Definitely check it out.

I always presume a certain age demographic on here, but odds are a bunch of you were 12-15 years old when American Movie came out. Essential viewing for any aspiring filmmaker. And one of the funniest movies this side of King Of Kong.
Agreed. This is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I literally had to pause the DVD because I was laughing so fucking hard.

Sometimes there isn't a lot to say for Milwaukee, but I am delighted that my path crosses with Borchardt's on an almost weekly basis.

I watched this recently and it was definitely the funniest doc I've seen since King of Kong. I imagine a lot of aspiring filmmakers are closer to this then they imagine.

And anyone who hasn't seen it should hurry if they want to catch this on Instant. Today is the last day it is available.

Also: Yay SOAP!

I loved this quote from Ebert's review... "I saw [Coven] at the 1999 Sundance film festival--not because it was invited there, but because after the midnight premiere of "American Movie," there wasn't a person in the theater who didn't want to stay and see Mark's 35-minute horror film"

Pretty much sums up how successful the film is at making you care about these guys.
If you can't get enough of Mark Borchardt, watch Horror Business. It's not a great film but it's an interesting look at people trying to get small horror flicks made and distributed, and showcases him directing his follow-up to Coven.

Also, if you liked American Movie watch director Chris Smith's Home Movie, also on Netflix Instant. It's a look at some bizarre people with truly ridiculous houses, really entertaining and thoughtful little flick.

Don't forget that he also directed Collapse. Guy's made some amazing docs.

The Sci-Fi/Buddy Cop Action classic, Alien Nation!

Also, the Kirk Douglas directed "Watergate Western" Posse.

Leave Her To Heaven is on Instant View. Please stop whatever you are doing and watch this, the mother of all "crazy bitch" movies, right now. It has Vincent Price chewing the scenery like he just discovered that meat tastes good.

I still love the plop down the stairs. Hell, I still have vivid memories of the boat on the lake. Fuck, Tierney was amazing in this.

I said this in the SHUTTER ISLAND thread, but I'm pretty sure Scorsese is cribbing from the movie in the last act flashback. The cinematography especially. It's between that and NIGHT AND THE CITY for my favorite GT performance, although Night is my favorite movie that she's in.
It was the Loni Anderson version's lake scene that scared me when I was a kid. I was surprised by how tough the original's is.
For whatever reason, I find it amazing that Antichrist is available for instant watching.
Sorry if I'm late to this game, but I just noticed "Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog" is now on Instant View.

Looks like the TV section is about to get a big dose of awesome in April: Complete X-Files and Arrested Development.

The Metropolis anime is coming. I know how most of you feel about anime. Anyone who saw Langs film needs to give it a shot, if for no other reason than the single greatest use of a Ray Charles song in all filmdom.

Not to mention Buffy.

I dug that film rather a lot.

Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere is available on Instant View until April 1.

This excites me. I'm a fan of the book, but never saw the series it was based on. Fuck yeah.

Heads-up, the show is pretty terrible and Gaiman wrote the book to do the series right.

Yeah, the show is not good at all, and is due for a remake.
I suggest you all watch Bronson.

Awe, that sucks. I will watch it, but I won't have any high expectations I guess. I just assumed that it would be awesome since the book was.

Haven't seen it on Netflix before, but DIRTY WORK is available. Rejoice!

Underrated but compulsively watchable and fiendishly fun Sam Fuller film noir Underworld USA. Highly recommended.

If you haven't seen Moon already, then you will really have no excuse after April 12th because it will be added as well.

Good news: La Jetee.

Bad News: English dub.

The english dub isn't horrible on it though. I always stick with subtitles when watching foreign films, mainly due to my irritation of having language not synch up with actors mouths in film. Since "La Jetee" is shot purely in still photos, it doesn't really have that bad effect.

Also, if I remember right, the booklet in my criterion DVD case might have mentioned something about each dub being recorded at the same time post-production.

No, it's not horrible. But Négroni has such an interesting voice, and the English guy is just...adequate

As if they were reading Embracing Mediocrity with us, Mortal Kombat just got added. In sexy HD, no less, which serves to highlight another plus in that flicks favor: its surprisingly well shot and designed.

Working my way through Party Down at the moment, and holy shit, I can't believe there's another sitcom I have to start following now. It's fucking awesome, everyone should check it out.
Wow, I'd never even heard of that. Thanks, Schwartz.
Not sure if anyone noticed but Raising Arizona has been put up.

Party Down already has one thing going against it in for the second season, and that's replacing Jane Lynch with Megan Mullally. And with Adam Scott joining Parks and Rec, it probably won't go beyond a second season.

But yes, if you were going to make a list of best tv comedy episodes in recent memory, the porn convention one and the one with Steven Weber would be on the short list.

So many quotable lines. It's a shame I can't remember any of them now.

That has one of the best music scores one of these productions ever had. It's a pretty good movie, but it's a great soundtrack album.
Alex Winter's Freaked comes May 1st. Never seen it, but nearly every time it's mentioned around here, someone's head nearly explodes from all the love.
This thread seems to be getting the most play WRT Netflix so I'll ask here:

Anyone else dislike the new movie pages layout besides me? I enjoyed being able to see what my Friends list thought about films and the Play/Queue buttons being underneath the film art instead of on the other side of the screen.

A shitty redesign IMO.
In general the xbox/netflix title selection wheel bugs the crap out of my eyes. I wish it was dead center in the screen...but who knows if that infringes on Apple's design for the ipod/itunes.

Today I have the day off and will be watching too much X-Files...maybe tune in where I tuned out in the later seasons.
$9.99 is pretty great, and definitely worth the stream.
