I was a fan of the creators' other efforts (My So Called Life and Once and Again), so I needed to check this out on DVD. Turns out it's pretty damn good, though not without some serious growing pains in the first 2/3 of the season.
I'm hoping there's some other people here who know the show, since I'm interested in seeing some different opinions.
Is anyone else as freaked out by Gary as I am? In his first few appearances, his mane of hair did 99% of the acting. His wild bodily tics kept the hair in near constant motion. I think he's supposed to be charmingly "quirky", but he comes off more like a speed freak. The entire cast appears jacked up on pure neuroses and frantic worry half the time, but with Gary it's a constant affliction. A few questions linger: Did people perceive Gary as being a normal person in the late 80s, or ever? Has anyone else actually acted like this ever, in the history of humanity?
The episode where they show him being a total asshole to Melissa (the Onion Bagels incident) did a little bit to make him more interesting, but by season's end he is still far beyond redemption. He is also tied with Melissa for the most horrible fantasy sequence appearances.
I have more thoughts on the rest of the cast, but I'll wait and see if I'm all alone out here first.
