Music stuff you just discovered

That band who sings 'Ballroom Blitz' is the same band who sings 'Little Willy'. And don't laugh at me, but for awhile, I thought 'Ballroom Blitz' was a really early Meat Loaf tune. Also, heard The Sweet's 'Wig-Wam Bam' for the first time today. Glamalicious.

Personal fave by the Sweet is "Fox on the Run".

People at my job back in HS (lo these 20 years hence) thought "Ballroom Blitz" was Cheap Trick.

Sweet is absolutely awesome. In addition to "Fox on the Run" (which is one of my all time favorite songs), "Block Buster" is pretty great, and formed the basis for The Timelords' "Doctorin' the TARDIS".

One of my great jukebox hero moves is to start with "Fox on the Run" leading into "20th Century Fox" into "20th Century Boy."

Is it just me or does the main riff and beat in 'Blockbuster' sound like Bowie's 'The Jean Genie'?

Yeah, it does. I don't think Sweet are particularly revered for their originality.

Fun fact: the roots of Sweet begin when Brian Connolly joined the band Wainwright's Gentlemen with drummer Mick Tucker. Connolly replaced Ian Gillian.

"Jean Genie" was released in November 1972, "Block Buster" in January 1973. According to Wikipedia, both sides maintain that the similarity is just a coincidence.

And it's not a riff of such startling originality or complexity that it would be hard to imagine more than one person coming up with it. Hell, Marc Bolan's got a few that are virtually identical, too.

(Mind you, I love both songs-- a great riff's a great riff, no matter how many times you hear it).

As if I wasn't utterly in love with Mary Alice from Ace of Cakes already, I find out just now her brother is Neil Fallon, singer for Clutch.

Duff is pretty embedded in the Baltimore Music scene actually, it's how he found a lot of his employees. He plays bass in a sort of post rock band called soihadto, that's pretty decent.

Chip Taylor, who is fast becoming one of my favourite songwriters*, wrote both "Wild Thing" and "Angel of the Morning".

*Check out New Songs of Freedom. "Dance with a Hole In Your Shoe" is really great.

He's also Jon Voight's brother.
