Although I prefer Dante to Landis, American Werewolf In London is tons better than The Howling.

I think we have some overseas bias here...

You really can't compare The Howling to An American Werewolf in London. Two totally different spins on the genre. I loved the werewolves in the Howling. The werewolves in Dogs Soldiers were totally inspired by this movie.

I'm a HUGE Dante fan. Anybody own the new Gremlins DVDs? On the commentarys Dante points out all of the refs to the howling that he put in those movies, including a movie theater showing "The Howling 11" Anyway, I haven't seen any of the sequels to the howling but Dante says that when he met Christopher Lee the first thing Lee did was apologize for doing "The Howling 2".

There's a great production still I saw in Fangoria, where Dante is giving direction to Dee Wallace Stone, who is in a hot tub. Above and behind her, outside the tub, is Slim Pickens getting an eyefull.

HA! that "hot tub" scene didn't even make it in the movie either...

I believe that scene was on the SE laserdisc, and is supposedly going to be on the upcoming SE DVD.

UPCOMING SP DVD?! Damn, I just wasted ten bucks. Anybody got any news on this?
I don't think it's concrete yet, just a very strong rumor that's been reported at a bunch of different DVD news sites IIRC.
The commentary and all that was recorded months and months ago. It's just a matter of when they're going to put it out.
There's an entry on imdb for a 50 minute documentary called Unleashing The Beast: The Making of the Howling or something similar, noted as being from 2003. No Rob Bottin though

Jack, are they using the Image commentary, or did they record a new one?

Here it is.

A ok flick.
Of the two werewolf flicks to come out that year(The Howling and An American Werewolf in London), THE HOWLING is the superior animal. Much faster moving story, a boatload of intresting characters played by some of the best character actors in the business, and werewolves that look more like what people expect when they think werewolves. AWIL does have a slightly better tranformation sequence, but its wasted when all we get is just a big dog. The only other descent flick with a werewolf to come out in the 80's had to be the Wolf-Man as portrayed in the underrated gem, THE MONSTER SQUAD , as designed by Stan Winston.

Also on the special edition DVD , the commetary track will be lifted fom the laserdisc accrding to Joe Dante. He said the reason behind him using that was the actor who played Dee Wallace's husband, Chris Stone, who does the commentary along with Dante on the laserdisc, died a few years back of a heart attack, and he thought it was wierd to do a new commentary without him.

Christopher Stone was married to Dee Wallace in real life as well (hence Dee Wallace-Stone). I'm sure Dee would have felt uncomfortable doing the commentary without him too.

(edited to fix a sentence)

I was kidding. There are no hilarious consequences to me confusing Jason Bateman with Patrick Bateman. There are only tragic, speech-making-at-Hogan-Family-appreciation-society related consequences.
