Old book series, new writer

Just a quick question:

Has there ever been an instance where a new writer has taken over writing an established book series and it became better than ever?

My friends and I can't think of a single example.

Some of the John Gardner Bond books are kind of fun.

Icebreaker in particular. That was as far as I got though, my library wasn't able to find the rest of them even through interlibrary loan.

It may be a little early to tell, but Sanderson seems to have picked up Jordan's WOT series with little effort.

Speaking of Jordan, his Conan novels weren't half bad. They were what had me interested in Wheel of Time in the first place when it came out.

Caleb Carr's "The Italian Secretary" was a noble addition to the Holmes canon.

I have that (and his first 2 novels) autographed from Carr. Good pick! He hasn't done another Holmes novel, has he Mattioli?

Not that I know of. And, honestly, if he's working on anything, it had better be another "Alienist" novel told from another character's perspective... maybe Cyrus.

Don Winslow's Trevanian novel will be very very good.

Is Robert B. Parker's Marlowe stuff any good?
No. he does Spenser, not Marlowe. And it goes worse in the second book.

Right, but he also wrote a couple of Marlowe novels.

What Subotai meant was that they were Marlowe in name, but were more like Spenser than anything. He even ends up with one of the Sternwood girls as his Susan.

Mind you, I like early Robert B. Parker, Early Autumn and Looking for Rachel Wallace are masterpieces of P.I. fiction.

OH. Okay.

The Road of Kings by Karl Edward Wagner is probably the best Conan story not written by REH.
