Franklyn

It's the sort of film that I was hoping I'd be able to take something from, because it seems quite ambitious, but the film is a mess throughout its entire length. I have no idea how this film was ever made, maybe a producer of it was very desperate to try and make another great science fiction movie, but this isn't it. The entire thing is desperate and pointless. Worse, it's a mystery for no reason, hiding details from the viewer for no good reason, even by obviously tilting the camera in a direction to obfuscate what you're trying to see. What a fucking waste of time. Anyone else watch this tripe? I remember it was covered here a while back, until somebody writing for the site was able to see it (those trailers did seem intriguing).

Ugh, just...ugh. Eva Green isn't naked, either, though she does audition to be the next Helena Bonham Carter, with a nearly disturbing likeness to Carter's Tim Burton roles (and the Fight Club one as Marla as well).

No I haven't seen it yet but I saw the trailer and thought it looked interesting. But answer one question please: Is it a fantasy story a character is telling or some kind of dream? Meaning if I watch it are the events actually happening. From the trailer......im suspicious.

EDIT: It's actually available through Netflix streaming if anyone wants that option. Im reading the reviews and they seem positive enough. I can't stand the streaming though, might add the blu-ray to the list depending.

The question you're asking would spoil the movie if answered...but it's so dumb that the mystery isn't worthwhile...the dystopic city looks different than anywhere today, and its inhabitants are forced to be religious, but I don't know why because it seems to not make any sense...most people in today's world are already superstitious, so why bother making this world at all...ah, if you're curious, see it as I did. But the plot is a tangled web that ultimately signifies nothing.

Yea I had the unfortunate luck of watching it. The trailer tricked me, and I watched it in the theaters. And like you say its an absolute mess. The plot was extremely ill concieved. The movie was bad enough, but the twist just descends it even further. Its the worst case of pulling wool over the audiences eyes, it actually pissed me off. I don't know how in gods name one could read the script and think it wouldn't be really bad. It never had a chance to be good. The only good thing I can say about it is that it had some interesting production designs.

Bad film, but the religiosity of Meanwhile City is pretty clearly the manifestation of Preest's feelings towards his father. Not that it makes it any more interesting.

I've got a theory that the original film was to take place only in Meanwhile City but when they couldn't get the proper financing the filmmakers added the real world parts and tried to fit them all together.

I have no idea why the stories of the English guy and Eva Green are in this film.

I did like the Meanwhile City scenes and it's a world I would've happily spent two hours in. I really dug the use of paintings for the effects.

It's too bad the rest of the movie is kind of lame, because I thought Phillippe's performance at the end was pretty top-notch.

This movie was fucking awful.

Other than some nice designs for Meanwhile City, not a good movie. It had Ryan Phillipe for one, so that's a big negative out of the gate.

He's earned a lot of goodwill with me because of The Way of the Gun. He's far from a problem in Franklyn considering how much of a mess the film is.

Ryan Phillipe is okay. While it wasn't the best movie in the world, his performance in Stop-Loss might be his best. I also give him some grace for Cruel Intentions and especially The Way of the Gun.

I DVRed this. I think I'll erase it.

Watch the beginning, Meanwhile City looks nice.

Just want to say that Phillipe held his own pretty well in Breach.

I actually liked this. Lots of themes explored: art, revenge, fate, belief (religion and delusion, etc)

Can't say I "got" everything on the first viewing, but I think it's layered and deserves another look. I actually wish it were longer and spent more time in Meanwhile City. Some of the reveals were obvious while others where not. Ambitious and flawed. Been quite awhile since I've seen the trailers, so the only expectations I had were from the dvd cover image. To say the entire thing is pointless, original poster, shows a lack of engagement, and not necessarily a fault of the film's.

Shades of FIGHT CLUB, NEVERWHERE, DARK CITY, V FOR VENDETTA.
