I'm getting a familiar vibe off of Taxi Driver from a single post.  It's a classic though, starting off with a fairly reasonable, high concept idea about genre movie trends, and gradually becoming more and more bilious until two paragraphs later he's straining not to foam at the mouth while still adequately expressing his disgust for a forgettable comedy sequel.  He managed to get through 2/3 of a standard CTM meltdown in one post where no one is even arguing with him.  It's like he knows we've gotten quick to spot him, so he's started just having his rage-stroke on spec before anyone responds.

I cannot profess to being an identifier of CTM's, but Taxi Driver's Star Trek post does the same. A reasonable start to mild insanity as we wrap to a conclusion, 2700 words later.

 

Sure enough, an IP lookup reveals that he's CTM. You guys are getting too good at this!

Spotting this prick has become the new "Graboid".

I've been getting the same vibe too, in other posts of his. Christ, at this point it's like a 'Where's Wally' picture with only Wally in it.

I don't pay attention as much as you guys might, but I could tell from his Star Trek post that Taxi Driver was all kinds of unstable.  Plus, there wasn't an original thought in the whole post itself.  I'll definitely keep an eye out for this jerk, especially after reading about what happened to Kate.  I noticed she wasn't around but didn't know this was the cause.

People like that sort of amaze me. Also hey he picked "Taxi Driver" as his nom de shitposte this time because why even bother hiding the fact that you're unhinged

Can someone explain what happened with him and Kate? I mean, I've had Kate on ignore since forever, but she certainly didn't deserve any abuse from this raging asshole.

Kate received some creepy threatening pms from somebody, presumably CTM.  Then she left.  It would be disingenuous of me to act like losing her was a devastating blow to the community, but shit was well out of line.

I think over the course of an afternoon, the guy was following her every thread & lambasted with hostile insults after every one of her posts. It was pretty nuts. The mods didn't ban him quickly enough so she bailed, lamenting how the boards weren't what they used to be.

Those two posts are pretty good indications of why Kate left. I'm pretty sure Tax Master/Crack Pipe were both confirmed aliases for CreepyThinMan/BurninHell/Taxi Driver/Jesus Nipples or whatever his inane screenname du jour  is.

 

She was definitely not one of my favorite posters but she did deserve much better than to be run off by some lame internet tough guy who thinks he's blowing our minds and telling us like it is by writing profanity-laced, long-winded tirades about how Men in Black 2 was the worst movie ever, EVER.

He threatened her via PM and suggested she commit suicide on the Forums. And he literally created new logins just to continue stalking her. That goes way beyond whatever one wants to think of as "the line" in Internet chatrooms.

I'm not trying to white-knight here, but a lot of the more antagonistic boarders essentially set the stage for that to happen to her, provided that the whole "Kate" thing isn't a gimmick (and it wasn't from what I gather, but I could be wrong).

 

I understand that she sometimes had low-content posts, said some dumb things on occasion, etc., but in no shape or form does anyone deserve that sort of treatment. It's terrifying and it's downright horrible, especially coming from someone like CTM. If everyone got terrorized by some lunatic with a chip on his shoulder who takes the internet too seriously for shitposting, half of you would probably be trying to figure out how to delete your online presence since the beginning of your time on the interwebs.

 

You don't have to play nice, but it's nice if you do. You don't have to mourn the end of the era of Kate.

 

But when I look at the very real possibility that Kate was an actual human being with feelings and sort of a vaguely lonely existence with some very real and potentially socially crippling personal problems who turned to the internet because it was the only place where she felt like she could be herself, it's just quietly tragic. So if you're one of the assholes who was like "WAAAHOOOO THE BITCH IS OFF MY BOARDS LET'S ALL DRINK SOME WINE COOLERS AND GET HANDSY, BROS", you're almost as much of part of the problem as CTM was.

 

If she was a gimmick, I will happily eat my words with a nice Beaujolais and some fresh steamed swiss chard. Because in that case, at least I'll be content with the fact that some deeply disturbed internet fuckface didn't threaten/harass some poor, slightly annoying, yet well-meaning and ultimately harmless young woman on the internet to the point that she felt like she couldn't have her one safe haven where she could express her opinions and only get attacked by a few dicks who couldn't drop their feeble nerdrage long enough to just ignore the problem.

AND she had greatly improved lately anyway, from what I saw. Posts still ran long and sometimes off topic but she actually made cogent, well-expressed points way more often than the haters gave her credit for.

I did lament her absence briefly last night when Steve Jobs was In Memoriamized

 

I must have missed the party when she left.  But in any case, the last part strikes me as a huge stretch.  There's a big gulf between disliking someone's web presence and stalking/threatening them, and to say otherwise trivializes how fucked up the shit CTM pulled was.

 

Don't get me wrong, I think Kate is real and so are her problems.  But this is an entertainment message board, not a therapy group.  I'm glad if it was able to help her in some way, but I don't view it as a mark against anyone's character if they don't large portions of the board (and in her prime, she required a loooooooooot of real estate) to be devoted to working through one person's issues.

Fair enough, and I'm not trying to trivialize what CTM does, but it's hard for me to look at all the backlash and not draw a connection between all of the kerfuffle about her and him jumping on the bandwagon and taking it to way more disturbing levels.

 

 

So you don't think when a member of a community is run out by threats, it's a blow to said community? 

I think I expressed my view fairly clearly in that post, if you don't cut off the end.

 

There was a thread recently about how to conduct yourself when someone you dislike dies.  This is a smaller-scale version of that issue.  I think the way she left was ugly and terrible and I've been cheerfully leading the CTM lynch mobs since then, but I'm not going to pretend I found her to be an asset to the community before it happened.  Or that people who were annoyed by her are as bad as the guy who actually did the awful thing.

 

Anyway, this thread is for reporting and mocking trolls, not chronicling my callous indifference to my fellow man.

That's a tough one. Do I think CTM felt entitled by the sometimes extreme reactions to PK on this board? Yes, but it's like the argument that watching American Psycho causes some nut to commit mayhem. A lunatic is a lunatic.

Amateur Psych Theory: CTM clearly wants to be accepted as a member of the CHUD community. This is based on the rather simple idea that people often hate the things in others that they hate in themselves ( or what they see as 'potential them'). In which case he might view his running Kate off as a way of being accepted by the community. People have made it pretty damn clear they don't want her on CHUD. Maybe he was expecting to be the conquering hero when he was successful.

I guess my point is in a community that accepts and encourages some pretty fucking weird personalities y'all were pretty nasty to Kate and by being that nasty you (unintentionally) encouraged CTM to do what he did.

That's an interesting post coming from someone who pretty much only shows up to harass GabeT.

It's a real shame that Kate left. Somewhere, far beyond the deep web across the aether, there's a French movie messageboard that's losing members in droves. Ah non !

CTM is one of the reasons I don't bother with the AICN talkbacks anymore (I'm assuming it's the same guy - it's too much of a coincidence not to be). I'm glad that he can be IP-banned here, which they don't seem to be able to do over there.

 

I liked Kate and think it would be a shame if she didn't return. I didn't always agree with her views but I always found her interesting, none-the-less.

Kate was often misinformed and/or late to the party, but she never, ever, lashed back or called anyone names. And that's the core requirement of internet civility, if you ask me.

I may be mistaken (I assumed that's why he was gloating about stealing Wi-Fi before they banned him again).

Sorry I started this, it was an offhand comment, and in no way meant to suggest that I or anyone else condoned CTM's behavior toward Kate, would rather have CTM around instead of Kate in some sort of hypothetical desert island scenario, or have any desire to deny Kate her participation medal for learning to be generally civil on the internet. 

It's absolutely fascinating that even with Princess Kate gone we're all still derailing threads to discuss her.

She's a controversial figure & everybody has an opinion about her tenure here. The derail will be over once everyone has said their piece, I'm sure.
