Book Of Shadows

Why does everyone hate this movie? I'll admit that the first 30 minites was kind of slow, but I really liked the payoff in this movie. I thought it had great pacing , acting and mood. On another note I rented Dawn of the Dead last week with Zombie and Zombie blew it out of the water. The windy island, the despair all great atmosphere. I actually hated Dawn of the dead.

While I can't speak for everyone, I can't stand both BWP films. The first was a semi-admirable attempt which would have been much better had it a: not been a concept rip of Cannibal Holocaust and b: actually been a good film. But BW2 sucks.

But then, I adore DAWN OF THE DEAD.

The only thing scary about the first Blair Witch was that I kind of shows Human Nature as the monster when people are put into situations of survival

Love Book of Shadows and you had me on your side until you got to Dawn of the Dead...

Sorry man I was just SO unimpressed by this movie. I seen it when it came out and I don't think I liked it then. I loved "Day of the Dead" and the original, but Dawn just had this "cheesy" feel. The zombies in this movie sucked ass
post #6 of 36
I really really enjoyed BW2.

I don't know why everyone hated it.
I loved Blair Witch...the second one wasn't close, but it was a good movie.

But Dawn better than Zombie? That's crazy talk!

They're both great, but just by having a plot Dawn beats Zombie.
I hate both of the BWPs. The first one actually wasn't to bad but I didn't like it and I hate Book of Shadows. Now Dawn of the Dead I adore, Zombie is good too but saying it's better then Dawn of the Dead is crazy.

To disregard BLAIR WITCH as a conceptual rip-off of CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST is worse than blasting NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD as a rip of LAST MAN ON EARTH or CARNIVAL OF SOULS ... Actually, LMON and COS are actually good films, CH is not ... I'm not even sure what the point of comparisons are, because if that's the case, HALLOWEEN can't be enjoyed because it's a conceptual rip of BLACK CHRISTMAS ...

Anyways, here's my take:

DAWN - epic, one of the greatest ever

ZOMBIE - awesome zombies and gore, and Fulci's low budget approach is effective ( for once IMHO )

BWP - like Michael Powell's PEEPING TOM, time will give this great film the appreciation it's due

BOOK OF SHADOWS - an embarassing waste

What I mean is, because everyone went on about how original BWP was with the whole lost film concept, which was utter bullshit. But it doesn't stop the film from being enjoyed. The fact that BWP is utter shit stops it from being enjoyed.
BW2 would have been okay if it had just been its own movie and not a Blair Witch sequel. I like the idea of "lost time" and think it could be utilized well, but having to tie it to the BWP took away from that, I think--not to mention automatically setting it up against a standard in terms of movie-going phenomenon that it couldn't hope to live up to. The self-referential metafictional movie crap just fell flat for me, but again, it could have worked, even though in this instance it didn't.

That said, a naked redhead is ALWAYS a highlight.

Another thing--BW2 would have been better as a half-hour anthology chapter than a whole movie. Its one or two interesting concepts were stretched too thin.

Oh, and the DVD's "extra": THE SECRET OF ESREVER ? Harry Potter already used that idea, and even the elementary school readers of that series had it figured out 2 minutes after it popped up. Puh-leez.

I respect what the first BWP did. I came away from the film basically saying " It ended right when it was getting good. " so yeah.

BWP2 on the other hand is pure crap of the highest order. I'm still sorry I ever paid to see it. Other than the goth chick the film is hardly memorable. BWP2 should have been about the real Blair Witch or something. I agree this concept is stretched too thin.

This movie needed an exponentially higher amount of nudity and gore to make the story it was telling work.
The first Blair Witch was good. The 2nd one was so/so. It wasnt that good, but Ive seen worse films too.

All in all I have to say Im happy with them, espeically since I got the semi-rare box set "The Blair Witch Experience" for just 5 dollars.

Yes...thats right, I said I bought it for 5 dollars.

Never saw Dawn of the Dead
Loved BWP, Liked BWP2...Dawn of the Dead is fucking fantastic. Romero is a god...Zombie is cool too.
Don't even compare CH to BWP. BWP was much classier and better. CH was utter trash and needs to be thrown away forever.
BWP was classy? Compared to what, I Spit On Your Grave?
Cannibal Ferox maybe. Course I'd rather see dead monkey's being sacrificed and chicks hung up with meathooks thru their titties than be subjected to Heather...
No...compared to Cannibal Holocaust. I must say BWP is MUCH more classier than CH. And...well...shit on a stick is more classier than I Spit On Your Grave.

Yes but Cannibal Holocaust is much classier than Cannibal Ferox, so what are we saying here?

Now I know for a fact that Cannibal Ferox is much classier than Jungle Holocaust, which itself is only slightly classier than Eaten Alive.

Which next to Mountain of the Cannibal God looks like a goddamn masterpiece.

The Cannibal film to rule them all?

Cannibal Apocalypse. It has John Saxon.

If Blair Witch had John Saxon in it...it's be a hit!
I Spit on your Grave may be harsh, but I dunno, I don't think it's belongs alongside such nasties as the Cannibal films. Maybe because ISOYG is so austere, and the Deodato stuff has animals being killed on screen. Maybe it's just me.
Maybe. But what would Buster think?

Probably that Camille needed to trim that thang!

Nah. Buster was old school. And for old school...that was mighty fine.

I'd bang one out to her if not for the sweaty rednecks and that whole rape thing...

Actually in this case it would be me and my tissues...

Zing! Wocka wocka wocka!

I liked BW2, BTW. It wasn't perfect, but it was probably the best sequel to be made under the circumstances.

With like chicks and plot and stuff.

So want to see little Erica in Texas Chainsaw.

She's Wiccan. Wiccan good...

I liked Blair Witch, but I think Book Of Shadows was alot better. I really thought it was done well since it was pretty much thrown together to get a rub off the still semi hot original.
