CHUD LIST: 15 Mainstream Films from 2010 to be Excited About

Yay new lists!

I find it weird that while I'm looking forward to this film none of the actors have really grabbed my attention in any of the trailers...except Hugo Weaving. Glad to see him among the highlights.

The transformation stuff in the trailers looks pretty good and since I'm guessing all of that is CGI I'm hopeful that I won't spend the entire film going "That could've been done practically. That could've been done practically" over and over again.

EDIT: I guess in the worst case scenario Shutter Island comes out the week after Wolfman so one way or another we'll get our horror needs fulfilled in February. Maybe The Crazies will be decent too.
Yeah, weird that you'd be looking forward to "effects heavy".
I'm just going on blind faith with The Wolfman. I haven't been knocked out by the trailers (looks decent), actors rarely sell me on films (no matter how great Del Toro is), Rick Baker's time has come and gone (they seem to be leaning toward the CGI), and the buzz has been pretty terrible but for some unknown reason I think it's going to be good. I couldn't even defend that expectation to myself let alone anyone else so there is a really good chance I'll be seeing this as a party of one.
That's like wishing for film noir or French Impressionism to come back, isn't it? It was a place in time. Certainly not gonna relaunch on Wolfman's wobbly haunches.
Excellent list idea! Would it be possible to get a potential release date for these films? I'd love to get some of these marked on a calendar for added anticipation.
Cool idea. I will keep coming back.

I'm with you on that man.

I say this whenever THE WOLFMAN gets brought up, but there's a distinction here that I feel needs to be pointed out. It's true that THE PRODUCTION of the film has been troubled. Hell, it's been probably the most troubled production in recent memory. But historically speaking, a troubled production does not guarantee a bad film. And in fact, the film has screened in several different cuts, and advance word from test audiences was NOT bad. The "buzz" on the actual film is that it's not bad at all and there's plenty of good performances, effects, set design, werewolfy action, etc. I'm not expecting a perfect film, but as someone who recently sat in a test screening for a highly anticipated horror movie that was flat-out awful, I'm confident that the positive word of mouth coming out of theses screenings at least should be taken as a sign of hope.

I don't think it's going to change the world or set the box office on fire, but I'm betting the THE WOLFMAN will live up to the expectations of the fans and be a fun time in the theater.
And who'd direct it? YOU, I suppose?? I see how it is.

Okay, fine, plenty of room for updateprovement with Black Lagoon. Too soon to call something The Mummy again. Dracula needs to not rise from the grave for a spell. And I know your boy Willie Del T wants Frankenstein, but it's a tough sell for me.
Just another "Yay! Another list!" comment. Looking forward to Nick's take on the next 14.
This movie just isn't doing anything for me. The CGI transformation looks awful. They just can't make it look like it's really there. Even The Howling's transformation, as goofy as it looked in parts, felt more real thanks to the reliance on makeup.

That said, the faux-period atmosphere works for me and I like Benicio in pretty much everything he's done.
Based on Sherlock Homes, I seem to have no problem at all with Plastic England. It's not as if Lon Chaney's stomping grounds looked all that real the first time around. I'll grouse with the best of them if something is CGI when practical makeup would have worked, but I spent my whole life looking at double exposures, matte paintings, forced perspective and all manner of fake landscapes, so no worries on that front.
Even with Del Toro involved I'm not that interested in a new version of Frankenstein. I'm not going to hate on it if he brings it forward, but I'd rather see him go other directions.

I'm with the general consensus in here. Creature from the Black Lagoon is the remake I'd be most interested in seeing.
Excellent idea for a list. Hopefully, it'll be a nice refresher course for some of the bigger flicks of the year ahead that I may not know all I should about (or be that excited for.) Like The Wolfman, really.
Murders in the Rue Morgue would also be cool. With the Dupin character, you even have franchise material.
Great feature, and Im hoping Wolfman ends up being great; i'd also like to say that "Hidalgo" is all sorts of fun and a great adventure flick.
Quit telling me what to do CHUD lists!

Oh okay. You can. I can't stay mad at you.
More Nick is always greatness.

I'm on the fence with Wolfman, trailers haven't sold me on it.
"Useful Lynx" is why I love CHUD and it'll always be my favorite website.

I have a good feeling about The Wolf Man, and I've loved all the trailers (which we all know means jack shit most of the time). I have ridiculously high expectations, which is probably not a good thing at all. I can't believe it's FINALLY a few weeks away.
This sounds like a fun list. I think there's a lot to be optimistic about this year.

I can't wait for The Wolf Man, and I really want it to be great. Joe Johnston is a good choice for the material and the casting of Benicio is awesome. The classic Universal Monster movies were some of the first movies I really got into as a kid. This looks to be a much cooler revival then Van Helsing.
Hidalgo has a horse stomping a cheetah to death in the middle of the Arabian desert, and it so did not earn a tongue in cheek pass for that. So fuck Hidalgo.

I really think Johnston gets a lot more love than he deserves--he's a very middle of the road talent who does serviceable work, and people way crutch on October Sky as a testament to what he can do-but all the same, I hope Wolfman is good, and would be even happier if it was great.
Just looking over the AICN 2010 preview, I see a shit-ton of movies to look forward to this year. Whittling a list down to 15 seems like not enough.

And, yeah, spot on write-up about Wolfman.

Even if it's not, I'll probably still like it. I have a sneaking suspicion, thanks to my history with Coppola's DRAC.
Johnston isn't foolproof, but he does tend to make very solid, well-crafted films. Sometimes they're misconceived on a story level, but he never botches the execution. And he directed The Rocketeer, so there's that. It does hurt to read what Baker went through, though.

This *is* a pretty interesting year for mainstream flicks...it seems like stuff like Scott Pilgrim and Kick-Ass are setting the tone, getting a little more quirky and original and nerdy. Even the inevitable slew of sequels and remakes looks pretty painless (Predators, Harry Potter, Tron) or outright exciting (Iron Man 2, Toy Story 3).
I'm just hoping that THE WOLFMAN's fate doesn't effect JJ's involvement with CAP, because I think he'd really shine.
I'll wait for CHUD reviews to decide if I see The Wolfman but for Benicio's sake I hope it's a winner.

I like what you're saying in the intro paragraphs to the feature too, I've never felt that anything but a pure love of movies as an art/entertainment form has driven the CHUD writers but it is always worth reinforcing that that's the case, especially for newer readers.
I'm not totally on board with Wolfman (every trailer makes me want to see it less) but liek some in the thread, would love to see a Universal Horror Monstare revival so it may get my money anyway.

This list however I am totally on board with and the write up on Wolfman is very well done Nick and I kinda agree with the CHUD prognosis. It may just turn out to be a fun little movie to kick the year off with.
While I certainly appreciate the article, I have to disagree. I am one of the few who are definitely NOT excited to see this. I am really apathetic about this film, despite the cast. I think it might be the excessive CGI I have seen in the trailers. Saying it doesn't feel real is really not the words I want to use to describe my feelings, but it is the only way I can describe it, for now.

You've totally sold me on Don't Be Afraid... before, Nick, but this makes me want it right now.
Nice. When's this due in theaters?
Sounds cool. Not enough monster movies being made these days, except for that abysmal Siffy Channel dogshit.

I've never seen the original. Is it even available on DVD?
The original film is now available through WB's DVD-R mail-order division. And I wouldn't be surprised if there's talk of a standard commercial release of a DVD to tie in with the new film. Nick, any word on this?

The original film was a shivery favorite of my early monster-loving childhood. I watched it every time it was on TV. And I'm actively looking forward to this remake. Quite ironic, in this age of the useless horror remakes. I totally have faith in this one. Having Marco Beltrami back on-board doing the music for a del Toro horror flick is the icing on the cake.

Nick, don't worry about looking like a shill. Definitely keep us up to date on this one. And thanks for helping to make it happen.
I heard Troy Nixey trained for six months with the Australian SAS and lived in the outback on nothing but roo meat and platypus blood in preparation for shooting this hotly anticipated feature film. I'm a fan of Latchkey's Lament and I'm not just saying that out of fear, it's a really impressively charming, fun and atmospheric short.

I'll be there opening weekend for this puppy.
Producing gig = inevitable Scientology/Tom Cruise joke following Katie Holmes's name goes bye bye!

Katie is a really great lady. Religion be damned, I think she's rock solid. So, as is often the case, once you know someone you have a different opinion of them.
Is the movie done? Just wondering if you're basing this off a close-to-final cut.

Effects aren't done, but the film ain't far from being where it needs to be.
I can't wait to see it to be honest, well done to all involved - not least of all Troy and Nick.
Is there anything like a release date being whispered about yet?
Super excited for this, Nick. Katie may be fine in it, but her image right now sucks. I hope they don't prominently feature her in the ads. That said, I will force all my friends to see it.
Other than DRAG ME TO HELL, I can't say I've been truly wowed by a horror flick in quite some time. Nick's involvement with DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK is enough reason alone to go see it, but all of the other ingredients are adding up to some amazing potential. And I have to admit Katie Holmes' role has got me intrigued, since it's a role I wouldn't have expected her to play at this point considering the very few projects she's been involved with.
Indescribably excited for this. I'm crossing my fingers for serious success for you gentleman.
Don't know why but I hadn't heard of this yet. Though I wasn't totally blown away by it, Latchkey's Lament was a really solid short and Troy is clearly very talented (he's also a Bears fan, which alone earns him a first day ticket stub). Looking forward to hearing more about this film.

Shill away Nick, I hope this flick works out great for you guys.
Good luck with the release of this one guys. I'll definitely be there opening night.
I'm in like Flynn for this one. Congrats Nick!
You lads have my well-wishes and support for Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. If I have to go through a brick wall to see this one, I will.
I'll see it for sure, but this

Katie Holmes has made horror films before but nothing like this. This is a really different and much more mature role for her. Few movies have showcased her maternal qualities and this one most certainly does. It's a really good role for her. I'm anxious to see how the web reacts to her.
C'mon. You've bashed her on the site more than the twilight guys.

I said it before, having a chance to known her and watch her work, I'm blown away. There were other people in line for the role, names you'd know. She did a great job.
I actually liked her in Batman, her presence in this film does not scare me.
