Netflix Instant View Heads-Ups - Page 34

RED WHITE & BLUE is great. It takes its time establishing the characters and their situations, getting you to empathize and feel the emotional intensity of everything, so when the physical brutality comes it's extra brutal and intense.

Sounds right up my alley.  Movies are too easy to watch nowadays.  That might be a weird thign to say, but i like my movies dark and brutal.  I'm weird.

Lots of great stuff just went up on Instant recently-- Melancholia, Submarine, Into The Abyss. (Potentially great. I haven't seen them yet, but I've heard encouraging things about them all, particularly Melancholia.)

I think Days of Heaven is a recent addition, too. But I could be wrong.

Am I just last to know or did everyone realize that The Big Lebowski is on there?

Wait did you mean into the abyss? Because for anyone thinking it's James Cameron's The Abyss, it isn't. Would have been nice though, the DVD isn't anamorphic.

Yes, I did. Thanks for catching the omission there; I've corrected my original post. My bad!

William Friedkin's Rampage -- not available on DVD in America -- has been on there for a couple weeks; haven't seen it mentioned here.

From the looks of it, it's the '92 recut, where Friedkin went back and changed the ending when it finally got a release from Miramax. (It was finished in '87, was shown at a few festivals, then its distributor DEG went under. In the intervening years Friedkin apparently changed his mind about whether the flick should be more ambiguous about its death-penalty stance -- which the '87 cut reportedly was -- or more pro-death penalty. According to my sources the original cut is on European DVD/laser, while only the '92 cut has ever been seen in America. There's a version on YouTube purporting to be the '87 cut. [EDIT: It appears to be, yes.])

Also it's not letterboxed on Netflix. Boo. Probably digitized from the VHS. Well, it's 1.85 and Friedkin is weirdly anti-letterboxing anyway, so maybe the way he composed the flick it doesn't make much difference.

Still worth it for Friedkin completists; solid work from Michael Biehn (no surprise there) and Alex McArthur (where is he now?...*checks IMDb*...damn, he got old).

Rampage really freaked me out.  It's based on the true story of Richard Chase, the "Vampire of Sacramento," and I thought very well done as a chiller.  I don't know which version I saw but I'm pretty sure I saw it in a movie theater way back when.  I'll def. check it out on Netflix.  Thanks!

Easy way to tell:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

In the '87 cut, the killer commits suicide in his cell. In the '92 cut, he doesn't.

Checked out Red White & Blue thanks to this thread. Glad I did; it's relentlessly grim, but a must-see for fans of visceral low-budget filmmaking. Thanks for the recommendation

Saturday the 14th also recently popped up. My wife remembered it fondly, but it was absolutely terrible. Features a young Jeffrey Tambor as a vampire, as well as some of the worst special effects, direction and editing I've ever seen.

Watched both versions of Rampage. The '87 version kicks the shit out of the '92 version. Unfortunately the '92 version is the one that's on Netflix. Proceed with caution. Still good work by Biehn and McArthur (and Nicholas Campbell!), but their performances are better and have more shading in the '87 cut.

K2....another "lost" Biehn film......is also up on Instant.  I plan on watching it soon.  Definitely going to check out both versions of Rampage as well.  I've been wanting to see both films for years.

Once you've seen both (and if you Google "friedkin rampage" you're not far away from finding the '87 cut) you might want to look up Video Watchdog #13, which has a typically anal-retentive comparison article on the two versions.

No shit.  I remember loving that movie as a kid.  Then I caught it on Encore (I think) a few weeks ago, and holy shit it was awful.  The best part was seeing Kari Michaelsen in the tub.  I can usually get through these older movies with nostalgia (Sword & The Sorcerer, Teen Witch, etc.), but oh my lord this was just terrible.  I couldn't even finish it.

Lucky Mckee's The Woman is on instant.

If you're a Biehn fan, get right on K2.  Good times.

Both Rampage and K2 are only in fullscreen so thanks but I can't stand that shit.

With Rampage it doesn't matter all that much. It's 1.85 and Friedkin most always frames his shots to be TV-friendly. Indeed, the full-frame Sorcerer DVD everyone complains about is full-frame precisely because Friedkin insisted on it. Apparently dude doesn't dig the black bars. Though he may have changed his tune since every TV nowadays is more or less 1.85-shaped anyway and you then get the bars on the sides if it's 1.33. But it's a rare Friedkin film that goes wider than 1.85 — I think there's Rules of Engagement and that's about it.

Unless you're talking about you can't stand watching a non-anamorphic 1.33 thing in the middle of your widescreen TV, in which case, yeah, I can see that. That's annoying. I watched Rampage on my iPad so it didn't bother me. In fact, on there it didn't look 1.33; looked rectangular-ish.

Rampage was a sick video game.  I liked to use the Lizard.

Todd Rohal's Cataclysm Catachism is now on Watch Instantly. It's a lot of fun and gets wonderfully insane at the end. Steve Little from Eastbound plays a Catholic priest/wannabe metalhead, so you can't really go wrong.

I beat Rampage on New Years Eve 1997. Best New Years Eve ever.

Truth! When a new season is added to Netflix I watch the series from the beginning. It doesn't diminish with repeat viewings at all.

Myup. Definitely worth the watch, especially 2.

This. Pusher is great. I was going though a heavy crime movie phase and Pusher is undeservedly obscure. So quirky and watchable. Mostly for the actors. And then the sequel makes you realize you just got Godfathered. Three was an experiment that failed. That director really let the leads drive those movies and Mikkelson is so good in this one. He elevates his character from the first movie without contradicting it.

Adaptation, Snatch, The Addams Family movies, Insomnia, Starship Troopers, Hannibal and Groundhog's Day are just some of the latest batch.

I understand.

Any dreams you have, or plans or hopes for tomorrow, I think you're going to have to put that on hold.

Seriously, if you haven't seen this movie yet...

The Wild Hunt is available. It's a weird one, about Renn Faire nerds losing their shit and getting dark, and you should all check it out.

Tyrannorsaur went up recently. Great watch. Considine's as good behind the camera as he is in front of it, though the film is much more about Mullen's performance than anything else.

London Boulevard, written/directed by the guy who wrote The Departed, is up. Based on the novel by one of my fave noir writers, Ken Bruen.

Not very good really. Basically Carlito's Way in London. It has it's moments until you.....well you'll say.

I'm still waiting for that movie where the Cosplay guys accidentally unleash some monster in real life--a comedy, I think with Summer Glau.  The Knights Of Something Something or a title similar to that.  Saw the trailer seems like ages ago, but never saw the movie released.

Wild Hunt is really good.  Well worth seeing.

London Boulevard is not very good and not well worth seeing.

Knight's of Badassdom is the movie, I believe.  Yeah, that trailer was fun.  Wild Hunt is really different, though.  Very serious, with brief moments of humor.

I highly recommend The Wild Hunt.

And I second the Tyrranosaur praise. Mullan is magnificent in it. But the movie is fucking heartbreaking for the huge majority of the running time. Definitely not light viewing.

Hey now, I fucking LOVE Carlito's Way.

That said, I haven't heard the best things about London Boulevard.

No I love Carlito's way as well which is why I don't need to see it again in a brit accent.

We are and it doesn't work here at all. It feels way more like haha gotcha motherfucker! than a commentary on the gangster lifestyle.

Congo is available, if Joshua's article piqued your interest.

Boy Wonder is up. I had never heard about it but it's a low budget take on a real life superhero without the humor of Kickass and Super and a much darker ending.

Interesting.  Might have to give it a look.

It's pretty good.  There's some interesting stuff in there, and the acting is decent.  It's not really a "real life" superhero tale, and more in the vein of a low budget Death Wish/Sentence type movie.  Dark ending though.

Well when I said real life I mean't the entire thing is far more plausible then either one of those movies including the ending.
