I wasn't thinking of arming myself or my fellow barristers with them. I was thinking of the cash that could be raked in with the inevitable lawsuits that will arise from the inevitable misuse of the product. Dangerous to the eyes, apparently.
There were, according to Devin's Star Trekkin' column Day 20, lawyers in TOS. But they seem to have worked thru the need for them by TNG (legal disputes were settled by ship's oficers assuming the role of advocate, as when Riker & Picard squared off to decide Data's status as a person or Starfleet property). I'd expect nothing less in a supposedly near-Utopian society.
