America: Doomed?

This is a really good article that looks at the history of political doomsaying in America and tries to see past it to figure out if there's any actual validity to the cries of "the system is broken". One of the most interesting points is the fact that America's seemingly been on the brink of disaster over and over again, and yet it keeps dodging the bullet somehow.

Whether or not it has dodged bullets or taken them to the kneecaps, gut, and groin over the centuries really depends on the group with which you identify. Unless you're a rich WASP from a long line of rich WASPs, your group has probably been screwed over at least a few times in American history.

Nations rarely go down. Sure, there are things like the fall of the soviet union, nazi germany or yugoslavia, but thats the exception.

So, the USA as a nation isnt going anywhere, and isnt doomed. However, I think claims such as this are more intended to say the "idea" of America, the America of right now, is going to go away.
Which is utterly right, as America has always been a nation of change and evolution, into pretty much any direction.

In my opinion and limited experience, people "doomsay" in times of uncertainty (obviously), but also a lot in times of a strong polarization of public discourse and society. The more pronounced a so-called rift in a populace becomes, the more people panic.

And if you mean the "American Dream", that one died out long ago. Some just never noticed

What once made America is gone. When the banks won during the Wilson Administration, it was only a matter of time. It took them almost 90 years, but they did it.
