April's Philadelphia Film Festival cancelled

(Okay, Technically it is Cinefest being run by TLA)

I saw 500 Days of Summer, Hurt Locker, Brothers Grimm, and Moon all at the festival last year. In The past 6 years I've seen Hard Candy, The Proposition, Mysterious Skin, Layer Cake, and other great indies at the festival.

There will be still be the Fall Festival which is called the Philadelphia Film Festival being run by the the Philadelphia Film Society

CineFest canceled

The Philadelphia Cinema Alliance announced yesterday that the April 8-19 Philadelphia CineFest has been canceled.

PCA Development Director Thom Cardwell says that the festival will return in 2011 and that a lack of sponsorship made "the fiscal planning of the event too daunting."

CineFest debuted last spring under the helm of TLA Video owner Ray Murray, artistic director of the Philadelphia Film Festival for nine years, after he and J. Andrew Greenblatt, executive director of the Philadelphia Film Society, had a falling out, leading to Greenblatt's camp's staging the PFF in September.

"As the original organization responsible for bringing the beauty and depth of film to the masses in Philadelphia, we are confident in our ability to produce a movie festival in 2011 that honors this tradition," Murray said.

And the fall festival will be a fucking drag because no one wants their film to premiere at the Philadelphia Film Festival. Look forward to paying $10 to watch a DVD with 2.0 sound being shoddily projected onto a movie screen.

And now I have friends wondering if their film submission fees are to be refunded. Ha ha.

What a sad bit of news. Sundance got me all riled up and I was hoping some of those movies would hit the Philly CineFest. Last year was my first one and I saw my favorite movie of last year there, It's Not Me I Swear!

Really sad news.

This is because TLA is going under. Their video stores are closing (hell I am surprised their stores lasted past 2005-2006. You don't see Movies Unlimited around anymore.)

Are there any good festivals in DC or Baltimore around the Spring?

I was introduced to directors and actors like JGL, Kirby Dick, John Hillcoat, Ellen Page, and Ramin Bahrani all at the festival

Well, this is crushing news. The spring film fest is basically my favorite thing that happens all year. Also my parents were planning to come up for it, they already have their hotel booked and everything. They are going to be so disappointed.

But I just googled it and found this so I guess there's still hope for a festival in the spring

The film society likes to send out announcement emails about screenings like two hours before the screening. I won't hold my breath yet.

Oh, and they just sent me an email announcing a screening of a fucking Burning Man doc. Like a chicken without a head.

I went to a PFS screening tonight and one of the PFS people said to expect some big announcements about a spring festival!

He said it won't be anywhere near as big as Cinefest, but at least it's something!

That's promising, I really hope they pull it off. Thanks for the news!

Here's what we're getting: http://www.philly.com/inquirer/magazine/84090357.html

A free 3 day "preview" of the fall festival. I guess almost nothing is still better than total nothing, and it is free, but I can't say this does much to diminish my disappointment over TLA's cancellation.

Sweet. But, 3 days ALL at the Prince and free? That's going to be fucking chaos.

I can foresee myself being really pissed because 2 movies I really want to see will play back to back and I won't be able to get in line in time for the second one.

Luckily I'm a PFS member and get first dibs on tix.
