The guy does atmosphere well. No idea if he's capable of doing a good story, though.

Given how middle-of-the-road the original was, there's actually a faint chance this might outdo it, especially if they manage to score it with any subtlety this time around.
Not holding my breath, though.

Be that as it may, I don't see how anyone can add to what's already there. Since the story and scenario is so unengaging, all the merit of the movie came from the somewhat interesting setting & atmosphere. What are they going to do, replace it with a more European gothic feel, or American gothic even? Then we'll end up with 'The Woods'.
To a certain extent, I can see why people want to remake Japanese stuff- that's a case of translating the cultural background of a core story. But a movie like this, or REC? European sensibilities concerning tone & narrative are virtually identical to US, so the main motivation seems to be 'make it so people don't have to read subtitles.' It's a very cynical way of dumbing down yr audience.
