Let-down Movie Night!

Ok, with all the talk of the Letdown second portion of Jeepers Creepers (to most, not all) I got to thinking. What other movies were let-downs like this? I don't mean Dungeons & Dragons or Battlefield:Earth style let-downs that suck from the get go... but ones that really have you liking the movie. The ones that get you going, and have your hopes high, only to be dashed into the cruel jagged rocks of sucky reality a scant hour later.

well, here si a short list of mine. Each brilliant and tragic in it's own way. Gather these up for a weekend of tension and ... well... no real release.

1) Jeepers Creepers

Ok, it has all been said. But the really agonizing part about this film is that the first portion really was that good. It was amazing. I felt like I was a kid again watching a classic 70's style horror film. Amazing build up here.

2) Resident Evil

Alright, the sequence that opens this film, with the system lock-down, it one of the msot gripping segments I have seen in a long long time. This was so well done with the pacing, the visuals and especially the music. Seeing what happens and progresses actually had my breathing up a bit. What a complete non-gory let-down this turned out to be in the end though.

3) Ghost Ship/House on Haunted Hill

Ok, i love both of these movies, but what let-downs their final antagonists turned out to be. The visuals in House were nothing short of spectacular. Taking the definition of thrill rides to a whole new level. And the intro to Ghost Ship just has to be seen in all it's glory to be believed.

Now these two didn't end as horribly as some of the others on this list, it is just that they were very anti-climactic. In thsi world of happy shiny ending, soemone needs to realize that this doesn't mean the big bad-guy needs to be an impotent joke.

4) Shocker

You will never watch the X-Files the same way again. Mitch Pelegi is an AMAZING serial killer in this flick. great soundtack and soem real tension as he is being aprehended. They even take a break for some finger foods. But right in the middle this turns into techno-thriller... and falls flat on its face. What a Shock!

5) Brainscan

Alright, who remembers this little gem? The video game sequences are supremely cool. They want you to think he is being drawn in, and when viewed on a theatre screen, YOU feel like you are being drawn in. Great use of first person perspective. But when the rock and roll jester appears we all just kind of wonder where in the hell it all went wrong.

6) Hannibal

Ok, this one was very odd. I had read the book first so I thoguht I was going to be disappointed. In the book...

(#@SPOILERS@#) Clarice and Hannibal run off as lovers, jet setting around the globe... yuck.

How uncharacteristic. Well, with Gary Oldman you can't go wrong. And the gore early on is very well done. But then... well, they ended it even WORSE than the book. How is that possible?

Well, thats a good list for now. What do the rest of you think?

I realize that I am venturing into sacred territory, however, there are 2 films that immediately come to mind for me:

THE EVIL DEAD - It had me with the card game, but after that, the overdone hokey gore and awful grey wigs killed it for me ...

and

JAWS - ok, I am not saying that it's not a bonafide classic or anything, and I realize the era in which it was made ( which is actually a plus in my book ) but big rubber sharks should be kept in the water ... The acting was great, as was just about everything else ... In fact, the scene in which the guy is killed in the bay ( the sinking leg ) is VERY disturbing, as is the kid on the raft ... I guess it would have been more effective for me had I not seen the shark out of the water, esp bobbing on the boat at the end ...

No, it's a gread thread idea, my friend! I've just been having trouble thinking of any let-downs (which is a first for me, I dunno what's wrong).

Minority Report (or pretty much any Spielberg film) - Ending sucked, ruined the whole experience for me, Spielberg just hates leaving an audience feeling anything but hopeful.

Clean, Shaven - A gritty, tense flick with so much potential completely derails by the end. Still worth watching once, though.

Bourne Identity - I enjoyed this, and am a fan of the Doug Liman's work, but the ending was just another "feel-good" cop-out.

Opera - My least favorite of the Dario Argento movies I've seen gets even worse when he ends it with some of the cheesiest, most over-the-top silliness I've seen in a long, long time.

Blade Runner (theatrical version) - Not the director's cut, which is brilliant, but the original version with the so-called "happy" ending. Just as the studios did to Terry Gilliam's Brazil, they felt it necessary to try to force a happy ending onto the end of this bleak sci-fi. Ugh.

Panic Room - I still haven't forgiven Fincher for this mess of a movie, and the ending just added insult to injury. Why, Dave, why?!!

Rashomon - A brilliant film by a brilliant artist, but did he really need to have that baby scene at the very end? Why can't we be left to decide how to feel? It's great either way, but I'd prefer it without the seemingly tacked-on ending.

Titanic - Why didn't the entire cast and crew of this film sink along with the ship? Now that I'd be willing to sit through 3 hours of cheese for...

I'm sure I'll be back with more soon, so don't lose hope i3ullseye!

Just a couple..
Signs-
If the first 1/2 to 2/3 werent so good, the cheezy ending may not have been so dissapointing.

Suspiria-
What?? Its over???

Both i felt were still good movies, as i own them both on dvd, just thought the endings could have been better.

Well I was intended to keep it mostly horror, since it is one of the hardest genres to successfully pull off. If we open it up completely to ANY film, wel...

I could be here for DAYS just on AI alone. Brillaint Kubrick turned to wishy washy bad aliens.... and even they were the SAME models from Star Wars EP II..... yuck....

Bride of Re-Animator.

I expected the same level of quality as the first film and Bride didn't come together for me. The direction wasn't nearly as inspired as it's predecessor. Yuzna does not equal Gordon. I'm still hoping for a better sequel with Beyond but I'm being a bit more realistic.
