Netflix Instant View Heads-Ups - Page 35

The Trip, with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon is up. Just terrific.

Just watched an awesome little ghost flick on instant called Grave Encounters. It's of course another documentary style deal but this one spoofed all of those awful Ghost Hunter shows, specifically Ghost Adventure. From there it gets pretty fucked up and it really works, surprised it didn't get a bigger release with the success of paranormal activity. It didn't reinvent the wheel but it's up there with Lake Mungo.

Have to give a shout out for The Green, a small indie about a gay teacher facing false accusations from a student.  It's nothing amazing, a bit overly melodramatic at times, and they seem to have fucked up the transfer somewhat (aspect ratio is off.)  However, it's one of the best times I've had working on a production, helped in no small part by the fact it was shot in my hometown.

Not new to Instant, but anyone jonesing for some more Alien/Prometheus-esque fare should watch Planet of the Vampires and/or It! The Terror From Beyond Space.  Both heavily influenced Alien, particularly the former whose influence is felt in Prometheus as well.  It! isn't the greatest movie, but Mario Bava's Planet of the Vampires is pretty good and atmospheric as hell.

Watched The People vs. George Lucas the other day. And at this point in my Star Wars fandom I'm just tired of this argument.  While the "documentary" was entertaining I got pretty annoyed with everyone bitching about something that they admitted to seeing 13 times in the theater.  But if you're a Star Wars fan, it's worth watching.

That's the very reason that I've held off watching it.  I'm tired of listening to fanboys complain about disappointing entries in their favorite franchises...be it film, TV, comics, novels, etc.  Complaining about it at the time of release?  Go for it.  Still holding a grudge over a decade later?  Re-evaluate your priorities in life.

Gonna have to watch this, Lake Mungo was pretty solid.

We've been having a bit of a Grave Encounters conversation in the horror thread, and while it's a good movie that you should watch, I'd suggest you know going in that it's a low budget found footage movie with, frankly, kind of iffy acting. The script is surprisingly strong though, and they do manage to put some nice images on film. And I'll admit, the extent to which things get bad was above and beyond expectations. It stayed with me a bit longer than I thought it would too.

Not nearly as much as Lake Mungo though. I can't stop telling people how awesome that movie was. It's also completely different in tone from Grave Encounters.

Really you thought the acting was Iffy? I thought it was pretty spot on. At the start it was intentional due to them putting on an act for the show. That is actually one of the reasons I dug it. They perfectly nail those stupid ghost shows and the mugging those guys do for the camera complete with badass slow motion walk and line up.

But your right the tone was different from Mungo, I mentioned it because it falls into the same found footage/documentary category.

For those jonesing for more Avengers heroics, Thor is available now.

Plissken, thanks for recommending Planet of the Vampires, an enjoyable movie I otherwise would've overlooked.

Your welcome.  It's amazing how heavy an influence it has over both of Scott's Alien films.

I would never have known Planet of the Vampires is on Instant if not for this thread. Fantastic. I know what I'm doing tonight.

Also: Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie is on Instant. Yay? I guess?

It is, without question, a Tim & Eric movie, with all that implies.

Adding Planet of the Vampires to my queue now. Thanks!

The Tim & Eric movie is a mixed bag. Some of the stuff is hilarious (the Shrim video, a restaurant called "Inbreadables" where everything is made of bread and a terrible comedian tells bread-related jokes, Will Forte as the verbally abusive proprietor of a sword shop) and Ray Wise gets one of the funniest lines in any movie this year. Still, it gets tedious at several points, and I wished John C. Reilly had shown up as Dr. Steve Brule, but there's a healthy dose of irate Robert Loggia and the cameos are great.

Glad to see so many of you experiencing Planet of the Vampires.

Yeah, unfortunately XTRO 1 and 2 aren't on Instant Watch.  Don't think 3 is on there either.

Don't know if this is new, but I just discovered Rounders is up. It's not a great movie or Dahl's best, but it's a whole lot of fun

I have such a Pavlov's dog reaction whenever I hear 'Rounders'; I instantly crave oreos, twisted apart.

I love Rounders, it's such a goofy, fun film. Malkovich is at his most Malkovichy (chewing up every scene as if its his last), and Damon and Norton are great bouncing off each other.

I've spent the past week or so watching through Luther, which is all on Instant Watch, and it's pretty terrific. If you're looking for an Idris Elba fix (and really, why wouldn't you be) it's well worth your time.

Uwe Boll's provocation Blubberella is up. Who dares?

One thing I really like about Rounders is that there's no lame "gambling is evil" moral. The characters nearly lose everything and at the end they still play high stakes games.

Watched over the weekend, really enjoyed it. Thanks!

Yeah, I did as well--my wife would laugh at some of the acting and effects, but I kept reminding her this was from the 60s.  Very creepy vibe.  I enjoyed it.

Got to admit, I wasn't feeling Planet of the Vampires. Interesting in a historical sense, and especially in light of Prometheus, and that big scene in the giant's ship was a lot of fun, but a little of that old school scifi aesthetic goes a long way for me. It felt like a pretty damn great Twilight Zone stretched to three times it's appropriate length. That said, I've spent worse lazy afternoons.

I also finally checked out Ironclad, and was surprised by how much fun it was. Narratively a bit limp, what with the Kate Mara subplot, and James Purefoy is like 100 times better playing impudent sexy rascals than he is playing haunted leading men, but otherwise that cast is having an absolute ball. The big scene between Brian Cox and Paul Giamatti was an absolute delight. And holy fuck, what a violent movie. For such a low budget film, it looked great too.

Battle Royale's 1 & 2 are up. I love the first one, but can pass on the second.

It really is awful how Netflix seems unable to let users know of new movies.

I usually check Recently Added or New Releases once a month, but I always thought maybe an email notification for these might be good. Unless they have one and I missed it.

Yeah but not ALL new releases are listed.

I'd go one further and say that all of the "Watch it Again" titles aren't listed for me for whatever reason. Makes no damn sense...

Don't waste your time checking Netflix for updates, they're so behind themselves, it's kinda crazy.  These third-party sites, linked to before, are where I get my info: FeedFliks:http://feedfliks.com/streaming/coming-soon

I headed right on over to this thread to post, but......beaten to the punch.  Watching E1 right now.  Glorious stuff.

Interesting documentary. Imagine: This guy from Repo Man with the obsession of Henry Darger. Or something.

I can tell you already from watching the first 15 or so minutes of it on a Showtime channel earlier in the year, do NOT watch it. Trust me. It is brutally unfunny, I have zero idea as to the time period it's even supposed to take place in, there's a character that not only cross-dresses, but is in BLACKFACE, none of the "humor" even got a mild chuckle out of it, things were totally amateurish... it's not even worth trying to watch to laugh at how bad it is; it's just a bad sort of bad which will cause a lot of pain. And I'm one who says that Boll usually isn't as putrid as a lot of people say he is just because he made some hilariously inept films almost 10 years ago. Other directors deserve the hate, but no way can I defend this.

I unfortunately can't recommend any movies that just got added that the typical person on here doesn't know anything about.

I really wanna watch a good horror film, something that's actually scary.  Any unknown gems I should be aware of on here?

"Actually scary" is tricky because it's so subjective. I recently watched a cool film called THE PERFUME OF THE LADY IN BLACK. Sort of a mix of giallo and Polanski-esque psychological horror with occult undertones. It's not likely to give you nightmares or anything but it's effectively creepy and certainly worth a look.

Well earlier I recmmended Grave Encounters......too bad Lake Mungo isn't up anymore.

Grave Encounters is better than most, but you need to stick with it. I initially turned it off because all of the characters were annoying me, especially the "host's" extra douchey Chris Angel vibe.

/edit

Of course if you want some good scary comedy you have a lot to choose from: (that is if you haven't seen already seen these)

Trick r' Treat
Creepshow
Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight
House
Waxwork
Tucker and Dale vs Evil
Pontypool
Severance

Not to mention some modern classics like

Candyman
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
Burnt Offerings
Jeepers Creepers (the first half)
Session 9
The Exorcist
Carrie
ect...

I also would recommend seeking out a few of the Master's of Horror episodes. My favorite being the Fair Haired Child.

I'm personally not a fan of that one, but you could do worse.

Watched Grave Encounters the other night...pretty good, but the ending was pretty weak.

Appreciating the genius of The Larry Sanders Show, finally. Hank's drunk dance in the divorce episode from S3 is incredible. Thank you, internets (and Jeffrey Tambor)!

Interesting, I was impressed with how far they pushed the ending into miserable hopelessness. And since I didn't like the leads, I was totally cool with them suffering terrible fates. Kind of made the movie for me.

Battle Royale (the lesser Special Edition version) is up with Japanese/English audio and English subtitles.

Isn't that when Larry asks him how he's managing to be so calm/serene, Hank gives him the recipe of liquor and one of Larry's own prescription pills, Larry takes one of the pills w/ his cocktail and cut to Larry dancing mellowly by himself?

I love that show. When I finish the series I require all my willpower to not rewatch it immediately.

Yes and even better if you have seen any of those Ghost Hunter type shows. I don't but my father loves them and the opening of this movie is exactly like Ghost Adventure(or whichever one has skip the psychic) complete with bullshit childhood ghost story while standing in front of a grave brooding and the the douchey slow mo walk. It really is fucking perfect in that regard.

Thanks for an amazing couple of days. That duckling was going to be dinner probably right after Louie flew off.

That said, in the last episode, was surprised not to see the 13yr old niece around.

Finally saw this for the first time, and loved it...I kinda wished I'd seen the original theatrical, as I'm guessing the stuff I felt were unnecessary might have been part of it. (The 3 epilogues? At the very least, the 2nd epilogue being a repetition of a scene earlier in the film) I usually prefer subtitles to the English dub, but I thought it was fine.

Still, I found it fantastic, and would really like to buy the Blu-Ray if the transfer is sharp.

Yeah, if this was any other show, I'd be worried about how they're gonna handle another kid running around. But it's Louie.

If anything, the "I'll wait for you!" moment is the part to worry about. That poor, dumb bastard.

I've been watching Battle Royale and I have to ask, was it always this dark? I have multiple copies of the DVD and I remember it being dark, but not so dark you couldn't make out the faces of people in the night scenes. It could be my setup but I haven't had this problem before on Netflix.
