Adaptation

I've been rewatching a lot of my favorite movies of the decade, and this is one I probably haven't seen since it first came out on DVD. I was pretty young when it came out and I had no real knowledge about McKee or the standard screenplay format so revisiting it has been kind of fascinating. Cage is pretty fantastic in it, and it really makes me miss Cage the actor (I still haven't seen Bad Lieutenant).

So how what about the ending? I love it, but I can see how it frustrates people. I feel like Kaufman sets it up from the conversation with McKee and anything else just wouldn't be quite as satisfying.

I just realized 'The 3' is a comparison/contrast with the fact that Kaufman (character) writes himself into the Orchid Thief adaptation. Boy, that Kaufman (real) is a smart guy.

Personal anecdote: In high school I worked long and hard outlining a screenplay about a victim who turns out to also be the murderer. Not only that, but there were moments I'd frantically write down "Oo, THIS would be amazing if it happened!" only to stare in confusion and horror the next day at my notes. When I saw these things happen in the film, I cracked up and no one in the room knew why.

John Laroche: Then, sure enough, they found this moth with a twelve-inch proboscis. Proboscis means "nose," by the way.
Susan Orlean: I know what "proboscis" means.
John Laroche: Yeah, let's not get off the subject. This isn't a pissing contest.

Loved Cooper's performance. I laughed pretty hard at this moment.

The best movie ever made about the creative process.

Though it focuses on writing specifically, anyone who has dabbled in any kind of art form can relate. The film is so precise and truthful in how it approaches its topic that I don't think it will ever be equaled.

It's an amazing piece of work.

It is an amazing work. I know people who miss the McKee act 3 thing, so the change in tone is jarring to them. I love the novel, and every time I watch the film, I think about how you could adapt that novel straight out. I crack up at the synchronized dial tone humming.

As a whole, this motion picture is nothing short of cinematic perfection. Jonze, Kaufman, the glorious cast, and Burwell's achingly beautiful score anchoring the film.

Sigh.
