Really? Your favorite movie is FIREPROOF?

"I am out to prove that 80% of my friends will repost, I hope I am right!!!!! Let's lift up His name and make a statement! Sadly, 97% of facebook users will not repost this! When Jesus died on the cross he was thinking of you! If you are one of the few 3%, repost this message....thank you and GOD bless you all....."

That's the quote that led me to the Facebook page of someone I (apparently) knew in high school. I tend to accept requests from everyone and then delete them at a later date, this post caught my eye before the inevitable deletion. It then led me to peruse the "Info" section of this person's profile, where I discovered that her favorite movie is FIREPROOF. I probably shouldn't have been suprised given the above quote but I was staggered that FIREPROOF could ever be someone's favorite movie. It's one of the most inept filmmaking displays of recent years. Couldn't her favorite movie at least be THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST? Can you imagine having a "what's your favorite movie" conversation with someone whose answer is FIREPROOF? Where would you go from there?

Is she hot?

Not be unkind, but no.

Good, then you have no reason to make any concessions.

Well it was never really about that, I was more amazed that someone's mind could be warped enough by their faith to believe that FIREPROOF is a good movie. For instance, I love cheeseburgers but I wouldn't list GOODBURGER as my favorite movie.

There are Christian denominations that aren't "allowed" to watch anything secular. Maybe Fireproof is the best of what they are "permitted" to watch?

That is indeed a disturbing proposition.

That made me laugh for quite a while.

Well, in all fairness, a lot of people just don't know how to properly watch a movie. They're not gonna be deft enough to recognize things like script, direction or cinematography and they're not in tune enough to pick up on subtleties, subtext and intricacy. And by nature, we really respond to the films to which we're able to connect emotionally, so if you fit into the mold above, then it only makes sense that something like FIREPROOF is what you connect to. Doesn't make you a bad person, just makes you a touch lacking in depth.

Maybe he doesn't like movies, but likes God and monogamy and stuff. Much like the Los Angeles Galaxy is my favorite American soccer team, but only because I've never heard of any other ones.

If you've ever beaten the fuck out of a computer that movie will strike close to home for you, I get the favoriteness.

Yup, probably this more than anything. When I last went home to visit family (around the time Fireproof hit DVD, so I'm assuming that was also around the time of its tiny theatrical release) there were big fucking billboards for FIREPROOF, DVD stands of it in gas stations, etc. The Southern Baptist Church must have done quite a bit of shilling to get this thing out there.

I had to clean out my chief's office the other day because she was on maternity leave, but noticed that she had the soundtrack to this movie in one of her drawers. I didn't say anything because nothing popped up in my head, but a one of the officers in my office did walk by, took a good gander at it and asked me: "Why do people like crappy movies?"

I just shrugged, and put the Fireproof soundtrack in her box of other crap. It's really nothing to get worked up about.

Live and let live I suppose. I hope she dies in a fire.

As much as I think she's a really good and fair minded boss--that kind of irony doesn't come around too often.

Make it so, Mr. Nunziata.

Yeah, to be fair saying that it's nothing to get worked up about is kinda overlooking just how condescendingly awful stuff like this is.

That's fascinating. Secularly produced or just secularly themed? FIREPROOF's a completely in-house deal but that can't be the norm. Could you watch BEN-HUR or THE TEN COMMANDMENTS or something like that?

I clicked through everything hoping that there was some nugget of useful information and that my misanthropy and inherent cynicism when it comes to such things was ill-deserved, but no. Even the .pdfs and the links that appeared to be decent appeals to charity all ended up saying "Buy copies of our shitmovie and give it to people like it's a highly incurable sexually transmitted disease."

could tell them to watch Brother Son, Sister Moon, but it got some nudity in it. So these people would not watch it.

I would have been overjoyed if this girl had been singing the praises of Howie Long and William Forsythe!

Although, now that you mention it, I do have those ubiquitous Chevy commercials to hold against Howie Long.

He did those intolerable Radio Shack commercials as well.
