Mad Men - Season 4

It's a long way to go, but we can discuss a few developments along the way.
If you haven't watched season 3 yet, get the fuck out of here.

I just read that Sal is effectively off the show. I thought he was going to come back later on. Fuck that. One of the best characters by far.

I think Sal has to do with Bryan Batt's contract negotiations falling through.

I love the show. I thought it was funny how the last season ended so similar, in a way, to The Office's Michael Scott Paper Company storyline. It also felt like Weiner intends a tonal shift in the series, to be a little more upbeat despite entering darker times for the decade.

Here's hoping we get to see way more Peggy, who is adorable, Roger, who always gets the best lines of any episode, and way more Joan, no explanation needed.

After three seasons of one kind of show, I'd be excited to see Weiner change gears completely. I love the soap-y aspects of the narrative thus far, but they can really take it in so many directions now. I'd love to see them take some chances. I'd love to see season 4 start 4 years later. I'd also love some extended trips back to the 50s, before Hamm is too old to pull it off.

It really sucks that Sal is leaving, but it also makes sense. On one level I'd feel cheated if they found a way to bring him back. Knowing he's not coming back makes the moment his character gets fired all the more tragic and gives the season, the show and the character more gravitas.

He can always turn up again in season 5 or 6; people in the same field have a way of running back into each other. It might even be a better way to mine his character if he tuns up a few years down the timeline a changed man. The 60s might be good for Sal.

I like this idea quite a bit. Sal could end up in a position to put one over on Don and the new crew. Sort of like how people speculated that Harry would be in charge of everything by the end of the series, due to his work in television.

More likely that one of the more predatory guys in the company takes tv away from Harry once Don stops turning his nose up at it.

Oh I agree, with Don and the Old Men out of the picture, I think that possiblity sailed out the window.

They always raved about the incredible office set they created for season 1, and it was showcased to a greater extent in seasons 2 and 3. Do you think we'll see the new firm take over the old one's space, or is that set done and we'll see a completely new one in its place?

I'm hoping for somewhere between three or four year gap between the seasons. It's a shame Sal is gone for good but at least they kept the crew together. I think Don and Betts sharing the kids will lead to an interesting storyline, but I am worried that if the show takes a bigger gap between the seasons that the girl that played Sally Draper would be left behind which would be a shame. She really became the heart of the show last season.

A three to four year gap would certainly be an intriguing way to advance the "story," but I'd actually like to see the immediate fallout over the defections and the process of "rebuilding" the company almost from the ground up. I think a gap would sort of diminish the big payoff we got at the end of Season 3 by getting us right back to business as usual. Sal potentially being gone for good is disappointing, especially if contract negotiations were the culprit. Holding out hope for a return in the not too distant future.

While I enjoyed the drama of the Drapers, I'd be really happy if they stayed separated.

And ditto on the rebuilding of the company. Gives all there characters who've been mired in their personal drama something fresh to work with.

Sepinwall has pointed out that any huge jump will mean they would have to recast Sally, which would be a shame after last season. I'd be fine with them jumping to '66 or '67, which would reset us to where Weiner's original plan for the show to be five seasons with two years between each. I'd like them to take a year before tackling '68. If they choose to slow the pace, then I think seeing the characters' reactions to Beatlemania would be a riot.
