Spoon - Transference

Getting this out of the way first:

It's on sale today (1/19/10) only on Amazon mp3 for $3.99. GO GO GO!

I haven't had time to listen to more than the first three or four tracks, and that was in less-than-ideal, distracted conditions, but I *really* liked what I heard, and I've already been nearly obsessed with "Written in Reverse" since it was released as a single. Looking forward to a focused listen.

Thanks for the head's up. Purchased and playing now.

My thanks to you, as well!

Yeah, really solid. Not a bad track on there. If you like Spoon, I can't imagine not getting into this.

Lots of highlights, but the groove-tastic and keyboard-driven 'Nobody Gets Me But You' is the perfect way to end the album. 'Goodnight Laura' is gorgeous. The reverb in 'Who Makes Your Money' gives it a dreamy ambience that works wonders.

Britt Daniel is a genius---lyrically and vocally. He makes everything sound so effortless, cool, and fresh at the same time.

Pet peeve, hate songs that "just end", like "The Mystery Zone". Always makes me think that my iPod is fucking up.

Great album though, not as instantly listenable as Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga or Gimme Fiction, but really strong.

Funny that you should mention that, because when I was listening to that song for the first time on Rhapsody, it stopped two-thirds way through (which RARELY ever happens). Then when I restarted the music player, I thought it had stopped yet again, but the song just ended abruptly, like you said. And that didn't happen with any of the other songs. Spooky.

I wasn't expecting this album from Spoon. I'm not sure what that means, but it's a good thing. I really dig it. It feels like the lost album bridging Kill the Moon Light with Gimmie Friction.

No surprise: I love it. If you can, try and track down Britt's self-produced "Drake Tungsten" solo/side project from the mid 90's. This album really reminds me of it, which makes sense given that the band produced this album themselves.

Fake Edit: found one Drake Tungsten track on YouTube, but it's a McCartney cover: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFcgyEto1P8

They played a free show today in the Waterloo Records parking lot and played some new stuff. I hadn't heard it before, but they played "Mystery Zone" and my foot kept tapping a couple of times after it ended. There were a couple songs with abrupt endings like that.

There were so many kids and babies at the show. Lots of toddlers up on parents' shoulders and other kids dancing or running around near the back. I thought it was cool, though. Spoon's fanbase is aging along with the band.

This album rose in my estimation after seeing most of it performed live, and only continues to rise with each listen. Spoon albums are real growers, and this is no exception.

Give this another listen or two if you guys haven't yet. I'm starting to think it's a bona fide Great album. Something about it just won't let go. Tempted to use the "M" word, but I think it needs a year or two to percolate before that's even in the neighborhood of appropriate.
