Survivor 20: Heroes vs. Villains

Really great video of Jeff assessing each player.

HEROES
Rupert Boneham (Pearl Islands, All-Stars)
James Clement (China, Fans vs. Favorites)
Colby Donaldson (Australian Outback, All-Stars)
Cirie Fields (Panama, Fans vs. Favorites)
Amanda Kimmel (China, Fans vs. Favorites)
Jessica "Sugar" Kiper (Gabon)
Stephenie LaGrossa (Palau, Guatemala)
JT Thomas (Tocantins)
Tom Westman (Palau)
Candice Woodcock (Cook Islands)

VILLAINS

Tyson Apostol (Tocantins)
Randy Bailey (Gabon)
Sandra Diaz (Pearl Islands)
Danielle DiLorenzo (Panama)
Russell Hantz (Samoa)
Jerri Manthey (Australian Outback)
Boston Rob Mariano (Marquesas, All-Stars)
Parvati Shallow (Cook Islands, Fans vs. Favorites)
Benjamin "Coach" Wade (Tocantins)
Courtney Yates (China)

I am LOVING this cast though admittedly they are more great "personalities" than great players. The only person I have no idea who they are (even after watching the video) is Danielle. She was clearly cast because of her boobs. Apparently Richard Hatch wanted in but is still on home confinement for his failure to pay taxes on his winnings. It would have been great to see him dangle his penis in everyone's faces again.

I predict that Russell makes it to Final Three based solely on the fact that no one has seen his season, but he has seen all of theirs.

I also predict that if Russell doesn't take the top prize, it goes to a female Hero. There are too many big egos out there and I think those folks will knock each other out early. Previous winners will also be targeted. So after the smoke has cleared, I'm betting that someone who keeps their head down and mouth shut sneaks in for the win.

So excited!!!!
I, too, am excited. I think even more than I was last time for All Stars.

Also: I really, really hope Russell takes the title this year.
I remember Pearl Islands and Sandra was soooooo not a villain.

Are you kidding me? The show picked up on her shenanigans late in the game, but once they realized she had a shot for the mil they featured her more. She hid in bushes spying on people, she snuck into the opposite tribes camp and dumped out their food supply, she talked smack about everyone in the confessionals... She was great and I hope she goes far this season.
Yeah, I loved Sandra. Probably my favorite female winner.

Based on Russell's crybaby eyes at the Samoa reunion, I don't think he's goes very far. I wouldn't be surprised if he's ousted before the merge. "The devil you don't know" factor.

I'm personally excited by all the bikini eye candy like Sugar, Amanda, Parvarti and Candace. Bring it!
This is going to be a blast.

In the plus column, Robo Tom is coming back, as is Amanda who remains my number one Survivor crush. And who can't get a little excited for the Russell-Coach show?

In the negative column, god damn it, more Boston Rob? Hasn't he made enough money on the reality show circuit?
Maybe Boston Rob will actually live up to his hype and, you know, actually win. Talk about an overrated player.

Sandra was actually one of the most fully developed "characters" on the show. Most of time you either have a straight up hero, villain or whatever waste of space and/or sheep like Amber. With her she wasn't "evil," she just had multiple layers (like all of us in real life). Highs, lows, etc. Some times she was in the majority rule and living fat and happy. Then she'd have the carpet pulled from under her and fought back. I actually think she's one of the best players of all-time (just a peg or so under the ultimate Survivor player Brian Heidik).

I've seen on some rumor sites that he makes the final three.

I love Probst saying Coach has no shot to win, but will go far because he's such a non-threat. I'm pretty certain that doesn't jibe with what's going on in Coach's head.

No Johnny Fairplay?

I always hoped Yule would be back. Unfortunately, there's really no way to improve on his perfect game play last time.

Apparently CBS is throwing some huge 10th anniversary party for Survivor and only inviting previous players. Specifically, anyone who ever appeared on the show got an invite. A good chunk of them are said to be going.

I see what you are saying, but a number of these people aren't really "heroes" or "villains". I mean, Probst is calling Candance jumping tribes as heroic. WTF? Just more eye candy casting. The show has a gimmick and within that framework, Sandra fits better on the Villain side than Hero.

Fairplay was given a opportunity that most people would die for (to compete twice) and intentionally pissed on it. Probst will never let him back again.

That's what is so great about Coach. He's absolutely delusional.

My friend Bobby is going and I'm going to do my damndest to get him to bring me as his "date". It's a pipe dream, buts its mine, okay?!
What I'm surprised they didn't do was have two seasons in a row dedicated to this theme. One season full of past "villains" (and thus seeing them scheme against one another) and another for past "heroes" (so some of the high and mighty assholes will be proven to be hypocrites - Tina and Colby immediately come to mind!)

Whatever you do get a picture with Big Tom and Rudy. AKA my all-time favorite Survivor "characters"

Along similar lines, I would love to see a Season of ONLY Survivor winners to see who really is the best among the best.

Tim Dalton at EW commented that this cast is lacking Survivor contestants from the earlier seasons. They only have 3 people who were from Seasons 1 - 6 and there are three contestants from Season 18. Hardly a representative group of the past 19 seasons, though admittedly I love who they chose. I kinda wish Jenna M. was playing. I would love to see how she has "grown as a person," which she is fond of saying. But her boyfriend (husband) Ethan is battling cancer so she'd probably just use the same excuses to be an entitled, lazy bitch that she did during her initial run.

Good to see I'm not the only one who hated Jenna M

Well, after this season, they'll have 20 winners, assuming no one repeats. The 21st season could easily be a winners season.

May I add my name to the list?

I do feel terrible about her current situation. Ethan was one of the best winners.

If they did it, it wouldn't be next season. All-Stars was Season 8 and Fans vs. Favorites was Season 16. If they keep the pattern, it could possibly be Season 22 (8 yr gap -> 4 yr gap -> 2 yr gap).

Yeah, I heard that he gives instructions for the challenges really fast and then gets upset if you didn't hear him or ask questions. And as an outdoor enthusiast, he really hates people who complain about the conditions. I gotta say, although he does get to go home each night and sleep in a bed and take showers, he stands out in the elements, rain or shine, along with the Survivors during rewards, challenges, and Tribal Council.

I always wondered how much they edit out of all those challenge briefings. Must be a lot of "So, wait, do we cut the purple cord first and then get the puzzle pieces?"

Yup. Some of the challenges are super complicated. I'm surprised we don't see more people running in the wrong direction or getting lost in the woods somewhere.

Also Stephen's take on the new season.

Probst at the Vanuatu Reunion Show was 100% Grade-A dickhead. He was constantly going after Chris (the winner) for lying to everyone (That's a bad thing on Survivor?) and kept using Julie as an example of someone he screwed over.

He kept making it appear that Julie hadn't lied to anyone. The part he left out was she had actually fucked Chris over first at the merge. Not a word was uttered about this. What makes it all the more worse? Probst was dating Julie at the time. So he went out of his way to make the winner look bad on live TV just because he mind-fucked his then girlfriend.

Honestly, a lot of them look like they're filmed at a completely different time than when the contestants are there.

I'm not sure this is representative of Jeff's actions. He was dating Julie at the time. I'm sure his judgment was clouded by emotion.

I am one who doesn't see Sandra in the villain camp. Yeah she spied and threw out the fish but she was doing it against class a shit-heels like Johnny Fairplay and Burton so that actually makes her a hero in my book.

It was her attitude while doing it that makes her a real villain.
I have no problem with the attitude as long as she's fucking over the right people. Those shit-birds deserved what they got. Even Fairplay knew it that's why he voted for her at final tribal.

I wish I hadn't been spoiled on this (I know the winner, and the respective placement of three or so choice players-thanks Diva!), but knowing it does have the advantage of assuring me that there's more than a little good in how things shake out, and that some great characters last a good while.

Despite posting that link, I haven't actually looked at it so don't spoil it for me!

As for Sandra, its all about Survivor "morals". People who were placed on the Heroes team didn't do anything shady. Whether or not the people Sandra acted out on deserved it, her actions were not above the board. She snuck around, she lied, she let someone else take the fall for dumping out the bucket of fish, among other things. People who claim to play the game with "honesty and integrity" would not be caught dead doing what she's done.

I don't recall her ever playing the "integrity" card. Her big motto at Final Tribal was "Anyone But Me."
How exactly is Danielle a villain, by the way? I mean, she'd fit right in on a "Wallflowers" tribe, or a "Boring" tribe, but villains? All I remember her doing was shitting her trunks and getting crushed by lame-o Aras.

Right, that's why she belongs on the Villains tribe. My point was that by Heroes standards, she doesn't make the cut. MMM was saying she should be a Hero because she only did shady things against evil people.

I find it hard to believe the winner is already out there. Doesn't the jury sign some NDA agreement?

CBS isn't as high strung about spoilers/secrecy like they used to be. They used to not let the players interact with one another outside their season until after the winner is revealed. Nowadays, they don't care. The biggest example of this was Amber & Rob from All-Stars. They had actually been dating before that season started filming (and everyone knew it) and continued doing so even after filming wrapped.
Oh. I still find it a bit hard to believe we know everyone's vote. Or the majority of them.
I've been following the Survivor scene since Africa and spoilers get out. This entire season has already been leaked. Last time I remember that happening was...Palau and that was one Helluva boring season even without the spoilers.
I loved Palua. Great balance of likeable folks and irritating shitheels. Hot Goth chick in tiny panties. The day Tom killed a fucking shark. The decimation of the Ulong tribe. Dramatic 12 hour-long final challenge that resulted in one contestant manipulating the other into outright quitting. Palua is great.

It's like I said about Thailand. From a strategic angle, it's fascinating to see one player dominant from Day 1 to Night 39...the first time that happens. But then you had repeats of that with Palau and Cook Islands.

Since we're discussing favorite seasons, Dalton Ross ranks all 19 seasons.

Borneo will always be my #1. I'll have to think about the others, but Marquesas and Pearl Islands would have to be up there.

That season was so boooooring.
Guatemala and Vanuatu better than Thailand? Bullshit. For my money, Maequesas is Survivor's finest season. The Outcasts ratings-gimmick still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Even though it directly resulted in Pearl Islands being easily the most insane year. To be fair, Ross is right to point out the overrated-ness of Outback.
Ugh. I didn't lilke Marquesas at all. Really unlikeable Final Four. Same with Thailand.

Guatemala is way underrated. The great locale mixed with Danni's masterful, digging-herself-out-of-a-hole win make it a solid season for me.

I have no idea who Danni is, which shows how memorable that season was for me.

ETA: The pics are starting to go up on Facebook. Fairplay still takes top prize for the Douchebag Awards.

Mugging for the camera with Chet.

Ruining a nice group shot with his banana hammock.

Hah, Chet. The worst.

I didn't love Marquesas. The twist was cool, but aside from Kathy and Pascal, I didn't really like the cast much. And who the hell is Vecepia?

I'm inclined towards Tocantins, though as DR says, that may just be for Coach. Sometimes a dominant personality can do that. Russell, Hatch, and Tom. Pearl Islands had two in Fairplay and Zach Galifinakis.

Marquesas was the first season that I was really obsessed with. I had watched the previous seasons, but Marquesas was the first that I really knew everyone's names and invested in who I was rooting to win. I even had purple tribe buff and was thisclose to going to the finale (long story short, my ex-good friend sold me out and gave the second ticket that we procured together to another person). Plus, this was the first season where contestants weren't given any supplies. So they had to do everything on their own from teh get-go. It also had the "purple rock" controversy that forever altered how people would play the game, as contestants did not want to go home due to chance. SO instead of forcing a tie, people would switch alliances, which I think has increased the enjoyability factor of Survivor immensely.

In any case, I came here to post that Jenn Lyon (Palau) has passed away due to cancer. Coby Archa (Palau), her bestie, posted this note on Facebook. Apparently, the messages in Avatar helped Jenn have peace with her cancer:

Jenn Lyon is my best friend. I can't say I am her's because she has a long line of people who love her and want to call her their own. She is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen on the inside and out. We met playing a silly game called Survivor where she was misunderstood by me because of her beautiful looks and sweet passive attitude. Something her mother told me had happend to Jenn her whole life, people judging her pretty shell. Funny how looks can be a curse.

I asked Jenn what she would like to do before she...
we never said die, Jenn is too stong to even speak in those terms. This is a person who has faught cancer face to face for almost 5years, die isn't in her arsenal. Her answer wasn't fly to the moon, or meet Madonna, it was simple and clear...
"I want us all to go to the mountains with snow all around, everyone can stay in their own seperate little cabins. We can come out and have snowball fights and spend Christmas there together." That was it.

I was there when we shaved each others heads at her first chemo treatment. I was there when she she found out the cancer had come back in her bones on my birthday when she was visiting me in Texas. We had just gotten tattoo's together on our inner arms, hers to cover where her port was inserted. I was there when she was in the hospital last year and I had 'Victoria' from Twilight give her a suprise visit. She was there for me when I moved to LA and she loaned me the money to do it. She caroled me at Christmas and I always tried to make her laugh. She always accepted me for who I am and I always tried to learn from her. I was lucky to be there a lot.

Has anyone seen Avatar? It was one of the last things Jenn and I did together. The movie looks light and cheesy - eye candy for the masses. But what we didn't know was the theme of the Na'vi people. That nothing dies. We are all energy flowing into the Earth and we are all connected. That tree roots hold the memories of the people passed, that animals can feel their ridders, that people travel through a tunnel of light when passing by while being chanted on by their tribe. As I sat next to Jenn, knowing that she had just had news of only having a short time left, I wondered how she would handle it. All this death and beauty headed at her face in all its amazing technicolor 3D glory! I looked over at her worried but she had a sirine smile on her face. From then on we talked about it everytime we saw each other. How that simple movie could make her feel..safe. We always signed our texts, " I see you". That line was spoken from Neytiri as she held the little, white, human crippled form of Jake in her big blue strong arms. It was the last thing I said to Jenn as I wrote it on a note I left on her pillow. " I see you."

Her beautiful shell was still a curse in the end. I often thought when we went to the doctors that poeple didn't take her illness or pain as serious because she was still so pretty. But it was just her Avatar. I write this not only for myself in some sort of therapy but for what Jenn believes in. In writing about this I am connecting our story to the branches. I am feeling the Earth. I am rallying the tribe to chant as Jenn passes her energy into the light.

We love Jenn!!!

I see us all in the perect snow, with our own cabins, having the biggest snowball fight. Survivors, big blue Na'vi and Jenn running in the snow with her 2 dogs jumping about her. Everybody put on your 3D glasses because this is about to blow your mind.
