Getting a new cell soon: Blackberry or iPhone?

What one should I get? If I were to get a Blackberry it would be the Storm 2 or the iPhone is the other option. Both do what I would need them to do. Play music, email, watch videos (the screen on the iphone is bigger) and internet access. I'll pay the same monthly plan for both. So is there really any pros/cons to either? Or would they virtually be the same?

I love my iPhone. If I handled business on my phone I might lean Blackberry, but every friend of mine who has a Blackberry drools over my iPhone.
Well you don't live in NY or Frisco it appears, so I'd say iPhone is your best call. Nothing comes close to touching the app store, the UI is still the best (Google's working on it, but not on Blackberry's). The internet is still most gracefully implemented on an iPhone, as is music/video playback. I don't know the differences on battery life and such, but I don't think there's a huge disparity.

Here are good reviews of both: iphone / storm and an overall smartphone comparison. Poke around there and see what grabs you.

At the end of the day though, just be amazing and buy an iPhone.

There are rumors of an imminent iphone refresh within the next month and a half (5 megapixel camera), and as always, the yearly june roll out of the next generation iphone is just around the corner.

Go iphone, but hold out till june. my phone is being held together with tape just to get me there.

If you end up spending a significant amount of time in San Francisco, I would strongly advise never using the signifier 'Frisco.' People go apeshit over that.
The same people who go apeshit over "Cali"?

I think that you should go with the best provider over the best phone. The phone will be outdated a few weeks after you get it (always changing, always upgrading, and there's always something newer and more exciting), but you will be stuck with the cell company for two years.
iPhone, no question. Do not think twice, just head to the nearest Apple store.
If you want to make phone calls, the Blackberry. Otherwise, iPhone.

Speaking from experience? I'll be making some sort of upgrade next year and I'd love to hear more. Currently with Verizon and the LG EnV2 (which I love).
I like my Storm 2 on Verizon. I would say the iPhone on the non phone features is better than it, but I'd say the Storm 2 is more competitive than I thought.

Also at least the camera has a Flash, was surprised the iPhone doesn't have it.

I'm more curious about the Android based phones, so I would research about that too.
Not to make your decision too complicated, but I had to share... my cousin works for Google and many of the employees received their own copy of their latest "iphone killer" right before the holidays. So I got a chance to play with it while on vacation. Pretty much everything in this hands-on preview is true. I won't really try to sell you on it other than the fact that it is supposed to be carrier-agnostic (seriously, anything to compete with AT&T's shitty mobile service makes me happy) and it loads web pages like CHUD almost as fast as a PC. And if you wait a few weeks you'll get a chance to buy one too. It comes out really soon.

They'd both be on the same provider so that's not an issue. And the plan I would get is a pretty decent one and it's the same plan for both.

I've read about it and it does seem interesting but there's no set launch date for Canada.

So... it's looking like the iPhone is winning. Interesting.

Verizon has the Storm, AT&T has the iPhone. You have to choose between the two.

Edit: Oh wait, you're in Canada. Neeeeevermind!

In that case, get the iPhone. I'm not an Apple fanatic, but if you have a choice between the two and you're getting it for the same price, then you should go ahead and invest in the best phone.

iPhone. I love mine with the passion of a hundred burning suns!
I mean, it's an easy choice - if AT&T service is great where you are, then get the iPhone, no question. But if AT&T sucks, get the Storm 2. I had the iPhone, and got rid of it because it can't hold a call around here worth a damn. It's a great device otherwise, but you know, as a *phone*, not so much. I switched to Verizon, and just recently got the Storm 2, and I freaking LOVE it.

But, like I said - if AT&T is good where you are, go for the iPhone - it's also much cheaper than Verizon and the Blackberry. I would have never gotten rid of my iPhone if AT&T wasn't so bad here in NY.

Hey Lisa, I'm curious what you think about the BlackBerry "store". I also have a Storm 2 and I'm happy with it, but damn, the store seems like a half assed effort.
Yeah, the store isn't that great compared to the store on the iPhone. Just one of the ways that the iPhone is superior to the blackberry. But since I need to have a reliable phone, it's not that big of a deal. I mean, I knew going in that the Storm 2 wasn't going to be able to do everything the iPhone does, but that's okay.

Fyi I think this new android phone is unlocked and available for any carriers. Don't see why you couldn't buy it in Canada once its for sale in the States. I usually hate touch typing but this phone is pretty sweet. The only things its lacking are the app store and multitouch.

Yeah. When I first got my phone the service was stellar. Then they had a huge ad blitz for the 3GS and now they don't have enough towers to support the number of iPhone users (at least in NYC). I continually have dropped calls and text messages get sent out or received hours after they are sent (which on more than one occasion made me miss hooking up with friends). But I must admit, I use my iPhone mostly for GPS, games, and music so missed phone calls don't bug me that much.

HTC Hero from Sprint/Nextel? Has multitouch and an app store (marketplace). Go with the android phone. Has completely rocked my world.

Right. I could clarify that the Android app store isn't nearly as extensive as the iPhone app store and multi-touch can be added to the phone but its not native to the OS. At least the Android market is growing rapidly and I'm sure Google will be adding functionalty to their UI as time goes on. I got a G1 last year and am pretty happy with it. Sure, its not as zippy as that Nexus1 and the battery life sucks, but it does have a qwerty (absolutely another reason I don't have an iPhone) and was available through my current carrier.
So weird reading, last year. Doesn't feel like 09 should be last year. At any rate, the HTC Hero does indeed have multi-touch (not all Android phones do). As to the extensiveness of their app store. It's pretty damn deep. I've been going through the sub categories and have barely scratched a dent on what's out there. Mind you, most of it is shit though.

Wants? A video player that will play avi files. I hate converting to MP4.

This was great, thanks!
I've always said that I would never jump ship and leave my current provider for a phone, but this is awfully tempting. I don't know what kind of coverage TMo has in this part of San Diego though. I think I'm going to have to consider the 30 trial period.

Fellow Canadian here, I love Virgin Mobile's service so I went BlackBerry. IPhone is only available through Rogers out here and I won't deal with them. Which provider are you using Brendan?

The iPhone is available, for me anyways, on Telus and Rogers. And apparently Fido. But I get an employee purchase plan through Telus because I work at Best Buy. So the plan I'd get is really good for what I would use. Right now I just have a regular cell phone with Koodo. I'm really leaning towards the iPhone. My manager and supervisor keep telling me to go Blackberry but... I don't know why but I just can't.

Can the iPhone play custom ring tones? Like could I make an mp3 of a song I have on it my ring tone? Or do I still have to download ring tones through the provider?
Buying a blackberry at this point is nearly insane. It's good for one thing, and one thing only: microsoft exchange e-mail services. In literally every other avenue, the Blackberry OS is laughably outdated, and RIM has shown no hint of understanding regarding how bad they have it right now. Apple is going to be releasing iPhone OS 4.0 along with their next generation iPhone in June, and Google's Android keeps improving by leaps and bounds. By contrast, RIM just updated Blackberry from 4.5 to 5.0 and the improvements were: nicer looking menus. Hell, the improved messenger app they released has routinely taken their e-mail service down over the last month. Plus, the web browser is so horrendously bad that it shouldn't even be considered a legitimate option at this point.

There's a website, sorry I don't have it bookmarked at work, but it's a great source for iPhone ringtones. I'm sure a few Google searches will find even more. But no, there are plenty alternatives to custom ringtones without going through the iTunes store.
Also, if you have a mac, you can easily make a ringtone out of any mp3 with Garageband.

So I didn't know that Best Buy Mobile here in Canada had signed an exclusive with Rogers/Fido to sell the iPhone. The contract is ending or has ended and we're supposed to be getting iPhones from Telus and Bell at some point in time. BUT... I couldn't wait. I broke down and bought the Blackberry Bold 9700 today. The Telus rep was in too so I was able to get a good deal on a plan and if you bought the phone you got a $75 Best Buy gift card.
I've actually been looking into getting that same Crackberry Bold 9700 Brendan (well, also the iphone/BB debate), so please share your opinions on it once you've had a few days/weeks to mess around.
Based on my experiences, I would say:
Android is #1 (although you didn't list Android)
iPhone is #2
Blackberry is #3

So, yeah, if your choice is between 2 and 3, I'd say you'll likely be happier with the iPhone, IF the service is ok in your area, you are ok supporting Apple's business model, and if you don't mind a possible drop in actual phone call quality and dropped calls.
