I've said this in other threads where certain chief editors get off on using the word so cavalierly, but I would be a hypocrite if I said I've never been guilty of it, however it doesn't make it any less shitty. I try to keep it out of my vocabulary, and I think people who dismiss it as "no big deal" need to think a little harder. Using a racial slur when the race you may be offending isn't around doesn't make it any better. The same theory applies here, and just because that used to be the appropriate phrase (it's not anymore, just like "Negro" and "Colored" are now inappropriate) doesn't mean it's not a dick move to keep using it.

Bringing things back a little off-tangent and back on-topic, I remember when MTV originally aired the video for System of a Down's "Sugar" they censored a whole raft of words in it, some understandable, and others totally ludicrous.

The one that stood out the most was the blanking of "gun" in the line "I got a gun the other day..." That one completely baffled me. It wasn't a possible casualty of being connected to an actual curse (like "kick her" maybe got taken out due to how close it was to "fuckin'"), it was blipped out on its own. So what, was the mention of getting a gun too indicative of potential gun violence? I never understood that.

"ADD" is the new retard, usually for lazy writers who want to put down movies they don't like or the audiences who watch them... but don't want to get bleeped or in trouble in some way. Not too surprisingly, it's usually someone who has no real understanding about attention deficit disorder.

Ah, to have had an inhaler in elementary, how cool I would have been. As a school teacher, ADD is on its way out. Autism is in baby! Every low functioning student is tested for autism and Aspergers. We now have a special autism classroom in our special education department. ADD kids are there, but their lunch money is being stolen by the autistic kids.

Gah, I hate that autism is an "in" thing in elementary schools. My sister is convinced her son is Autistic, because the school recommended testing him for it. Why? Because he doesn't listen to adults when it doesn't suit him, he fights with the other kids and generally acts like an unaccountable little shit. Outside of that though, he's curious in the world around him, is super active, takes stuff apart to see how things work, and studies them. I've got at least two blood relatives who ARE autistic, and he displays none of their traits. But since he's unmanageable, they asked he be tested. Rather than get his little butt in line through some good old tough love, they'd rather just medicate him.

I don't have the heart to tell her it's more likely that she's a crappy parent and doesn't discipline the child, letting him get away with everything and making concessions on little things ("Clean your room!" "No!" "At least pick up the clothes!" He's SIX.) But the school requested the test, so now it's in her head that there's something wrong with her little angel! Infuriates me to no end.

You know, you're kidding, but when I was growing up it WAS kind of cool to have asthma (at least to the kids who did not have it). Back then, only a few people in every grade had it.

The teachers always would give us angry stern lectures about how we should NEVER play with the other student's inhalers. How we were NEVER allowed to breath from them. This had the effect of making inhalers mysterious and cool. I never did, but plenty of kids I know tried it once or twice. This can be directly attributed to the warnings, I'd imagine

What Timothy is trying to say, is that while historically the use of the word retarded to refer to the "mentally challenged" or "mentally disabled" might have been socially acceptable it's use today has been co-opted for derogatory slang. The more, sigh, politically correct term would be "mentally challenged," "mentally disabled" or even "developmentally delayed."

I prefer "special in the head" but that's just me.

Plus, as my final word on the subject, something occurred to me while I was recovering from illness over the weekend:

The people who are really offended by "retard" are the parents and relatives of the "mentally challenged". They're the ones who have to deal with feelings of shame, guilt, whatever ETC, from having family members in that tragic condition.

I'd be seriously surprised to hear someone who is truly "special" cares one way or the other what they are called. I mean, I went to school (another issue entirely, I'll get into this some other time but going to school with those people was one of the most frustrating experiences of my life. *) with some mentally challenged people, and they did not know how to hold a pencil, much less what "retard" meant or whether or not they should be offended by it.


*To explain:

1) The retarded are entitled to an education. It's their right
2) Putting them in public schools however is something for the mental comfort of their familes, and not for the kid themselves
3) I had to sit in classrooms watching these people have their tests FILLED OUT FOR THEM by their "aides" (who cost the school district untold amounts of money). They would then receive an "A" for the test that someone else answered for them.
