Angel - Page 2

True. But he and Connor are kindred spirits in the Buffyverse Failed Character sense.

I'm slowing making my way back through the Angel seasons, but I'll admit it will be jarring when Connor shows up again as all I'll now see is "Alt-Universe Pete Campbell."

Quick question: are there any episodes in any of the seasons that I should just absolutely skip, "do not pass GO" or otherwise avoid?

Unless you're pressed for time, I'd say watch 'em all. There's going to be character moments and bits of dialog in pretty much all of them that work for somebody; and for any given one, that somebody might just be you.

That's not to say that there aren't weak episodes; just that (for me anyway) even weak Whedon is at least worth forty-some odd minutes of my time to find the good moments.

Decidedly.

Yeah, that was the plan anyway. Thanks, though.

One thing I continue to enjoy about the show is how Angel's Batman-ness is often gleefully subverted, such as in "City of" where he HEROICALLY LEAPS INTO HIS CAR...and it's the wrong one. Or in "Lonely Hearts" where his grappling hook completely fails to work. Also, my favorite throwaway bit right now is Angel telling one guy, "I swear I wasn't hitting on you!" *cackles with glee*.

I disagree. I think Riley, while initially a rough fit, had a nice story arc. Yes, he started out as a stoic, boring boy scout, but he transitions into a far more interesting, somewhat conflicted character. Moreover, his very whitebread character is, in many ways, what makes him so interesting in that it is, more or less, a unique quality within the Buffyverse.

While the success of that character arc isn't as spectacular as that of, say, Wesley or Cordelia, it's hardly a failure.

I'll give you that the writing takes him in that direction; for me, Blucas just never rounded the corner.

"In The Dark":
-Spike's "dubbing" of the conversation between Angel and Rachel is one of the funniest things I've ever seen: "Quick, to the Angelmobile! Away!" Also, it's so nice to be reminded James Marsters has talent/charm after his clearly bored performance in Dragonball Evolution (yes, I actually saw that. Don't judge meeeee!).
-Always nice to see Oz.
Not much more to say about this episode, except that it's a very solid piece of work, and Spike continues to be one of my favorite TV characters of all time.

You're going to love Season Five.

Oh, yes. Most definitely.

I sort of gave up on Angel after Season 2. I liked Pylea but I just wasn't engaging with the show at all. I've recently bought the complete Buffy DVD collection (I haven't seen Buffy since the show ended) so I'm thinking that when I start going through Buffy I might synch it up with Season 3, 4 and 5 of Angel and see if I can get back into them.

Adorable.

So I've heard. Hell, I just can't wait for "Smile Time", which is legendary amongst the fandom and in general.

Ive only watched the last 2 seasons of angel. Not a huge fantasy buff, but I absolutely loved em. Worth me going through the first 3 seasons?

"I Fall To Pieces" was a pretty solid episode; I like how the show is taking detective story cliches and plotlines and giving them a supernatural twist. I have to admit I'll kind of miss that once the show becomes more of an urban action fantasy. Ah, well.

Lonely Hearts - s1e2
The show finally starts to show its glimmers of charm with Angel being clumsy with his interactions with people in the night club. The episode does have a lot of weak points in coincidences on how Angel uses a vague vision to track down a demon that likes to jump hosts when it spoons, but its mechanism of movement kept one guessing where the killer was. Just felt a little too hokey that the bartender happened to attack Cate, and Angel happened to be there. Oh and continuing the Batman-esque of the show, we have Cate aka Gordon, Angel's new police friend.

I've always wondered what Angel's powers and limits are exactly? He seemed to do some super jump, on the street, but needed a grappling hook to get out of the basement? Could of just told Cate to look one way and superjump up, or use his vampire strength to bust down the door. Guess I need to catch up on a few episodes to see what his consistency is.

FYI, this is probably the most comprehensive Angel/Buffy thread here.
