Virtual Reality

What happened here? In the 90's, this was the next big thing and now....nothing. Out of all the nascent technologies of the 90's, the fact that VR is not around any more is kind of strange to me. With the graphics technology where it is today and lcd prices through the floor, I'm amazed someone hasn't reintroduced the still pretty cool technology to a new generation. Again, what happened? Seems like it would be a big hit these days.

Extended use gave people really bad motion sickness.

I figured 20 years ago that we'd have some flying car action now too, it just wasn't meant to be. VR will come, it's just a matter of time(and when porn studios can afford to use the tech, probably). Tech has just gone a different route, moving on to 3D and such.

I'm not familiar with what was made, but what billylove said is probably true as well.

It's not a completely dead art, though. This guy did some AMAZING shit with a Wiimote and a Wii sensor bar.

VR research keeps on going, but the hype of the 90s pretty much put consumer grade VR on the back burner for quite a while.

I kind of blame in part VRML, there were a bunch of people trying to make the web be a virtual reality environment, and every site that was VRML enabled (anybody remember those?) was 100x more difficult and annoying to use than their 2D counterparts. I think people were expecting movie like VR environments until they figured out the practical reality that real world literal metaphors are not the most efficient ways to interact with computers.

The "It's a Unix system" moment in Jurassic Park is a perfect example of this.
