Netflix Instant View Heads-Ups - Page 2

Yeah BAGHEAD was kinda lame. Pre-emptive heads-up: ANTICHRIST on 2/25.
Baghead isn't that bad. The buildup is good, it's just that the ending's easy to guess. And Gerwig has the only non-generic character.

Aelita: Queen of Mars is on there, a 1924 science fiction film, billed as the first Russian one. I've watched half, and it has a neat mix of real world images and cheesy Martians. The editing speed is certainly more modern than most American silent dramas.
So far this weekend I've watched BIG FAN, WORLD'S GREATEST DAD, THE ORPHANAGE, and THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST, all in HD. As long as you have a fast connection, this service is the bee's knee's.

EDIT: Oh, and a freaky little movie about people who want to be amputees called QUID PRO QUO starring Vera Farminga and Nick Stahl.
There's a chance I'm an idiot for missing it somehow but is there an option for watching the movies in H? Or does the player automatically run the film in a certain quality after assessing your speed?
If the latter is true can you guys share what kind of internet speed you're running for HD? I'm getting a bit annoyed at the low quality. And I'm at about 17 Mbps.

The quality is dynamic in that it adjusts itself based on your connection speed. Like if I'm watching something it could be in HD, but if I start dickin' around on the internet at the same time it'd knock me down a bar or two, then back up if I stopped using the connection in other ways. And 17? Really? Are you using a wireless adapter or something? I have my XBOX tethered to my modem and unless I'm mistaken it's a solid 100 Mbps and that's just basic cable modem.
100 Mbps? Holy shit, man, I thought that was near the limit of what's even available in the US. My basic modem provides speeds that are at about the middle of what my provider offers.
Does Netflix offer some indication that what's streaming is HD? Or can you just tell by looking at it?
If you're watching it on a set top device, it has a little icon to let you know it's in HD.
Are those devices worth it? I'll be using the Wii in the future, but that won't be HD, and I have no plans to get a PS3.
Mine's inside the blu-ray player, and it's changed everything. I can't get into watching a movie on my computer.

Well, I just upgraded to a cable 16 Mbps connection from dsl last week, and I've had no problem streaming HD to my PS3 with my wireless router. One time it started an HD movie in SD, but all I had to do was stop the movie and restart it and it bumped up to HD. Also, please keep in mind that not all content is available in HD.

EDIT:

Well maybe I'm wrong about the number, but I know my wireless connects at 54Mbps and when I tether it's significantly faster. But there's honestly every chance I'm completely talking out of my ass.

I don't think I enjoy anything more on these forums than seeing Jake deliver a two word zinger with that avatar.
Meh, I love me some Jeremy.
Love you too, Pookie.

And just to squash this derail once and for all: Am I reading this right?
... as if I didn't hate my internet bad enough already. Goddamnit, I'm being fucked.
Apparently, I'm as lucky as Jeremy...
On topic, I just watched THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE and because Rath's thread piqued my interest, BUNNY LAKE IS MISSING. Both great films.

I've got both of those in my queue, just haven't made myself pull the trigger on em yet. May make those the next ones I watch.

Has Phantom of the Opera (1925) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) been available for long? I noticed them on there last week along with quite a few other Lon Chaney Sr films.
I already watched Bunny Lake because of Rath. And it's freakin' great. I second the recommendation.
I think I might have to do the same thing.

And while I'm making recommendations, Butler and I both watched What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? on Sunday, and have been going on about it ever since. It's a must see, and it's on Instant in HD. Bette Davis gives one of the creepiest performances of all time. She's terrifying.

Green for Danger, 49th Parallel and a few others.

Love how the Archers are almost completely represented on Instant View. I didn't check to see if the older flicks got pulled off the service yet.

ALSO! Brief Interviews with Hideous Men is now on Instant View. I believe this is an early bow before the March DVD release.
Medium Cool is available to watch...dvd is OOP..Great film

You weren't so "meh" on titties in the Christina Hendricks derail thread.

Jeremy < titties

Got it.

If I had to guess, I'd say that 54Mbps is the peak rate on your wireless network. If you were to report your actual transfer speeds, they'd be much, much lower. Unless, of course, you're connected directly into Colossus: The Forbin Project or something.

How'd you know???

In other news - they also added FROM BEYOND in amongst the new Criterion flicks.
Weird, I was just watching that dvd last night. I love that damn movie so much.

Alex, did you ever get around to it?
OH and they also added SCANNERS, though admittedly that may only be a big deal to me because I, um...haven't seen it yet.
It's a lesser work but lots of fun. Howard Shore's score is pretty big and operatic. Which, when played against scenes of dreary Ontario, just screams CRONENBERG

Lovely. Definitely gonna do my best to pull a double of both of these tonight.
Been loving my Netflix streaming as of late. Just watched Caddyshack last night for the first time in over ten years. Also working my way through Legend of the Seeker which looks great in HD.

Cop and a Half. Directed by Fonzie and starring the Bandit.

I'd put it just below The Room and House of the Dead as one of the best terrible movies I've ever seen.

One of Siskel and Ebert's biggest disagreements.

I love that exchange. Ebert looks pained to be giving it, and then Siskel's reaction is priceless (you just gave them a big Christmas gift, Santa!) which forces Ebert to act all defensive (YOU DIDN'T LIKE THIS MOVIE) which prompts Siskel to make buy eyes at him. Classic.

That Cop and a Half kid is a comedy genius.

On Netflix Instant View as of last night: MERC FORCE.

Holy shit. Until Severin releases BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND TERROR this will more than suffice. Truly astonishing.
DePalma's Obsession.

His most underrated? I say, yes. Brilliant ending.
Flame and Citron is available. I heard good reviews for this, and am interested in seeing it.

I havent seen a Von Trier movie yet. Should I go balls-in on Antichrist, or try something else of his first?

Antrichrist is like no other movie von Trier has done, so it wouldn't make a great entry into his filmography if for the simple reason that it doesn't exactly give you a great idea of the type of film maker he is.

That said, it's fascinating and it's somewhat more of a commercial movie then a lot his other work (it is a horror movie, after all) so you might as well check it out. It's not like there is any real easy entry into von Trier's work.

Nor is there a movie you should watch beforehand which will warm you up for Antichrist, really.

How do you all know these upcoming dates for instant? I can't find anything on instantwatcher. Usually, the most notice I'll get is the "Coming Soon" text if something's in my DVD queue already.
