Your personal favorite genre actor/actress...

Well, who is it? It doesn't have to be a genre icon, ie Robert Englund, but who is you over all fave actor/actress that has been associated with the genre?

My pick overall, is Cristopher Lee. Very underated, very unapreciated. The guy is an incredible actor, who really has a great presence about him. Plus, though I haven't seen them all, he has a huge body of work that speaks for it'self.

It's sad that, only now, with the help of Lord of the Rings and Star Wars ep 2, is he now FINALLY getting his due credit.

Allow me to be the first to piss on Lee's fire. Does nothing for me. And this covers his Hammer work to his newer stuff. To me, he's just there.

Now Peter Cushing on the other hand...maybe it's be but I take great joy in watching him smack Lee around in...well just about everything I've seen the two of them in.

Jeff Combs is the God of the current generation. Englund would be good if he ever did anything as memorable as Freddy, which to date he hasn't save for maybe in Killer Tongue.

Same goes for Doug Bradley. I haven't seen him do enough other than Pinhead.

And the first person who mentions The Chin gets The Boomstick...

This one is tough because there are actors who've done unbelievable work on ONE film, but aren't necessarily considered "genre" performers ...

I might be stretching here, but these performers come to mind:

-Asia Argento
-Diana Rigg
-Anthony Perkins
-Joe Spinell

Currently working? Two words:

BRAD DOURIF.

Sure, the Chin and Jeff Combs are sentimental favorites, but they don't scare me. Thrill me, sure. Excite me, definitely. But scare me, no. Brad, on the other hand... eek!

Really a great actor who deserves all the love you can throw his way.

I'm in complete agreement. Dourif KNOWS madness. Doesn't get enough praise IMO.

For "classic" genre actors, I'd go with Pleasence. That glassy stare. That desperation in his voice, trailing off... The incredible sense of dread instilled within the viewer.

And Pleasence was a joy to watch when going crazy, e.g. speaking in tongues while saving the day in Prince of Darkness.

"ABOMINASHION!"

For me, it's Vincent Price hands down. He and Boris Karloff are two of the most under-rated actors EVER. They both could make even the crappiest movies good just by gracing it with their presence.

Doc, funny you should mention Tom Atkins ... I just saw him on Sunday in the HBO prison drama OZ ... He plays an incarcerated racist, who as a small-town mayor, burnt down a church ... His character was EVIL, and he played it to a T ...

Well, my son is named Rowan Christopher... after Rowan Atkinson and Christopher Lee.

I woudl put both Lee and Price at the top of my list. Everyoen has covered so many good ones thoguh, especially Douriff. The Chin, and Combs are given. But no-one has mentioned one of my (and the wifes) ALL time favorites.

Udo Kier!

As for females, well there are a lot of scream queens, but the ladies almsot always get to be victim, or lucky heroine. Not much room for greatness, and not many come to mind that do mostly horror either. But there are a few that have put in some great turns.

Linnea Quigley of course.
Jamie Lee Curtis, though she is FAR from a Genre performer.

I would just like to congratulate Dr. Vitus on his sig quote. Great movie, great line.

Also on the Lon Chaney Jr. props. As many around here know, "The Wolf Man" is what got me into horror movies as a kid, and it's still probably my favorite horror movie, and not just for sentimental reasons. In later films Chaney Jr. was forced into roles he really had no business playing ("Son of Dracula," anyone?) but for the Talbot character he was absolutely flawless. Big, imposing, sad-eyed and sensitive, with just the right edge of barely-controlled rage (and this is even in his human form!)--great stuff. No wonder he got the Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Lenny in "Of Mice and Men." The sad big man was his thing.

Sigourney Weaver.. From Alien to Death and the Maiden to Snow White.. All very different charachters not your typical horror actress but she has definetly contributed to the genre in her own subtle way!!

And god love her for it!

If we're talking about genre actresses, then I'd like to nominate the lovely Jill Schoelen. Her perky innocence livened up many a horror picture... best one is probably The Stepfather, or When a Stranger Calls Back.

Definately have to go with Bruce Campbell, nobody does sarcastic b-movie overacting better.

Thom Matthews and James Karen may come close however (based mainly on their Return of the Living Dead series appearances).

Vincent Price would be my first choice. Period. Extremely versatile in both his horror and non-horror work. The man was a class act regardless of the role he took. From "Tower of London" to "Edward Scissorhands" it was obvious the man was a professional who, thankfully, enjoyed making horror films and was not ashamed of it(hello? Liam Neeson anyone?). I will personally miss seeing new stuff from him.

Someone mentioned Brad Douriff earlier. The more I think about it, I can see why he was someones choice. He shows a lot of the same versatility that Price did, only to a lesser extent. I liked his role in The X Files ep "Beyond the Sea" and the Tales from the Crypt ep "People Who Live in Brass Hearses." Yeah. He's pretty creepy.

I'll have to say Christopher Lee which I have to admit other than The Wicker Man, which was a great performance, I hadn't seen anything else of his until The Lord of the Rings which he did a phenominal job portraying Sauruman. Count Duuku (sp?) is a great role as well and since then I've seen a couple more which have also been very good. I'm just going to go out on a limb and say he's probably good in every movie he's done.

I've been a real fan of Christopher Lee since childhood, but I kinda changed my mind. I had the chance (or was it?) to meet him in a festival and he's definitely not the Robert Englund type!!
It was hell to get an autograph or a picture taken with him (after a week of lobbying I luckily got both; maybe I shouldn't complain after all??)
He never wanted to speak to any fan and doesn't even want to be approached. I wonder why he bothers going to festivals. He's SO disappointing.

And the Robert Englund type is?

I've had two situations with Englund where he was very dissapointing. I got to meet Englund when I was around 7, and he was a prick. Didn't even want to be at the signing, and if my dad hadn't cut me and my brother in line, we wouldn't have met him. The next time was at the Fango con, and that's a whole other story.

Anyways, kudos to those who mentioned Chris Lee. The guy is a class A actor.

Nicole Kidman

hands down, she's incredibly beautiful and incredibly talented.

Not really a hater, just kinda, eh. The Others and To Die For were only okay and she was only okay in them, I thought. I just don't get the hype about her.

As for fave genre actors, I really don't have any. However, I wonder what happened to the actor Joe Turkel who put in that splendidly understated and eerie performance as the ghostly bartender Lloyd in The Shining. He also popped up in Blade Runner, and seemed to have a style and temperament suited to your more thoughtful, genuinely effective horror films.

Man, I'm really deeply sorry for you if he disappointed you. But he usually is the archetype for the nice guy..

I have to add that, if I profoundly dislike Chris Lee as a person, I still find him impressive as an actor. The thing is, he was a childhood hero and when I finally got around to seeing him, he made a terrible impression.

If I saw you at a convention I'd wanna talk to you every night and take lots of pictures too!

I think the biggest star coming to the upcoming Chicago convention is Kevin McCarthy. I'd like to meet a Sam Raimi or Bruce Campbell or someone like that!

Only OK? My god man! Aside from the hype and the awards and all that I think she's an incredible actress. Eyes Wide Shut was a great performance and Moulin Rouge as well, although I hate musicals! The Others was her best performance to date, imo. She was on screen for possibly 90% of the film and just had me glued to the screen the whole time.

That's exactly how I felt about Englund. Here' a guy I literally grew up watching, and then to meet him and see how he is....just damn disapointing.

I love Lee, Cushing and Price, but Christopher Lee is the hands down winner for me. I have a fondness for the people who put on the makeup and play the monsters, and Lee was the best at that....no contest.

I would add Amy Steele to the list (Friday the 13th Part 2, April Fools Day) but she has virtually disappeared. Not much of a resume, but she had that certain something that me likey.

I actually found Steele to be my fave leading lady in the F13 franchise, mainly because of the scene where she pisses herself. No, not for fetish reasons, but she actually seemed really scared, and I thought the pissing really showed a human side of fear, that a lot of horror films try to aviod. To me, she came off as more scared than most other leading ladies in the F13 "saga".

I wonder what ever happened to her as well?

well bruce campbell has always been a favorite...i can't think of a bad thing he has done as far as his performance...and as for a female ellen burstyn (sp?) her performances in requiem for a dream and the exorcist were amazing...although i haven't seem too much of her other work...
