I didn't even realize this was out. I'm a big fan of the book and was wondering if any chewers have seen it this weekend. I'm hoping we'll get a review from Devin.

Not a review, but some positive words from Devin:

I had a pass from Chud, but some last minute work travel got in the way.

It's not on a ton of screens around here. I'd like to see it, but I'm not sure when I will.

If this is a post release thread, could someone please tell me whether or not the film goes into the whole cross-dressing plot? I don't think I can make myself watch this even though I've read the book and the sequel.

Yea, he ends up cross dressing at the end of the film. It was a good flick, and obviously Cera was relishing playing the Francois identify. The only real problem I had with it was that the love interest is just very unlikable, and never does anything at all to have us sympathize with her. She was such a bitch i was thrilled to know her psycho religious parents were putting her on lock down.

So... SPOILERS:

Very very briefly and not very convincingly. He uses it as a way to sneak into Sheeni's house for the...climax of the film.

I thought the movie was okay. Francois was great. Definitely Cera's best performance to date. It definitely felt a bit rushed, being that this was a 500 something page book and a 90 minute movie. Sheeni didn't really feel as desirable as she does in the book. No Wally, Fuzzy, Apruva, Dwayne or his mom. Bernice is in, but Nick instead has her drug Sheeni to fall asleep in class and gets her kicked out much easier than it was in the book. Vijay pretty much disappears, and never turns evil. And in the end he goes to jail rather than escaping to France (I'm reading Youth and Revolting right now, so not sure if he eventually gets arrested here, but it's certainly far far different than the book). Though it is true, had Nick turned himself in his punishment would have been far less trouble than what he goes through in the books. Besides Francois' parts, Nick had some funny moments himself. When he and Vijay arrive at the boarding to school to find people refusing to speak English to them it's pretty funny. Also his face offs with Trent are good.

I liked it quite a bit. I haven't read the book, but now I want to as apparently a bunch was left out.

Cera's comic timing is really stellar, and the movie largely benefits from it, especially when he plays Francois. Half of the laughs came from hearing him deliver lines like "Sink your filthy dick in this tomato" and such.

Whether Sheeni is likeable or not, Portia Doubleday is very, very aesthetically pleasing.

I laughed a lot.

I agree that Sheeni is unlikable, but I think the unlikable parts help explain why she gets involved with Nick in the first place. She is just using him for the most part until she begins to be won over by Francois.

Fun forgettable flick.

Did anyone else find the animation sequences as obnoxiously hipstery as I did?

Yeah, they were an unnecessary distraction and overly precious.

It was ok. Just ok. More amusing than truly hilarious. The story was pretty flimsy to begin with, and there's only so much ammunition you can have going for Cera's typical antics of deprecation.

I say rental at best.

It's nothing special, but going with real low expectations did this movie a whole lot of favors for me. The crowd was dead silent for awhile, but it seemed like they warmed up to it towards the end. The bit where Nick tries to fake his death got the biggest laugh.

I had no idea how good of a cast this movie had, and dug each appearance from everyone save for Zach Galifianakis. Which is on me because it nagged me that Danny McBride would have killed that part in his sleep.

Did anyone else think Trent was a George Glass type person that Seemi made up just so she could feel less awkward around Nick? It surprised me that he was a flesh and blood person.

My favorite throwaway moment was when Nick called Trent's sweater "adorable" as an insult, but had that slant of sweetness that Cera knows how to deliever.

Initially they did, but the animated sex positions slayed me. That sequence seemed like something Savage Steve Holland would do if he had a more raunchy mind.

Dug it, pretty good. I certainly was looking forward to seeing Cera in Scott Pilgrim, but even moreso now.

The book is worth checking out? Sounds like there's a much bigger world to check out, at least.

I must be a little in the minority but I loved it. I thought it was just fantastic. I loved the strange off beat humour to it. It was just quite different to the usual comedy, and it was also flat out hilarious. I can't remember the last time I laughed so much. And the cast was awesome. Ray Liotas small turn was awesome. Justing Long, the guy Cera takes the beemer from, and the Indian kid were all excellent. Anyway I can't recommend the film enough, watch it.

Just finished watching this. Absolutely detested the trailers. But I actually really enjoyed how loose the actual film was. The trailer made it seem like Cera's dark personality was the main drive of the story and I incorrectly assumed it would lead to a conclusion that such stories usually lead to. But it was simply one element in a movie that had a few more things going on.

It was amusing, but my expectations were a little higher. Cera was funny as both Francois and Nick, but sometimes he felt a little muted as Nick.

A fun supporting cast, though. I did especially enjoy Justin Long punching Steve Buscemi in the face. Also, I thought the sex position animations worked well, but the sequence in the middle was distracting.

Awful, somehow captures none of the humor of the book.

Wow, I completely forgot this movie existed.

Not bad. I liked the look of the film (and Cera as Dillinger was pretty great) but it felt like a story where huge swaths were cut out. The themes feel bigger than the conventions of any one rom-com can handle, as if they are from a completely different movie.

This film is very loosey-goosey in terms of the writing (both plot and character) but Cera and the rest of the cast are a lot of fun.

Cera as Francois is fun as a change of scenery, but Cera as Nick is even better. Sure it's the goober he's played before 17 times but I've come right back around to that goober just fine. Dude's a champ at goobing.

I love how at the end Sheeni says, "You're 16, you're only going to a juvey and you'll be out in 3 months." The whole film I'd been shitting myself for Nick because I figured he'd be doing 12-15 in big boy jail.
