Family Plans and Smartphones

I'm guessing that I'm SOL, but figured I might as well ask. What do you folks with two smartphones in the family do for your plan? Do you just suck it up and pay for two individual plans, with voice and data, do you try and work the family plan option and share minutes and pay for individual data or do you have some other trick? I've done a ton of reading and I can't find anyway around $150+ cell phone bill. I just can't justify that. Even Verizon and ATT announcements about lower price unlimited voice plans doesn't really help much. We just don't use that many minutes.

With 4 people Sprint gives us unlimited mobile to mobile service with all other bits (text, internet, navigation, insurance) for around 170 a month. I think something similar would run around 120 for 2 phones. They've got some decent phones as well.

We have three smartphones on Sprint, and we do the family plan. Three lines, 1500 minutes, unlimited data and texting for $129 per month. This doesn't include the extra money we pay for insurance and the family locator service.

We use less than 300 minutes between us per month. Unfortunately for the family plans, Sprint starts at 1500 minutes.

I think what you should do is to find out if any of the providers will give you a corporate discount, and then go from there. The military discount we get with Sprint pretty much covers our third line and all of our taxes and fees, so it's well worth it. 15% off of the total bill.

We do get a corporate discount with Verizon. We've been with them for w few years and are out of contract. I was going to give their retention folks a call, see if we could get a couple of Eris for free and whatever service discount we could swing and then apply the discount. I don't know if they can get the price down low enough to make it doable. Never hurts to try I suppose.

It always pays to ask. I went to one Verizon store and was about to get screwed. I went to a second Verizon store, and they gave me a great deal. Be polite, go to a bigger store if you can, and be flexible. It worked for me.

I pretty much always go the polite route. I realize that most of the folks in these stores are just doing their jobs and don't have much pull when it comes to corporate policy. These phones are definitely a "want" and not a "need" so I can be patient.

Yeah, the old saying is true - you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. To be fair, the guy in the first store was being an inflexible jerk with me, so I immediately went into bitch mode, and it just escalated from there. The second store was bigger, which helped, but I started with "Sweet as pie" mode and didn't budge from there. As a result, they couldn't have been nicer to me.
