I get why you'd be all world-weary and cynical about this business Spike but that ain't right either. Two other (non-movie based) boards I visit block the shit out of not just trolls but also anyone acting like a dick. They're not at all free of hard-fought arguments and they're not all hippy and lovey dovey either, but they are free of that passive-aggressive, socially-underdeveloped, meaningless, snarky, pubescent bollocks that seems to dog internet discussions that attract the wrong types of nerds. If you've got a bone to pick with someone else's opinion on those couple of sites you step the fuck up and argue it like you have a brain and a pair instead of slinking back to rummage around in the personal insult hole.

I mean, it's not even as though CHUD is overrun by dickish behaviour, it's nowhere near chronic here like it is at plenty of other fanboy-based cesspools on the web. But there is a small group of boards doing it better right now and the level of conversation and the quality of discourse around here will increase if people don't feel like Andrew did, so obviously hesitant to even post an opinion, even though he's clearly a decent guy who likes talking film.

And that place I was yapping about for the well-aimed put-down? CHUD has plenty of that already. Nick and Devin and the other writers often slam like champions, and they do it at least in the spirit of Wilde and Twain, where wit and imagination are prized, in their articles and reviews. If there's bashing to be done by Chewers on the boards then it's well-placed against mediocrity in film and entertainment and the world around us, but it's pointless against fellow posters. No one wins when that happens, least of all the CHUD board. We must stand together against the dicks and the trolls and tell them that they may take our lives, but they'll never take ... our freedom!

I 100% agree with you, Bucho. I'm part of another forum that has a much stricter policy regarding those that are assholes. How something is said, not just what is being said, is taken into consideration when banning. And the forum is better for it.
I haven't been here nearly as long as others but already I've seen a significant number of people mention that they were hesitant to join due to the fear of being attacked. Count Chocula even tried to justify his trolling by citing the level of snark CHUD's known for.

But CHUD is a much bigger community than this other forum I visit and the mods there do have a heavy workload, constantly on the lookout for those that try to disrupt discussions. It must be a nightmare to try to maintain a more civil tone on top of filtering out the more malicious trolls.

Most of you are really fucking boring though.

The amount of people going in thread, saying this and this movie are crap, and leaving it at this, is plenty, so excuse me if poster #4351150, Andrew in this case, did it and provoked my (completely justified) reaction. Look at my other post: explain why you think a movie is like this, and you'll get a far better response than just saying " it's sloppy". Because even more so in the case of Inglorious Basterd, it's everything but a sloppy movie. Elaborating your point a basic decency of engaging in a discussion. not doing so is like what Count Chocula was doing.

If you can't see that there's a difference between how Michael and Greg called him in a smart and cool manner and how you then followed them by calling him like a bully piling on top with a bitchy personal jibe then you're missing something vital. And if you also couldn't see that Andrew wasn't a troll and therefore your reaction was the exact opposite of "completely justified" then you need to work on your judgement.

I mean, if this one case didn't teach you that getting bitchy at someone for not expanding on an opinion has no effect on them then you may even be risking lost cause status. The guy responded positively to the other two posters who were cool about it but dismissed your post out of hand. That's because getting bitchy fails when you aim it at good guys because they dismiss you as a little bitch. Getting bitchy also fails when you aim it at trolls because then you're actually just sucking their cocks without knowing it. Not only that but getting bitchy at idiots fails because they're too stupid to recognize that you're being bitchy and they might even try to hug you.

It's just an impotent trait all round with nothing to recommend it at all (unless you actually are Message Board Oscar Wilde maybe).
