President Obama's first ever State of the Union

This Wednesday.

Be there or be squared.

I am pretty excited. Plus, frankly, after recent events in the Supreme Court and the election of Scott Brown, I am looking for some guidiance from my Commander in Cheif.

PS: Anyone want to place bets on the odds of another Joe Wilson type racially motivated outburst during the speech? I seriously think it might happen. The Repubs are really unhinged these days, and the election of Brown might make them feel puffed up and important enough to disrespect the President on live TV again. After all, he's black, so you don't need to respect the man or the office (obvious sarcasm)

"The state of the union....is STRONG!"

Funny! (it made me chuckle)

But in all seriousness, I'm looking to hear from my President about the State of the Union, cause right now I'm feeling a little down on the whole American Experiment

I think in some ways, it's going to be the most important speech yet of his Presidency

It's going to be difficult to pull myself away from Mass Effect 2 for a couple hours to watch this. I believe I can find the strength to do so.

I'm so glad they moved it a week earlier so it wouldn't interrupt Lost.

If my controller is working by that time, I think I'll be in the same boat.

But it should be an hour at most, unless you're a junkie like me who watches the post game (though with ME2 I might skip that time time 'round)

Oh interesting I didn't know they did that
post #8 of 236
Yeah, I'm really happy they're not doing it during LOST anymore. That would not have been good at all.

I'm looking forward to the speech though. People are probably more critical of Obama right now then at any other point in his time as a public figure. I can't wait to see how he responds.
The funny thing is that it wasn't going to be during Lost actually. It would just be the hour immediately before. So if it were late for whatever reason it would have overlapped with Lost.

The speech itself generally goes just under an hour (except for Bill Clinton's SOTU speeches, which sometimes flirted with 90 minutes). There's the pomp of watching the president walk in, then walk out giving high fives, fist bumps, and secret Skull & Bones' handshakes along the way. Then there's the opposition response and the post-game analysis all the networks would do. I know which one is more important, but this thing would have bumped Lost for sure.

Is anyone even in a union anymore?

Oh...

Has there ever been anything good announced at a state of the union? From Bush starting the anti-gay marriage campaign in 2004 and the Yellow Cake bullshit in 2003. My biggest memory of a state of the union is when Clinton was doing his typical boring one right in the middle of the OJ civil trial verdict.

HuffPost is reporting that part of the speech will deal with Don't Ask Don't Tell.

Given that they just basically handed the electoral strategy of the DNC, DSCC, DCCC, and DGA to Plouffe in a desperate bid to keep the spirit of 2008 alive, I predict that this speech is going to be his bid to woo back the base. However, as long as Rahm Emmanuel is still on his staff, I would receive those kinds of gestures to the base with a healthy dose of cynicism.

Tonight's the big night. Excitement!

I just went to the grocery store and stocked up on a few Obama-Prime-Time-Speech essentials:

1) Honest Tea, the President's favorite kind of tea. I even got his one of his favorite flavors (even though I don't like how it tastes), Black Forest Berry. HONEST TEA is now stocked in all WH fridges

(A photo of the President's two favorite varieties of Honest Tea)
2) Victory Chips. On the night of the 2006 victories in the midterm election, I purchased a bag of snack mix from the alcohol emporium. They were terrible, but when it came time for the night of the Iowa Caucuses on Jan 3 2008, I purchased another bag. What if the "Victory Chips" were somehow responsible for the outcome of the 2006 election? Could I afford NOT to buy them?

V FOR VICTORY CHIPS

No.

And so every day of the Primary, or the night of his DNC speech, or the debates, and finally on election night 2008* I purchased and ate these horrid snacks.

But there is a problem... They are no longer sold around here! I've looked everywhere and still no luck. I'm a deeply superstitious person, and the disappearance of Victory Chips greatly troubled me. What did it spell for the future of the Obama Presidency?

I now buy Utz brand snack mix, which is similar, and I hope that the gods of Karma don't notice the difference.

Imitation "Victory Chips"

I get off at 8 30 tonight, and I'm racing straight home so I don't miss "Madame Speaker... the President of the United States!"

I love watching him high five everyone

I'll need to hurry to set up my HDTV downstairs though, right now it's up in my room where I don't get cable. Whenever Obama gives a prime time speech, I watch it on my HDTV so I can see him in all his HD glory. I find NBC generally has the best color and picture, IMHO

As for the content of the speech... We'll see how it goes. I have my hopes up, but I am realistic.

I feel that in many ways, this is the most important speech he has yet made as President (except perhaps the one he did in Cairo back in June)

Axelrod says Obama will call for the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell tonight.

Good to know Mark Indelicato will have career options now that he's unemployed.

Also, he will announce high speed rail spending, either at the SOTU or right after. That's fantastic.

How many times have the Right stood up to applause? I've counted three times, which I feel is almost A LOT considering who's speaking.

Not a surprise since it's one of his strengths, but Obama is killing this. His speech about how other countries aren't waiting for the progress is dead on. Let's hope people take it seriously.

LOL at Biden's wink to the Right after the "overwhelming evidence" remark.

ETA: Also, Obama's sideways glance everytime he says something he thinks Repubs will like.
