Went into his latest, the Cannes winner Un Prophète, without much in the way of expectations, and I was very impressed - it's basically a straight up traditional gangster flick, some little artsy touches to be fair but I think genre movies fans will leave more than satisfied. There's some social critique in there, to do with the alienation and identity loss of arabs living in France, but no preachyness to be seen, and much in the way of visceral thrills. No masterpiece, but a throughouly engaging movie, and I love the poster as well:
