Small Soldiers

I watched Small Soldiers after it popped up on instant. I recalled not loving it in 1998, but given Dante and a more informed palate, I figured maybe I'd dig it more now. And I did for the first half. It's very Gremlins-y in its set-up, with people like Dick Miller showing up. It's also fun to try to remember a time where if you've got David Cross and Jay Mohr in your movie, you make Cross the nice guy and Mohr the asshole. Plus the toys would be pretty cool toys.

But it really tried my patience in the second hour. The toys are just not a credible threat, and they don't do anything too interesting. It's fine, I suppose, but there's nothing it really offers that Gremlins and others don't do better.

For some reason I rewatched Stephen King's Thinner. It was a mistake.

I recently saw the theatrical cut of Last of the Mohicans for the first time ever thanks to Instant. I think on the whole I prefer the Director's Cut more, but it's fantastic Netflix has up the original in HD since it's not available on DVD or BLU.

Oh nice, I didn't realize any version of Last of the Mohicans was up. Thanks.

No problem, I was watching it and all of a sudden it occurred to me that little bits and pieces seemed to be different than I'd ever seen them before.

Put me in the camp of loving Bobcat Goldthwait's GOD BLESS AMERICA.

A few off-the-beaten-path flicks of note - THE HAUNTING OF JULIA a creepy Peter Straub adaptation and William Friedkin's controversal CRUISING.

I thought it was about a boarding school being taken over by terrorists.

Really fucking confused now.  Time to go to IMDB

Small Soldiers, that one with the CGI toys that looked like GI Joe fighting monsters (who were the real good guys) called the Gorgonites.

The whole thing was pretty forgettable.

I'll pimp an old favorite again: Jonathan Demme's well-crafted, Hitchcockian thriller LAST EMBRACE (the best DePalma movie DePalma never made). Roy Scheider is great in a paranoia drenched performance, one of his best, and the finale at Niagra Falls is a breathtaking set piece.

Just watched an interesting cheap scifi deal called Hunter Prey. Low budget as shit yet I was pleasently surprised how good it was. Problem is it's gone on the 15th .

Anyone have an opinion on the Willem Dafoe tiger hunter film they just put up? (called The Hunter?) I've been considering it.

not as good as the Val Kilmer lion hunting film.

I heard it was quite good until the ending, which shits all over all the beds.  I fully intend to watch it and see if this happens.

I thought that was the one with Danzig killing babies and raping mothers.  Or is that Last Caress?  Man, now I'm confused.

I noticed Monty Python's The Meaning of Life is up.  At least, it was listed in the "most popular" category and I've never seen it listed anywhere before.

Platoon is now streaming....

As is Heaven's Gate.  And this:

I love the Quay Brothers.

THE HUNTER is so far my favorite movie from this year. And the ending is heartbreaking and beautiful; anyone who says it shits the bed doesn't have a heart. May be Willem Dafoe's career best performance.

WAY better than The Ghost and the Darkness, but it's an apples and oranges comparison. Hunter is a character piece; TGATD is a moderately entertaining, mostly dumb period action movie directed by the supremely tone deaf Stephen Hopkins.

Anyone else experiencing issues with their Instant queue?

Mine recently decided to reorganize our titles on its own and refuses to allow us to change the order.  Hell, if I delete Charade from #184 on the list and then re-add it.......it reappears back at #184 automatically.  I've contacted Netflix twice about this and while they have worked on it (or still are?), the issue has yet to be resolved.  It's not so bad in terms of viewing titles on our X-Box 360 in the bedroom, as you can easily search for whatever you want, but it is a bitch on our Blu-ray player.

On the player, it just has a side-scrolling feature showing all of the posters going from #1 to (in our case) #400.  You can backtrack from #1 over to the end of the queue, but if what I want is in the middle....well, that's a lot of button mashing.  Previously I'd just pop on the laptop and bump any title in the middle that I wanted to watch to the top and be done with it, though I usually keep ones I want to watch soon near the top anyway.  Can't do that at the moment though.  The worst part of it is that my wife only has about 10 titles in the queue that are purely for her own viewing.  I always keep them at the tip-top of the list so that she can access them quickly and now they are scrambled throughout the list like the rest of the titles.

It looks like I'll be calling again tomorrow to check their progress and see what the hell is up, but I just wanted to see if anyone else out there was experiencing (or has previously experienced) the same issue?

Via internet, no problems.  I just checked and reorganized (and found out Black Rain was still in our instant queue) - no issues.  Now, we may have similar issues via player (PS3 in one room and a Sony player in another).  I'll have to check.  I do know that the layout is different on these players than the Xbox.  Searching for a title has not been an issue, too.

Yeah, it seems that this is an issue that is likely unique to myself or at least a select few.  I guess that's a good thing, on the whole.

The Quay Brothers?  Explain?  The poster intrigues me.

Man, I have a unique experience everywhere I access Netlfix.  The one consistent issue is that I cannot reorganize the order of my queue anywhere.  However, Netflix is annoying no matter where I use it.  Netflix needs to create their own app and do their best to make one version at one time.  Everytime I call them, they send me to the manufacturer to fix the issue.  I was told, "we only license it - they create the application".

I have the occasional movie I can't remove from the queue for a day or two. And my queue is always in flux on all devices, but more so on the tail ends of it for some reason, or so it seems.

ETA: Glengarry Glen Ross is up, which is great cuz I've been jonesing for some Mamet.

So, I have an older blu ray player (2 years) that has Netflix on it.  How can I access more then 100 episodes when I queue up a TV series.  I had South Park on my queue and wanted to watch Fun Time With Weapons, and I couldn't find it due to only having 100 randomly selected titles.  I had to log on with my computer, start the episode, then log off, go to the Netflix queue on my BD player, then select "resume" play when I selected South Park.  Big hassle just to watch one show.

The Hunter is outstanding. Dafoe shines throughout the run time, and there's a scene that makes great use of Springsteen's "I'm On Fire.". I highly recommend it.

Sorry about the vagueness of that post!  I learned of the Quay Brothers when I was studying animation.  Their stop-motion stuff is damn fine.  And sometimes, haunting and oftentimes, weird.

Here's a link that'll provide some background to who they are: http://www.zeitgeistfilms.com/film.php?directoryname=quayretrospective&mode=filmmaker

I've got a short of theirs somewhere.  I need to find it.....

Even though you are all rude little pigs, and you would never dreeeeeeeeaaaaaaam about doing this to your mother, Glenn Gary Glenn Ross is up.

WAtchin it now. Coffee is for closers

They finally figured out the issue.  When you access your Instant queue, you are basically accessing a cloud.  Apparently my account is trying to access a non-existent version of my Instant queue's cloud and that is the cause of the problems.  Everything will supposedly be fixed by sometime tomorrow at the latest.

As for accessing my Instant queue from multiple devices, the only time they are ever in a different order is on the 360.  For some reason, the latest update of X-Box's Netflix software lists your queue in alphabetical order as opposed to whatever order you place the titles in yourself.  Any other time I access it, be it PC, Blu-ray, phone, etc....they always appear in the order that we have them placed in the queue.  Honestly, the above is the only problem I have ever really had with my Netflix service.

Ok, two raves and I'm sold on The Hunter. Will return with my thoughts. Could use a break from Jaws special features, after all

Basically, you are fucked man.  I have the same problem.  It's a restriction set by the application provided by the manufacturer.  I have an LG390, and when I call, Netlfix just sends me back to LG.  The player was great at the time I bought it, but now it's outdated.  I can't even search with this player.  I can only access my instant queue.

Maybe you can update the firmware, but yeah, chances are you're stuck w/ the outdated UI.  Get a cheap Roku.

Spend the extra nickle and get a PS3.  It also plays "Call of Duty"

Yeah, the PS3 is the best blu ray player you can buy.

Ralph Bakshi's and Frank Frazetta's Fire & Ice is up.

Fire and Ice just dropped off of Instant last month, along with some other Blue Underground titles, like Vigilante. Thankfully, it's back.

If I'm not mistaken, Blue Underground has a deal with Netflix to where you can't rent the disc version of their bd titles, but you can stream the same titles (if they're available) in HD.

Super 8 is up.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi is up now. I've been wanting to see this for a while.

I missed Jiro Dreams of Sushi when it had a short run at the local independent theater earlier this year, and it had completely slipped my mind since then.   Thanks for the heads up, Brandhay!

De nada. I'm just stoked it's available. Once again I'll be frustrated at the lack of a good sushi restaurant w/in 100 miles. :(

Jiro is a pleasant watch, but you won't have a truly satisfying experience if you don't plan on having sushi that's at least decent during or after. Otherwise it ends and you'll think, 'Goddamn, I wish I could have some sushi right now.

That's the last straw, HypnoToad. You're kicked off the boards.

Dammit! I leave for one week of vacation, come back, and ignore everything that happened in that time.

Now, excuse me, I have to go let the TV board know that this is the last season of The Office.
