American Idol 2010: Season Whatever - Page 2

Andrew Garcia needs to get his act together. Do. Not. Want. Another. Goki.
If some of the ladies don't jump out and grab me tonight, I'm done with this season. What a charisma vacuum.

I really like the dude in theory. The judges pointing out that he's still riding on "Straight Up" hits a little too close to home, though. Last night's performance from him was just boring.

Nervous kid could be good too if he gets a handle on his jitters and doesn't rely on tween songs his core voters like.

On a different note, was that the first guitar solo from an Idol contestant? I can't remember David Cook or anyone else doing an actual axe *solo*, however brief. It was refreshing.

Girls are way better. Or at least, three or four of the girls are, and that's enough. Early guess is Siobahn takes it all.

And that's the 4,000th post. So proud.
My DVR stopped recording about an hour in for some reason.

I'm not all that upset about this.
The girls are lightyears better then the boys. It was a bit tough picking what girls should go home, where half of the boys could leave.

my early pick is Lilly, Crystal is very good too.
Last night was the first ep I've caught all season. I'm digging the hippie and indie chicks, the latter a little bit more. Siobahn - or whatever her name is - gets a pass for hitting that high note, but the rest of her vocal was so-so. Though she's got personality, and personality goes a long way. And what's up with the 17-yr old going on 40? She took a fun, poppy song ("Put the record on") and turned it into adult contemporary. Snooze. I haven't seen the guys yet, but based on these comments I'm not missing much.

Ugh. Gokey was awful. I could not understand his popularity. I always chalked it up to his dead wife pity points. I wanted his friend to get in over him.
Katie Stevens should do a Jojo song next week, or early Christina Aguilera. She needs to her shit figured out quick.
The American Idol contestant pool just got a whole lot whiter tonight.
They got rid of the right ones though. Now Lacey, Tim, Todrick need to go and they will have the best of the crap.
Yeah, getting rid of 3 black people in one night does look kind of bad, but they did all suck.
Todrick will last a while, and also have his best night yet next week. Also, I bet the girl with anime hair lasts longer than anticipated.

Bowersox, Garcia, DeWise (?), and Katelyn look like the four with a chance to win it. Poor-man's Paquin and Russian figure skater could be the sleepers.
I think Kara is morphing into Paula V2.0.

I like Crystal most out of all the contestants. She's the most professional and steady in her performances.

Okay, so that was more like it last night. Most of the girls actually showed some of that promise to justify the early hype. Siobahn and Crystal are in another league. One of those two will win this thing. Katelyn is gorgeous and a great singer with a chance to make it to the finals. But she just put it on cruise last night while I fell asleep in the passenger seat. Albino with the Feather Earring gets praised a lot by the judges, but I'm not really buying it. Too much quirk. On the flip side, the judges are harsh with Didi, who I think is one of the better artists on the show this year. She sounds contemporary.

Lilly finally sang something in tune, but it won't be enough to save her. Unless voters turn on Katie, who's got a huge voice and no idea what to do with it. She's like a teenager on a bullet bike. It's just a little too much raw power for her to handle right now. Paige is toast. One of the worst performances I've ever seen at this stage of the show. Her vibrato was so weird I though she was singing while sitting on a washing machine during the spin cycle. Maybe she should have been. That way at least one person would have enjoyed her performance.

I agree with most of this analysis. This was the best night by far since the semifinals started. Siobhan and Crystal just seem to be miles ahead of everyone else performance-wise, and are really the only two I look forward to hearing week after week. I would like to see Crystal show a little more emotion/personality after her critiques though - at times it looks like she couldn't be bothered to care, and I know she does (she whitened her teeth between Hollywood Week and now so she's listening to someone on the production staff).

Paige was awful last night, which is a shame. She sounded nervous and intimidated, and seemed to know that she gave her worst performance of the season. If I were a betting man I'd put everything I own on her going home. Katelyn bored the hell out of me. Despite her talent, I think her so misjudging the importance of putting in a memorable performance might cost her a spot in the finals. Lacey and Lilly have more unique voices and Katelyn might have opened the door for them to sneak through another week.

I think Katie's in a bad spot. She's got a great big voice and can certainly use it, but her taste in music doesn't jive with what the judges want her to be. Her tastes seem to be a little more mature for someone her age, while the judges are intent on shoehorning her into the typical teen mold. That's a shame. I'd rather hear her sing Michael Buble and Corinne Bailey Rae than Miley Cyrus or Ashlee Simpson. And I agree that Didi gets a lot more criticism than is warranted.
I really liked Didi's "Rhiannon" last night. It sounded like something you'd hear on an indie movie soundtrack...which can go either way, I suppose. But it rung pretty true with me.

Simon was off base with his criticism of Siobhan. She was right in the sweet spot the whole time, and I'm wondering if it's one of those songs that he'll watch back and have a different opinion on. It would be interesting to see how things sound differently in the studio as compared to tv.
I hate all the guys. I'm hoping it's a reverse of last year when the final 5 was 4 guys.

Please let Todrick go. Last guy wasn't all that. The judges are so pumping these guys up to make it competitive but they are worthless.
Completely missed the girls last night. For some reason my DVR just refuses to tape this show. I just caught the tail end of tonight's show. I can't believe the judges were raving over them. I will give the last guy credit because even though he wasn't hitting the notes as well as he could have, you could tell he really felt the song. I wasn't nearly moved to tears like Kara, but I dug his performance better the previous few guys.
Crystal Bowersox was really good last night, Diva. She's Simon's favourite as well.

Try YouTube for her performance last night.
I agree with Simon. This is Crystal's to lose. She's great.
Siobhan is another girl who's a nice contrast to Crystal. She's a got a great voice and has more quirky personality. With more surprising song choices.

I guess Crystal is the more professional singer. Simon and the Judges spoke on this last week. Crystal doesn't get worried or scared about performing. She knows who she is (Janis Joplin Indie Artist) and she can competently sing her genre of songs with weekly success.

In a way, that gives her a more "mechanical" colder feel from Siobhan. Which doesn't detract from her quality as a performer. She's real good.

Ha, the guys suck so much

It's good to see Big Mike actually take on meatier songs. Like Diva said, you can tell he really felt that song and it showed in his performance. Until last week, he was doing light, Jason Mrazy-type songs that left him kind of breathless instead of bigger, soulful songs like he's done the last two weeks. Before, it was like watching a 7'2" 300 pound center pull up for 3-pointers or shoot fade-aways when he needed to be muscling guys in the paint and trying to rip down the backboard (Sorry, it's March Madness time.). I never thought he would be the strongest guy going into the Top 12.

Garcia is crashing hard. He and Bowersox are similar in a lot of ways. The two big differences are that Bowersox knows who she is and makes it look effortless. After phoning it in last week, Garcia tried too hard to replicate what he did in Hollywood. It didn't work. He'll be safe this week, but not for too long.

Am I the only one who notices that Lee DeWyze misses as many notes as he hits? Between "Fireflies" and "Lips of an Angel", I think DeWyze found my list of songs that annoy me and is on a personal quest to get me to change the channel. If survives (no guarantee) and comes out with something by Creed next week, I'm done with this show.

Casey has a decent voice, but a complete lack of stage presence. He has that nervous "Wow!-I-can't-believe-I'm-on-tv!" smile plastered on his face every time he performs. Russian figure skater has a great tone to his voice, but like Casey, has no stage presence. He's got more of a "Please-God-don't-let-me-piss-my-pants-live-in-front-of-25-million-people!" look. But both should be safe.

Despite the fact that TodDdrick(?)(!) sucks, I kind of like the guy. He has the weakest voice by far, but he gets some credit for being the only guy really taking any risks. I'm sure he's toast, though.

Tim Urban did a serviceable job on Hallelujah. He's pretty terrible overall, but his cuteness should get him through. For reasons I can't quite pinpoint, Aaron creeps me out. He wasn't too terrible (grading on a generous Season 9 Guys curve), but I am doing my best to will him home.

I think we see a shocker this week with an early front-runner like DeWyze or Garcia packing it in along with the obvious elimination of Todd-Rick(?)(!). But I'm hoping it's Tim Urban Osmond and Aaron the Beardless Gnome.

I agree completely with everything here except for the observation about Todrick. I actually think he has a good voice, and is a natural performer, BUT he's shooting himself in the foot with these overworked arrangements. He needs to just take a simple song and sing the hell out of it - no, I take that back, just sing it well - instead of substituting theatrics (that damn Broadway background) for vocals.

I was afraid for Big Mike when he decided to take on Maxwell, but he pulled it off. Cojones. Big cojones. And WTF Kara?! Tears? Maybe if Maxwell himself sang it, maybe... WTF.

Garcia is really grating on me now. Tim Urban did a solid job this week which is unfortunate because he's not very good and needs to go home before knocking another decent, more deserving performer home. I'm fully expecting Idol/America to piss me off with their choices for the top 12, but as long as Crystal, Mike, Siobhan, and Didi are still around I'll be cool.
WTF? The wrong Girls got sent home tonight.
I can't complain about Katelyn being gone, she blew her opportunity with a song choice that can only be described as clueless. She opened the door for Lacey and Katie to sneak in. Paige should have been gone, there's no two ways about that shit. And I'm glad that Lilly called America out on its voting criteria because I don't know what the fuck America wants either. "Oh oh, I'm going to vote for Paige because those judges were just so mean to her." And then the next week they're asking why this girl who can't sing is still on the show.

I could make an argument that Todrick should still be there, but again he was clueless as to why his performances weren't working. Despite his talent, I couldn't stand to hear him butcher another arrangement. The other guy should have gone, and Aaron needs to count his blessings and thank all those teen girls who put him through and will ensure that he stays way longer than is deserved. Every season's got to have one.

I wonder if Vote for the Worst is behind this.

I would hope not, but since the guy and girl they lobbied for both made the cut they just might have had an impact on the voting. I imagine early on, when there are more contestants and the gaps between vote totals are smaller, that they could certainly influence who stays and goes. On the other hand, the criticism from the judges is so erratic that voters who try to go on the "expert opinion" might be confused as to why certain singers should stay or go. I wish it was a mix of viewer votes and judges opinions, say let the judges determine the bottom 2-3 and the audience vote out their least favorite.

The judges have been all over the place this season. Make the song your own. Don't change the song so much. You're too young to sing that song. Sing something more mature. These contestants are being pulled every which way, and it's showing in the performances.

Yeah. I think the only piece of decent advice they've given all season is the "be true to the kind of artist you are" schtick...which doesn't help much if you're one of the contestants who is struggling with just that, and you're listening to their other schizophrenic suggestions.

Some of the kids are really mining their comments for their next song, and then getting conflicting comments the next week.

Alex going home isn't a shock. The kid had some serious potential. I guess voters didn't want to wait around to see if he will realize it over the next few weeks. So, off he skates. And To-Drick(?)(!), can't say you didn't earn the trip home. At least you tried harder than anyone else to make it interesting. You'll be missed. By someone, I'm sure. Probably.

I'm convinced it's catty girls and gay men doing all the voting at this stage. No one's voting for the attractive women. Okay, Janell and Ashley weren't great and had no chance in hell at winning this thing. And sure, it was an off performance for Katelyn this week. But Katelyn was one of the best singers they had. She was one of the favorites, not to mention being the hottest girl left. What kind of a world are we living in where being a hot girl can't buy you an extra million votes or so on American Idol? I'm not sure I want to live in that world. As for Lilly, I found her to be a little too quirky for my tastes, but you can't deny her talent. She was rightfully pissed that she got the axe while inevitable fodder like Lacey and Paige are left breathing. At least now she can go back to the family business.

Don't you think Lily didn't get the vote because she reminded people of the Pit of Despair? I'm pretty sure that was the main thing. It's the same reason Crystal won't win despite being way better than everyone.
So far Didi is my favorite of the bunch. I love her tone. I like Crystal as well, but her shtick might end up being a bit limited (although she does it very, very well).

Call me crazy, but Siobhan is down around the bottom for me. Not all the way there, but I'm not crazy about her voice.

Dudes? Christ, do they suck. Little high-school pipsqueak really, really needs to fucking go. As does Creed-fan #1 (Lee). His choice of music sucks horrible amounts of dirty ass, and his fucking face reminds me of Tim Tebow, which makes me want to break things. Christ.

I really think Katie and Paige deserved to go home this week.

I think Didi may well end up being versatile enough to coast through the finals. While I love Crystal, I think you're spot on about her being limited - though that may not be the best term. Maybe more like set in her style. Also, Crystal doesn't show enough emotion, and somehow I suspect that her voters will turn on her for not showing enough "gratitude" for their support. Crazy and unfortunate, but possible. Sometimes you gotta pander to get ahead.

I can't understand why the judges are sucking Lee's jock the way they are. Nothing about him tells me that he can sell an album. I could understand if they thought he was a teen idol, but c'mon. Your Tebow comment made my day though.
Glad my Tebow observation didn't go unappreciated.

Yeah, "limited" isn't that great, because it implies that Crystal wants to do something else. She's comfortable and very, very good at what she does.

When I say "limited," that's just me trying to get into the mindset of this show, which truth be told, I find to be fucking retarded. I mean, I love music and appreciate good artistry. I just get peeved when the judges give all this contradictory/ludicrous feedback.

Like, god forbid anyone ever perform a song with a darker tint to it. "Eh, it was too dark, dog. I want to see you really get out there and perform." Fuck you, Randy/Kara/whoever. Sometimes there's a place for that kind of music. Why can't the show just be about doing what you do and doing it well?

ETA: I really liked Garcia at first, but man, that guy's fading fast. If he pulls another so-so "hey, Imma take a female pop song and put a funky, acoustic twist on it!" next week, I'd say that's it for him. Or at least, it should be.

In a real world sense, you're absolutely right, but the judges, esp Simon, are really good at seeing the kind of things that will work in the context of pop music and the voting audience. A darker song will irritate a large portion of the voting block and the pop music buying crowd. Lee, for ejemplo, is ideally positioned for the target demographic, which is why they dig him so much. If he makes it maybe four more weeks, that guy gets an album.

Shit, Paige and Katie made it. Terrible.

I hope they do a real Billy Joel night. Or fuck, Tom Waits night.

Jesus, do we really need more Rod Stewart-ized songs that once belonged to Tom Waits?

"I'm doing Downtown Train."
"No, I'M doing Downtown Train."

What we need is Waits coaching them. And they can slaughter the songs, for all of me.

Speaking of which, Stones this week. Good for Siobhan and Garcia, I think. If Garcia can't nail a Stones song, get the fuck out.

Exactly. And song choice should not be the problem this week. If you can't choose a good - no, great - Stones song then you deserve to go home. But, inevitably when they have a week such as this, someone is clueless, digs deep into the catalogue, and pulls out some piece of crap B-side that bores the audience to death. I think Lacey and Katie are the likeliest to do this.
And God help the soul who sings Paint it Black as the judges will be more than happy to tell them it was too dark.

I'm sure Siobhan will choose a dark Stones song, sing the Hell out of it, and the proceed to be called weird by Simon and too dark.

I suspect Simon will be a little harsh on her, no matter how well she sings. He wants Crystal to win and Siobhan is her nearest competitor.
I'm actually wondering how Crystal will respond to being on that stage in front of a larger live audience and with 30 million viewers watching. Something tells me she won't be that comfortable. At least in the semis the set up was a lot more "intimate," but now they've got the really big display, the full band, the lights, the celebs in the audience, the bad soda and car "commercials" done by the contestants, and guest singers. It's a circus and I'm not sure if her style will translate well to that atmosphere. I hope I'm wrong. And Tim Urban...it was nice knowing you.

God, I hope Siobhan does Paint It Black so the judges can criticize her for going too "dark." It'll only make them look more ridiculous when their favorite, Lee Dewyze, decides to show off his "serious" side by doing something way too dour and they inexplicably praise him for it.
