will be drastically different. That's not to say that Twohy isn't afraid to hit a pop note once in a while, but I think it's very unlikely that he'll make the whole movie one long loveletter to Joe Sixpack like Xxx was.

It should be really interesting to see how these movies turn out. It will be impossible for them to reuse the things that made PB so cool (the crash, Cole Hauser, the monster, etc). Really, all they have to hang this movie on is a somewhat interesting character played by a love-him-or-hate him actor. 'Course, they had less to hang XxX on and that was still a fun movie that made a pile of dough.

But fingers crossed that this turns into a huge franchise... I got the fansite up and running, and daddy's waiting to cash in on that phat lewt from Allposters.com *snicker*.

ASAIK the new films won't be prequels but sequels, i.e. set after the events of Pitch Black. There were numerous plans to do a follow-up film to Pitch Black and one of those was supposed to be a prequel that would have told the story of how Riddick came to be imprisoned and how Cole Hauser's character chased him around etc. Could have been fun but they dropped that plan. There was actually a script written with that storyline (by David Hayter) and that was also called "Chronicles of Riddick", so that is probably where all the confusion about the sequel/prequel thing comes from. Then, after Hayter's draft was ditched they hired some other guy (or guys) who wrote a new script that as basically a total rehash of Pitch Black with Vin landing on another planet and fighting some other monsters that can only see in the dark. For some time they even planned to team him up with that annoying rapper who was also in Fast and the Furious!

BUT THANK GOD THEY GOT RID OF ALL THOSE CRAPPY DRAFTS and went for what Twohy had pitched to Universal right after the first movie: an all new trilogy featuring the Riddick character, an "Evil Star Wars" (and that's a quote from Twohy!) that would take him to several new planets, have him confront multiple enemys and kick all kinds of ass. The studio suits passed on that idea but now that Vin has hit it big they thought again and decided to go with it.

AGAIN: THANK GOD!!!

Yes, the films will be more action/adventure oriented but they will definitely be SCI-FI flicks and not some lame pseudo-tough "urban" crap like FATF and xXx.

These films will also have a PG-13 rating (that was in the contract) but Twohy has promised to go as far as that rating will allow him to go. So there will probably be some horror but more like the horror in LOTR, which also kicks quite a lot of ass for a PG-13 triology.

In the end, only time will tell ...

Starving......that news just pissed on my parade

but thinking about it.....I don't really know how Ridds' back story could be horror based

They aren't using that script anymore. It was debunked at Dark Horizons.

PEACE OUT!
