Hey Morty, the flawed gem Undercover Blues is up.

"No Morty.  My name is MUERTE!  My name is DEATH!"  Tucci is great in that flick.  Haven't seen it in years, will have to give it a rewatch.

So many great lines in Undercover Blues, Tucci is manic and Quaid is just having fun.  My best friend and I saw it in the theater cold without knowing anything about the plot. We were the only ones there, but damn, the movie surprised us with how funny it was and we filled the theater with our own laughs.

Jane Blue: You took our child into a knife fight?
Jeff Blue: It was a fair fight. Two of them, two of us..

Jeff Blue: [answering phone] Y-ello.
Muerte: This is Blue?
Jeff Blue: Speaking...
Muerte: Do you remember me?
Jeff Blue: Well, you have a really sexy voice. But hey, I'm a happily married man.
Muerte: Well, you'll be a dead man soon.
Jeff Blue: [laughing] Who is this again?
Muerte: This is Muerte.
Jeff Blue: Morty!
Muerte: No! No Morty! MUERTE! "DEATH"!
Jeff Blue: Yeah right, death...
Muerte: That's right. I'm gonna come for you man. I'm gonna come for you, and I'm gonna kill you, okay and...
Jeff Blue: Hey hey hey Morty, Morty, Morty, it's late. What's the bottom line here?
Muerte: The bottom line? The bottom line is you're gonna die man... Ugly, okay?
Jeff Blue: Look Morty, do me a favor, okay? Don't call here any more unless you want to have, like, a serious conversation, alright?
[hangs up on him]

Their daughter would be around twenty-twenty-two now. Emma Stone sequel!

Ooh, didn't know Bill Hader was also a writer for SP.

I watched this at New York Comic Con last year and thought it was one of the most cohesive and informative docs I'd seen in a while. And I don't even watch South Park. Check it out, it's a great look into both the writing and animation process.

Perhaps soliciting to a demographic of one (me) but: "Fishing With John": awkward, semi-surreal faux nature show with John Lurie.

And Miranda July's new movie, "The Future"

Last gasp of Corman: Carnosaur or Slumber Party Massacre?

Then, I try to watch all my remaining BU: The Final Countdown, Machine Gun McCain, The Big Racket being the big titles.

Same here:  I don't watch South Park.  Although, this doc has made me start watching the later and more recent seasons (they're all up at Netflix).  Loved this doc.  Thought it was funnier than the show.  And yup, informative as hell.  As a matter of fact, a good friend and extremely knowledgeable in computer stuff told me about this doc.  And it was this doc that made me disregard the Mac towers and go for a brand new iMac (which I love), instead.

The Frank Oz directed, "Death at a Funeral" is up.  Been wanting to watch this.

Bobcat Goldwait's anti-social "God Bless America". Read the reviews, but I will give it a chance.

Has anyone else noticed the MGM movies are all a little quieter than others?  It could just be a coincidence, but every movie I have to turn up ends up being one of theirs; Mulholland Falls, Poltergeist II, Network.

It's not new, but I finally got around to Four Lions, and really loved it. Best thing I've seen in a while.

...and, if anyone cares:  S3 of Warehouse 13 is up.

Who wouldn't be interested in that?

And I just noticed that Rampart and The Devil's Double are up.

Watched Brett Morgan's ("The Kids Stay In The Picture") "30 for 30: June 17th, 1994" - A very cool art-school-style take on the LAPD/OJ Simpson low-speed chase, extra interesting to me since it was the same day I graduated from high school.

Also recommend "30 for 30: Once Brothers" which shows how basketball players from Yugoslavia barnstormed the NBA in the late 80s just before the the national team went all to hell during the civil war between Croatia and Serbia.  The documentary focuses on Vlade Divac, the seven-foot-tall superstar who came to the US knowing zero English, but quickly became friends with Magic Johnson and adapted his game.  Divac's journey back to the US and into 21st Century Croatia is such a great spin on the Hollywood "Serbian bad-guy" trope because Divac is genuinely interested in healing wounds between friends and family across the former Yugoslavia.  Kinda slow, sappy, and made-for-tv at some points, but definitely rewarding if you stick with it.

My wife and sister apparently - they watched 5 minutes before they made me switch to "Thinner", which I had amazingly never seen.  "Thinner" has the dubious accomplishment of being the worst movie I've ever seen adapted from Steven King, and that includes ABC Network crap and "Night Flyer".

I captioned both of those at my old job. The "June 17th, 1994" one was especially difficult due to the overlapping soundbites. But it was very interesting, as I remember the date in question vividly for reasons unrelated to sports.

Tried to watch "Death at a Funeral" on Sunday with my folks, and the picture kept freezing indeterminately while the audio rolled on. Didn't happen to anything else we watched. Weird.

My wife and I actually went to the theater to see it.  There were about 10 of us in the theater.  My wife thought she might have to leave at one point because she was laughing so hard for so long. It's an awesome movie--if by some chance you saw the Chris Rock version first, you'll forget about that one in a hurry.

I love how June 17th, 1994 combined all of the events of that day: The parade for the Rangers, game 1 of the Finals, Palmer retiring ... At times, it's so mesmerizing, almost like the Koyannisqatsi of sports.

I watched the 30 for 30 docs about Steve Bartman and Jordan's time playing baseball...Both are well worth seeking out, with the Bartman doc being especially illuminating. I never realized that the fan uproar started outside the stadium before spreading to the fans inside Wrigley. Fascinating.

The Chris Rock version has been up for some time, now.  I've been avoiding it like the plague!  I've had the original in our DVD queue for awhile, but noticed the "Play" option and immediately set to watch it!  :D

Two more TV shows with recent seasons added:  Burn Notice (S5) and White Coller (S3).  ;)

The best part for me about "June 7th, 1994" is the behind-the-scenes footage of Bob Costas looking confident but annoyed as news crew on both coasts scramble to keep track of OJ reports while Costas is still obligated to do professional play-by-play of an NBA Finals game.  My family has kind of an Olympic's "legend of Bob Costas" inside-joke about how Costas never, EVER flubs a line or acts unprofessionally - Artie Lange once said something to the effect that "When Bob Costas records a book-on-tape, he sits down in front of the microphone, reads the first half of the book without a mistake, sips a glass of water, reads the second half of the book without a mistake, then leaves."

Always a pro:

Joe Dante is a Big Deal at CHUD, right?

Small Soldiers up.

The Relic and Capote are up.   And I see a few more Stephen King films have been added, too.

Why can't Instant ever have good movies like Amazon Woman on the Moon?

Also, count me as seriously bummed that the MST3K's are trickling away and haven't been added to in at least a year.

Ugh, the Relic. Such a terrible waste of good source material.

I think you got that reversed

No, it's not literature per se, but it is a fun Crichton clone. And Penelope Ann Miller was/is a terrible lead.

The Relic. Tom Sizemore. It's like he had to live up to his name.

I actually think Relic is the adaptation the book deserved, which isn't exactly a slam on either.

Both Warrior and Rampart are up.  I searched this thread to see if either were mentioned, didn't see that they were.  So...there you go.

The Relic and Mimic were released about the same time, weren't they?  I left The Relic as a rental and saw Mimic in the theater instead.  Relic was okay....it's a decent enough film to have on while I paint ;)

I can't recommend Rampart. There were moments but but boy that didn't work for me.

Really? I just want to see Woody Harrelson's performance.  Kinda curious about it.

Roger Ebert just posted the following on Facebook, about the movie, "Mona Lisa":

Quote:
My daily streamer. The news came today that Bob Hoskins is retiring because of Parkinson's disease. He created many wonderful performances, not least his lead role in Neil Jordan's "Mona Lisa." He played a short, fierce, bullet-headed foot soldier in the London underworld, who has just gotten out of prison. He's assigned to drive the call girl Simone (Cathy Tyson) around to expensive hotels and private homes and to wait for her while she conducts her business. You can tell how much they will eventually like each other by how much they hate each other at first. On Netflix Instant. My four-star review: http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/19860702/REVIEWS/607020303

Didn't know he (Bob Hoskins) was retiring and had Parkinson's.  Sad.

Oh no don't get me wrong Woody is very good and I wish he had been this same character in a better film.

And yes very sad about Hoskins.

While not available to "rent", Rulers of the City IS in that Fernando Di Leo Collection: Volume One Blu-ray set that came out recently.  It ended up being the only one I watched out of the lot of Di Leo Italian crime flicks that were expiring because I fully intend on buying it.

What the hell is wrong with The Night Flyer?!?  I'd easily rank it among the better King films once you get past the classics.

Yeah, but "once you get past the classics" is a pretty grim place to be when it comes to King adaptations, so that's faint praise. NIGHT FLIER is better than some but still not too good overall, in my opinion. I mean, it's okay. Good at times but definitely bad at others.

Re: God Bless America.

My girlfriend and I were not expecting much, but we both really liked it. Yes, it was just a string of rants. I liked the rants. I think your enjoyment of this movie will be proportionate to how much you agree with its politics.

Let the shitstorm begin.

I mostly just liked that it starred Bill Murray's brother.

I was interested in the movie for about 40 minutes, but I zoned out after a while. I think World's Greatest Dad is a better, more cohesive film.

No shitstorm here. I agree with most of what the main character said. I didn't think the film itself cohered into anything worthwhile.

As say this as someone who would put World's Greatest Dad as one of the best comedies of the decade.

I wasn't  overwhelmed, I just found it amusing to watch Daily Show/Bill Mahr style rants married to the plot of N.Born Killers, Thelma/Louise, Badlands, &tc.

Eph y'all for the heads up on The Relic. heh.  Kidding. Anyway, I decided to give it a watch.  I didn't like it years ago, but thought I would try it again.  Big mistake. What a horrible shitstorm of a movie - still.  Almost nothing works. It's so damn dark, the lead sucks and the cg is mediocre at best and almost Spawn quality at its worst.  I now know I never have to watch it again.  I want to like it on some level, but I just can't.
