SWM desperately seeking horror

Went over to Suncoast today because it was triple point day and basically fought for a little over an hour fighting to find something to buy (ended up walking out with Texas Chainsaw 2 and Ravenous). Now that just feels so wrong....I need something new, something fresh, something that I have never seen before but will want to see again and again. i still have that craving, but right now it feels we are in a temporary dry spell with horror at the retailstores. So now I must turn my head look out across the horizon, turn my eyes to lands across the sea. But what to get?
I've been looking at Battle Royale seriously, I've seen (on ebay) stuff like The Eye, Phone and a few others that have caught my attention. Sonow i turn toyouse guys-what is really top of the line stuff, gimme, like...your top three picks for import horror (no PAL or anything outside of R! or R0) and why? What did they do that you would recommend them?
The only other stipulationI impose on you folks is...(sorry guys) no Ring. I'm gonna try Ringu when it is released here and don't want any of the other until I give that one a shot (again sorry-I was none to trhilled with the Dreamworks remake)
Help a poor (single) white man!

Battle Royale is a must. Don't let the hype get to you, this really is a great flick.

Also, I second Versus. Though it's longer than it should be and the pacing is slow, the style is cool and the action is great.

Evil Dead Trap is another good flick. It's out right now on R1, and it's got some good atmosphere and though the ending is frigin' wierd, it's still pretty good.

I think it's safe to say Battle Royale is a given. There's a seller on ebay named stiller66@aol.com and he has a lot of good Asian DVDs that are region 1 and are priced really well. That's where I got my R1 copies of both Battle Royale and Ring 2. Definately look him up.

Although not "new" per say, here are some films I recommend:

FEMALE CONVICT SCORPION: JAILHOUSE 41 - breathtaking surreal visuals, one of my favorites films of all-time

VIJ - Russian film about witches, bizarre and unlike anything I've ever seen ... Excellent ...

TORSO - Italian giallo, circa 1974 .. Incredible female cast, and the final reel is excellent

PEEPING TOM - Not to be confused with the 1960 Michael Powell classic ... Kinky Category 3 film from Hong Kong about a serial killer and his fascination with women's legs ... From the late 1990's

I've seen both 'Battle Royale' and 'The Eye' and they are both excellent. Go with those.

After those two, I'd go with:

Audition
The last 30 minutes of 'Audtion' are harrowing (to say the least) but the first 50 minutes fall into the category of romantic comedy/drama making the ending all the more freaky.

Tell Me Something
This is another good Region 1(or is it 0) flick that involves a serial killer. Good stuff as long as you don't think too hard. The last 20 minutes are puzzling.

Audition is my favorite Japanese horror film right now, the direction is outstanding and yeah, the last 30 minutes are a trip!

Suspiria & Opera are two of the best movies by Argento and are classics already.

Ginger Snaps, Dog Soldiers, Evil Dead Trap

Session 9, feardotcom (the story sucks but the visuals, art direction and cinemetography are sweet!)

Jason X (total spoof on itself and it's actually pretty entertaining.

Habit & Wndigo - the 2nd & 3rd installments of Fessenden's trilogy of terror, I haven't seen the first.

PI & Requium for a Dream - Aronofsky is a mad genious

So far, Battle Royale is a definate ( thanksfor the stiller66 info-actually got some jakcichanstuff from him before)asitseems that everyone says this is a must. Versus I got andloved it. That was just sucha weird mix; zombies, swordplay and that stylized gunplay. I'velentittomany and have yet to hear a nay-sayer.
With Audition-Hollywood video has this movie, soIthinkiwill give it a shot through them (unless of course there is a more complete version outthere that a Hollywoodvideo would not carry.
I tried PI and could not workwith theflick, but Requiem is so good and SOO HARD watch. I ownit, but have watched it only once as its just disturbing and feels so real. Almostwanna wash your hands after watching it (poor jennifer) I do truly applaud the actors in this for what they put in and actually doing the movie.
Argento stuff I have seenand own some (great flicks) but does anyone think he may be losing his touch? Strendalh Syndrome? Sleepless? I dunno kids...
Keep em coming, I wanna get a couple flicks totied me over till the next big rush.

Well, keeping it easy to find... maybe even get to use your points at Suncoast... (I know i do! ).

Brotherhood of the Wolf.
Picked this up the other day and watched it in english for the first time. the dubbing is superb. Takes nothing away from the films original french inflection. A beautiful film with an excellent mystery.

Ginger Snaps.
try for the canadian release i am told, but I was really pleasantly surprised by this one. i look forward to the sequel... (and damnnit, i am convinced her mom knew all along).

Brotherhood has a packed Canadian DVD as well as Ginger Snaps. The Canadians somehow worked a deal with some studios to get extra content put into their versions of some films.

The version of 'Audition' that I saw was the unrated version. The copy that Blockbuster carries is rated R (not sure about Hollywood Video). I don't know the differences but I'd stick with the unrated version which can be purchased at Best Buy.

I'm willing to be my entire collection that Hollywood does NOT carry the unrated version. They claim to have this policy about not carrying movies that go unrated, but yet they have the Kings of Comedy unrated? I could see it some cases (though I do not agree with it) but my gods, they get stupid with some of this stuff. I mean, what do they thinkis going to be in the unrated version American Pie? A Shannon Elizabeth splooge bath? damn but do i miss the mom and pop privately owned videostores that Blockbuster and Hollywood ran out of business.
oh yeah,BTW-dog Soliders, own it, love it-Ginger Snap, bought it on the words of you kids and was thankful for-Session 9, FANFUCKINGTASTIC!-Brotherhood Of The Wolf, great flick wanted the 3 disk version though.
And lastly, for those Suncoast peopleout there, do you get so overly excitedwhen you get that 5 or 10 dollar coupon you have to spend it THAT VERY DAY or is it just me(i get more shitty movies thatway...)(shaking head sadly)
