Whoa, great tattoo there.

and since all of them end up dead by the first scene of Carpenter's film, some of that seems shattered.
I'm betting this won't be the case. Female lead and R.J. MaCready clone will escape somehow. I'm trying to remain optimistic about this.

Yeah I was thinking that they were going to try something to mess with the fans. Really hope they don't pull a cheap twist at the end.

I guess the first guy to comment didn't get the joke.

They'll find a little saucer like the one Blair was building and instead of blowing it up they'll use it to escape.

Wut? Look at the dates.

Swedes? They're Norwegians, Mac.

Finding an alien aircraft and being able to figure how to fly it while suffering from paranoia, exhaustion, and existential fear would be the ultimate crappy twist ending, wouldn't it? Plus, the thing Blair built was obviously too small to carry Blair, it was definitely built for the use of the Thing in its original form.

It was a joke. But ya never know.

That is the proper response- thank you.

It would be funny to see them fly away in a little saucer, only to set up a sequel. Then we'll have to all go to that Unnecessary Film thread and debate it again.
The little saucer will be set on autopilot and will fly the couple to the Thing's homeworld where they will have to do battle with THE THINGS in the third film.

Too funny (in response to Iggy). Love the tat Alex. Never been tempted to have a "movie" tat but that looks sweet.

Movies are re-written all the time. I'd expect that after casting some changes will have been made (including adding a predictable and horrible twist).

Thanks! Funny enough- I'm not a big guy for movie tats myself, but I was at a point in my life where I didn't know who to trust and (still believe) that you will never completely know who someone is, so it fit well. That's why I went with the original story title there. Someday I'll get another to butt against it- something that show how much you need others to survive.

TVS (Thing Vs. Swedes, course)
TVN. They're still Norwegians, mac.

An American lead? And here I was hoping that Hollywood would finally make a film with an all Swedish cast.
If they don't incorperate the little nugget from that sequel-script, (egg versus frying-pan), I shall be GREATLY disappointed.
HEY SWEDEN!

I figured they wouldn't go the the Norwegian team and do the ol' "They're speaking a different language but the audience hears it as English" trick.

Strike Entertainment's output has been pretty high quality in my book (Dawn of the Dead '04, The Rundown, Children of Men, and Slither) and there is also the fact that this director will be doing the Zack Snyder-written/produced Army of the Dead as his follow-up to this. Both are positive aspects in my book.

An American female lead? That's fine by me, considering the rest of the cast will supposedly be made up of European actors.

Knowing the ending ahead of time? I don't have a problem with it. That said, do we really know? I've read plenty of rumors that while most of the film takes place before Carpenter's.....some of it may take place during or after JC's take. I imagine that means some of the characters get away from camp and are chasing another iteration of the Thing or battling it elsewhere. Will we see what became of Mac & Childs? Who knows. Whatever route they go, I wouldn't be surprised if they leave it open for a third entry that takes place after both films.

Still though, my biggest sticking point with this prequel is what direction are the creature effects going in? Practical with some CGI enhancement (yes please!)? Or full on CGI (I hope not!)?
I hadn't considered the possibility of a criss-crossing timeline. Say a couple of characters escape in a snowcat, what would be the travel time between bases? Probably enough time for the events of Carpenter's film to have played out before they arrive.
You could very well be right. And if they came upon the burnt-out American camp with two survivors left, what would they do? Take a chance in rescuing Mac & Childs? Or waste 'em?

Well apparently now they're mostly from all over the place.

It's funny, you'd think a Norwegian Antarctic base would be full of people from Norway. Who knew?

Fuck this film with bigfoots dick.
I know I've suggested the crisscrossing timeline in another thread. That's about the only way to make the film not dramatically inert. (Although never underestimate the ignorance of teenagers to the classics.)

Two THINGS. Helicopter goes one way. Snowcat another. And we follow the snowcat into unknown territory while the helicopter goes into Carpenter's film.

Can't see how Acts I and II won't be a retread of Hawks/Nyby and Carpenter though.
Twin, I really like that idea of intersecting timelines. Even if it's kept vague, as to not upset those that have no idea what a Blairmonster is.

I do feel like this will have about the same box office impact that the original did.

The Thing is constantly jockeying for position as my favorite movie.

Oddly, I kind of look forward to what they do with this. Sure, it will probably be filled with too much CGI (and after the first one, anything other than newfangled matte paintings is too much, really), and any action will probably be shot in closeup and edited with with a chainsaw.

If anything, maybe it means I'll finally get somebody in Indianapolis to show a print of the original, since I was a wee lad obsessed with a Reese Peece eating alien when this came out.

The planet A'majig.

I didn't read the article completely due to spoilers, but amazingly, this thread has me looking forward to the flick (albeit very cautiously). Needs Bottin in a big way though.

But make no mistake, I will attend a screening equipped with dynamite in case it turns ugly before credits roll.
I remember reading Carpenter's idea on how to bring back an aged Russell/David back for a sequel. Have them suffering from frostbite. We need a sequel to that version not a prequel. Doesn't mean I won't still watch this one. I'm really curious.

I do really like the idea of a language barrier being used to create a greater sense of isolation for the main character.

That would be very effective, especially if the Norwegian wasn't subtitled.

Now what's gonna be the official title for this? Last time they called it "The Thing from another World" it bombed, and they'll probably avoid calling it part 2. Wallstreet 2 hides the fact that it's a sequel to an old flick and even Live Free or Die Hard avoided the 4.

Also, if this is a direct sequel to Carpenters movie, it would be quite confusing to give it the exact same name. Same for Burtons Alice in Wonderland II, which mind numbingly is titled just Alice in Wonderland.

"The Thing: Synchronised"
Synchronise this: I don't think you can anally rape the thing if it didn't want you to, as it could just close off that orifice. Perhaps giving it teeth like Norris' chest. Not a pleasant thought.

But here IS a pleasant thought: given the Thing's ability to alter every part of its being to suit its purposes, if it DID let you anally rape it, you probably COULD get it pregnant.

"Another Thing"
As far as I know, it is just being called The Thing.

I'm hoping the cycle of Thing films follows the Invasion of the Body Snatchers remakes like it has so far. Both the original Body Snatchers and The Thing From Another World are '50s sci-fi/horror gems. Carpenter's The Thing and the '70s remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers are flat-out classics. I just hope this Thing prequel turns out as well as Abel Ferrara's Body Snatchers. I'm not expecting a classic, just a really solid redo that does something a little different with the material.

That said, if a fourth Thing film is ever made I hope it doesn't end up as bland as 2007's The Invasion.
