Sammy Terry

I don't know how many people know who Sammy Terry is. For those who don't I'll give a brief description.
He was a guy who dressed up like a ghoul in a cape and had a television program in the 60's - 80's. He would introduce weird horror films similar to what Peter Vincent did in "Fright Night" He had great props like a rubber bat and spider pet who had a name like Billy or something like that.

This is where I discovered horror films as a child. I have fond memories of seeing "Gargoyles" and countless other horror flicks who's names I don't know. I remember in the mid eighties when I was 6 or 7 staying up late on weekends to hear the blood curdling screams and hear his nightmarish laugh as he'd introduce himself to the audience and show us terrifying things we'd never seen nor dreamed of before.

I just wanted to post about this horror show host and see if anyone else even knows what the hell I'm talking about.

Here's a link for more info on Sammy Terry

Absolutely - great stuff. Check out the book "Television Horror Hosts" published by McFarland. I believe he has a chapter all to himself.

Horror hosts in general need a serious come-back. There's a duo in LA, consisting of some voluptuous broad and Butch Patrick (Eddie Munster), who host Macabre Theater on channel 16 - it's pretty awful, but I can't help but watch it.

Amongst my various goals in life, one of them is to be or create a horror host for some town that needs some major ghoulish entertainment.

Yeah, I had mentioned this in the Joe Bob thread. If it wasn't for horror show hosts god knows where I would have focused all of my...interests...hmm best not to think about it
I had Uncle Don's Terror Theatre in Rockford, Ill and Son of Svengoolie from Chicago growing up. Whether it was Universal classics, Hammer flicks, AIP or "Attack of the Killer Shrews" it was the best.

In hellishly hot Phoenix, Arizona we had Edmus Scary. He showed horror flicks on Saturday nights in the 1980s. Edmus started his show off by coming out of a coffin. He had long stringy hair and a maniacal laugh. I watched the show religiously.

Sadly, Edmus molested a young boy (a relative of his I believe) and soon after he began entertaining the boys of cell block D...

Farmer Vincent I just moved to Philly from Phoenix. I lived in Arizona all my life. Remember "The World Beyond" every Saturday morning on KPHO channel 5? Most of the more obscure horror films I saw on Mystery Science Theater 3000.

HELL YES!!!! I believe that is where I first saw the epic known as 'Gargoyles'. KPHO used to have movies on at 9am on weekdays as well and occasionally would do a week of horror themed films. But the Saturday morning 'World Beyond' WAS how I saw horror and scifi in the early 80s (well until I got ONTV at least).

Do you remember Edmus Scary? He had to be on for at least a couple of years before "the incident". I believe he was on KUTP 45.

Nice to meet you Altar, we'll have to swap heatstroke stories someday.

Which kid in AZ didn't watch Wallace and Ladmo and dream of getting a Ladmo bag?

Wallace, Ladmo and Gerald were the biggest celebrities in the state! I believe that show was actually on for 30 years. Sadly, Ladmo was sued by KPHO (I think) when he attempted to market something using the Ladmo name. It turns out his REAL name was property of their station. He died a bitter man.

I'm going off to kill myself now.

SAMMY TERRY!!!! YES!! YES!! YES!! YES!! YES!! YES!! Channel 4 out of Indianapolis!

I grew up just north of Cincinnati. It turned out to be a prime location for horror hosts. Friday night offered Samy Terry. Saturday afternoon had Superhost (channel 43 - Lorraine/Cleveland). Saturday night offered the Cool Ghoul (channel 19 - Cincinnati) and Sunday afternoon offered Dr. Creep (channel 22 - Dayton). I really miss the old horror hosts. It saddens me that my daughter will probably never know the late night weekend pleasures of fighting sleep just so you can see Larry Talbot change into the wolfman for the 700th time. Nor will she experience the joy of coating yourself in OFF! to ward off mosquitos so you can watch a double feature at the drive-in.

Tito, get me some tissue...

Hmm.. I didn't expect that many people to know who Sammy Terry was. I really need to meet him this upcoming fall. He always shows up at various haunted houses and other scary events for Halloween in Indianapolis.

There was this big weird pizza restraunt in Indy that closed down a few years ago. It had a gigantic organ with huge pipes sticking out of it. I remember eating pizza on the floor and some musician would play the organ and bubbles would spray out of the pipes. VERY SCARY AND WEIRD! But Sammy Terry was going to be there at a future date and I remember walking down a dark hallway inside the restruant and seeing a large coffin which was one of Sammy Terry's props. I kept expecting him to leap out of that coffin!!

...Im not sure if Channel 4 even is on the air anymore. I will have to ask my parents who still live in the area.
Actually, it is. I visited their website and they're a WB affiliate now. I sent them an e-mail but I haven't heard anything back yet. They have a video for $19.95 of Sammy Terry highlights that I am VERY seriously considering.

Hope this helps.
