Since when is 'retard' bleepable?

Thread Starter
i was watching Tosh.0 (its a stupid show but its got its moments, its like a meaner version of the soup.) on comedy central the other day. and while tosh was talking comedy central bleeped him for using the word 'retard'!?!

now i know that some people find the word offensive and think it should be bleeped but i disagree its all about context. first off, im against bleeping of any kind. its redundant, brings more attention than the word itself. but i dont want to turn this thread into that boring argument.

anyway. Tosh seemed upset by the bleeping and began repeating the word over and over to prove his point. im just suprised that comedy central of all networks chooses to bleep that word. why is it bleepable? since when? is it the retard lobbyists threatening to sue now?

its not like he was even called anyone retarded. he was referring to something being retarded and got bleeped. i know for a fact that South Park has used that word repeatedly with characters directly calling each other retarded, yet that is not bleeped?

the fact that they can bleep this word now is retarded.

Retards are always bleepable, you just have to catch them when they can't yell for help.

...sorry, I'll leave now.
You know, as a Massachusetts resident I never thought much about it. We call everything retarded around here, even actual retarded people

But I now have a slightly changed opinion.

Last week I was shuffling through the snow and (for no reason) my mom said that I walk "like a retarded person".

1) It was an uncharacteristically rude comment for her to make

2) It was hurtful

In that instance, I would have preferred the word had been beeped.

I bleeped your bleeping bleep bleep bleep.

If she thinks you walk like a retard, she should see you post.
There's a board I go to that has their filters set so high, if you typed "Draper", the "rape" in the middle of the word would be starred out.
I'm so glad a certain bleeping posters posts are bleeped out.

Wow. Sorry for the huge gift. This was directed at the Leper a few posts up.

Obviously that's taking things too far, but I'd be lying if I said that the amount of "rape humor" that occurs online wasn't highly disturbing to me. I do wish that perhaps it was against the TOS of most sites. You could type the word in a discussion if need be, but jokes would not be tolerated.

In my head, I'm totally high-fiving your mom for that.

I've come across a few education related sites with filters.

Apparently, graduating from Georgetown, *** laude is a pretty commendable accomplishment.

Anyone else so old they remember when "retarded" was , briefly, the PC euphemism?

I know that I often say "humorous" things around here, but I was being serious when I said that it was hurtful Mattioli. She said it just to be nasty to me, and I felt really bad.

I brought up that anecdote in the context of a serious discussion of whether or not hte word retard is offensive

For the record, I am for calling retarded people retarded. It's a medical and scientific definition. It's not slang or a slur. I'm not going to call someone "special". Forgive me, but refering to someone as "special" is retarded.

We're all "special", in our own way.

We do not all have IQs below 70

So, everyone in your state, including you, using a word that may be offensive to mentally handicapped people is no big deal, but when your mother directs it at you, it's hurtful?
Retahded? Not in my back yard.

I'm actually of the opposite thinking, It doesn't bother me when people without mental handicaps say it to each other, but the people who call a mental handicapped person Retarded to their face, or use it when describing them in some nasty fashion have as much class as people who still use the word Negro.

You can be mentally handicapped but not retarded. Anyone who is retarded has no reason to be offended if the word is used to describe them. Like I said, it's not a slur or slang when talking about people with an IQ below 70. It's just a medical definition.

With what I just said said though, why would I be nasty about it to a retarded person? If I'm polite to them, then I assume it's ok, yes? I only use the word when talking to non retarded people about retarded people. I don't go up to retarded people and discuss their retardation with them. Who would do that?

What offended me was that my mom MEANT that I looked like a person suffering from mental retardation, not that I looked weird or silly. My mom is not from Massachusetts and she does not use the word Retarded the way a Bay State person would. She meant it as an insult to me.

EDIT: Just to clarify:

I was walking back from the car to the house and I was scuffing my sneakers and making grinding noises on the ice as I walked. My mom told me to stop walking that way and I said "It's just how I walk!" which is what prompted to say what she did.

Sometimes, two wrongs make a right, brad...you could have just triggered the next step in evolution.
Also, i think bleeping retard is totally mentally challenged.

I prefer "Retardo" (its a variation of Explodo), althought its sounds better in spanish.

They'll stop me from saying "retard" when they pry my "Big Lizard in My Backyard" cd out of my cold, dead hands:
Quote:
It's a boring day - I've got nothing to do
Except to get a load of retards and drive em to the zoo
Oh oh oh takin' retards to the zoo (x2)
Load 'em on a bus just for laughs
Down a winding road stepping on the gas
Down a winding road just to stay dreaming
Down a winding road with the retards screaming
Oh oh oh takin' retards to the zoo (x2)
One of them blowing a big spit bubble
Slam on the brakes at the first sign of trouble
Head on collision bodies everywhere
Head on collision retards beware
Oh oh oh takin' retards to the zoo (x2)

149 on a standardized IQ test is pretty low, I would not be bragging about that. 149 on a none standardized test can be pretty high depending on what test you took.

Regarding the IQ thing; its not how many points you have, its how you use them.

I was in 4th grade,a nd the doctor told my parents my score was a point below genius level. I got put in special classes and everything which was socially isolating.

I'm pouring all my points into "warp" and "unity", because I want to be able to bring squad members back with full health

Psst Kate. This is a no-win situation. Back out of the thread. Do not look back. Trust me.

Ooooooh, boy. Oh boy. YOU, are a fucking joke, you know that? You're a grade a fucking moron, and one of the few people ACTUALLY worthy of the title: "retard."

Seriously, go fuck yourself until you shuffle loose from the mortal coil, you awful, awful, inconsiderate, stupid human being. There's better people who need your air/resources.

ETA: I really, really mean that too. Go back and read what you've written. If you're (bullshit) IQ is truly what you say it is, then you should have no problem whatsoever realizing how fucking hypocritical and STUPID it makes you, nitwit.

PS...Kate, with the huge IQ...you DO know 'retard' is just French for 'slow', right?
...and it kinda...just caught on?

Why am I typing like Fleed?

Wow, I hate to contribute actual discussion to this thread, but Louis CK, in his interview on AICN, remarked that the FX censors, the same ones who oversee Always Sunny, let him know that he can't use the word retard in his new show.

You should have replied back, "Hey Mom, you walk like a rude, thoughtless bitch. Let's see if they bleep it out when I go upside your head with a snowball."
Please don't speak for everyone in MA. I've never, ever, felt that calling someone "retarded" was okay, even when I was in grade school.
Apparently "consumer" is a PC version in some places. I kind of like it, but it's slightly retarded when compared to the real thing.
I think it's becoming more and more un-PC now that Sarah Palin has gotten ahold of it. Didn't she just chide some politician for off-handely using the word?
See, I don't have a problem with someone calling a movie "retarded" or something off-handed like that. I'm not big on it, but I've learned to live with it.

But when you cross the line into defending calling actual mentally handicapped people "retarded," you're fucking BEGGING to get popped in the mouth. Or at least have karma rain down on you. Or you're just a worthless sack of asshole. Take your pick.

It's kind of like the "faggot" conundrum. It's a fun word, and funny/appropriate in some circumstances. NEVER, however, is it appropriate to call a gay person a "faggot."

I came to contribute that as well.

I stayed for the chaos caused by Princess Kate.
