Russia to remake "Armaggedon"

Only in real life, people!

"Russia's space agency chief said Wednesday a spacecraft may be dispatched to knock a large asteroid off course and reduce the chances of earth impact, even though U.S. scientists say such a scenario is unlikely.

Anatoly Perminov told Golos Rossii radio the space agency would hold a meeting soon to assess a mission to Apophis. He said his agency might eventually invite NASA, the European Space Agency, the Chinese space agency and others to join the project.

When the 270-meter (885-foot) asteroid was first discovered in 2004, astronomers estimated its chances of smashing into Earth in its first flyby, in 2029, at 1-in-37."

There was a discovery/science channel special on this asteroid a week or two ago. Although I found it fascinating, I can't think of anything they talked about other than the fact that if it doesn't hit us, it will at least be visible to the naked eye when it passes by.... and the fact that they haven't developed the technology to prevent it...yet.

Anatoly must have caught the special on his DVR and freaked the fuck out. Ha!

Im pretty sure their strategy is pretty much strapping peter Stormare to a rocket, give him a lead pipe and firing him at that big space rock.
Cause thats how you do asteroid deflection in russia.

All I know is if those Russkie bastards fuck up & send the thing on to a collision course it might not otherwise have been on via their meddling, I'm gonna be PISSED.

That is EXACTLY what I thought when I heard the story. I read about the asteroid months ago, and while it will get close, in the cosmic sense, it WILL NOT hit us. Yet Russia has to act all macho and send up a unnecessary intercept mission? From what I've heard, even if we had a killer asteroid headed our way, we cannot be certain we'd be able to deflect it. Why mess with one that won't hit us? Couldn't Putin just end up fragmenting it, or redirecting it? Russian engineering is not something I'd want to trust the fate of the world with

In Soviet Russia, asteroid deflects you.

This smells like a SPECTRE plot. Someone investigate this!

It doesn't matter who they send up. Because you know, whether it's Russian parts or American parts, they're all made in Taiwan.

Putin is no longer president of Russia.

I guess in principal it would be worthwhile to test these tactics & equipment on an asteroid that we KNEW wasn't going to hit us, and was sufficiently far from a collision course that there wasn't much chance we could deflect it into earth's path. But on one that's this close, EPECIALLY with the Russians leading the mission, it seems like a recipe for disaster.
