Saw it on Sunday too. Crazy fucking thing. THe aunt dancing with the skeleton and the piano eating one of the girls were the highlights. Though to be fair, i understood half of the movie.

Wikipedia says "House was never shown in the United States until the distribution rights were bought were bought by Janus Films to be released as part of their Eclipse line of DVDs." Dunno about the veracity of that, but you seeing it on IFC is about a million miles away from Sam Raimi somehow seeing this in Michigan between 1977 and 1981.

I finally got to watch this a few weeks ago, and I loved every batshit insane minute of it. Seriously, this movie is just awesome. The bit when the aunt ducks into the refrigerator just sort of blew my mind, and that's when it really became something special for me.

I've been telling people that this film feels like what would happen if Suspiria and Evil Dead II had a wild night on the town in which they got drunk on sake, went home and had crazy dirty sex, and then nine months later found out that they were the proud parents of an insane Japanese baby. I think that pretty much sums it up.

My Criterion Bluray copy finally showed up in the mail today; blind bought this just off the overwhelmingly positive word of mouth around here so hopefully it will live up to the hype, or I'm coming after all of you.

This film transcends hype. Maybe even transcends normal positive or negative reactions. I can't imagine anyone watching it and feeling like "eh, it was okay." It's too insane.

I blind bought Hausu on Criterion Blu-ray from Barnes And Noble.com based on all this hype, and it's already shipped. I'm very confident that it will live up to the insanity that it's got going on.

Pretty much all of the above. I have a 6 year old daughter and much of this plays out like one of her made up stories (sans the gore & nudity).

I also got a Miike vibe as well. Happiness of the Katakuris popped into my head (tonally) while I watched it.

Got a great deal on this through B&N Criterion sale. Weird as shit. And I still can't believe it was a 70s flick. Whatever film stock they used must have been the Asian standard for a couple decades following.

It's an interesting time capsue for sure. Not the weirdest/scariest film I've seen, but in this case, context and history is key.

So how did this, Suspiria and Eraserhead all manage to come out in the same year? Was there something in the water in 1977?

So, I finally saw this and... wow. I am just as flummoxed as everyone else as to this movie even existing, AND it was released by a major film studio at that. I've never been on substances like shrooms or LSD but I'll presume that experience isn't far off from what I experienced while watching this movie on Hulu Plus, which I signed up for free for a month with a student e-mail address.

While I wish I could have seen it with an audience, on my computer screen had to do. I am glad I saw it but I don't know if I would watch it again, as seeing it a second time would likely not be the same.

However, I do have to mention that even I was surprised at how strange it was the entire time, from the music to all the odd editing and cinematographic stuff they pulled out, to the animation to the homages to silent films and the like... I had seen some clips from YouTube before but even that wasn't enough to prepare me for this one of a kind experience.

Although there were certain aspects of this film I liked, I didn't like it as a whole unfortunately. Just too...out there...for my tastes (and that's saying something)

Finally saw this thanks to TCM airing it over the weekend...My God, that was wonderful! I'm ordering the Criterion Blu as soon as I have the funds, as I've no doubt the transfer is incredible. I read a description of the film as "Suspiria meets an episode of the Monkees", but that barely begins the quality batshit insanity on display.

Just watched this as well, thanks to TCM Underground. This may be the most manic movie I have ever seen. I really, really enjoyed watching it.

If you took Hausu and mixed it together with Equinox, I'm pretty sure you would end up with the Evil Dead.
