In this episode, Ed explains his absence due to dental surgery and how he passed the time watching a bunch of different movies. He also gets himself into either his greatest or worst job interview ever while Randall recoils in shock and horror. The two also discuss The Social Network and Justin Bieber's latest attempt at enraging the internet while Ed eats at Chik-Fil-A, discovers Paul Sorvino's pasta sauce, and watches Max Headroom. Because it's been too damn long:


Ed and Randall recover from their exploits in participating in a trivial night the night before. As the two sober up, Ed presents his thoughts on The Social Network, generic beer, and his ideas on a "BDR Movie". Then, Ed gets into a discussion of all things related to Halloween, including costumes, candy, Treehouse of Horror, and Randall's adventures in the hills of Los Angeles. Eventually, the conversation always goes down the same route it always does: Ed's devotion to Doctor Who and why no one understands it.

It's been way too long...again

The Ed Hocken Show is back and has perhaps its greatest guest yet. Fellow associate of the BDR boards and aspiring comedian, Jake Scherzer, stops by to chat with Ed about the process and nature of doing stand up comedy. From discussions about favorite comedians, techniques, styles, and an appreciation of Louis C.K., Jake and Ed really try to get to the nature of comedy. The two touch on Observe and Report, fat Val Kilmer, Dave Chappelle, moving, and life in Texas

Fun chat gents. A heap of good topics covered. I didn't pay a lot of attention to what goes on behind the scenes of stand up comedy until I started listening to podcasts, and specifically SoCal's The Sound of Young America and NYC's KATG, in 2005. Over the last year or so WTF has gone even further into the depths of the world of comics than KATG and it fascinates me no end.

And speaking of Jake's voice, your tutor wasn't kidding when she said you talk fast dude. I always assumed all Texas folks had a fairly laid back way of talking, but you get through the words at a rate of knots. It's really fucking cool what you're doing too and I relate to that "I want to do something that terrifies me" drive, especially after a relationship break up. In my case it was heading into the Amazon for six months and living with people who spoke no English, and to be honest, even as an arachnophobe, I'd rather go back with the tarantulas and anacondas than get up on stage with nothing but a mic to try and make people laugh.

I hope you guys have a few more chats in future too because it'd be a really cool way to track the experiences of a brand new comic as he walks his path in a world which is much less documented than that of musicians and filmmakers.

According to IMDB yes, it was also apparently a spin off of Head of the Class, which is a show I don't even remember. I just remember looking forward to it until I saw it, and it being completely terrible.

Ed has his first international guest brought over by the miracle of Skype. All the way from Northern Ireland, Ed is joined by Back Talk co-host Ian Pratt. Ed, while channeling his inner Marc Maron, talks with Ian about British crime shows, the World Cup announcements, dealing with the ever increasing "look at me" factor related to social media, traveling the world, religion, influences in music, and Ed's continued "fascination" with Johnny Simmons.

Not a reflection on you, Ed, and I don't listen to enough podcasts to know if this is already a thing, or some revolutionary shit I just thought up: does anyone ever post the location of any given topics in the timeline? I was looking at your list above and thinking it would be cool to have some kind of timeline index in order to listen to a specific topic within the podcast.

Yeah, it happens from time-to-time, Phil. Firewall and Iceberg, the podcast run by Hit Fix.com tv critics Alan Sepinwall (the Best TV Critic in America) and Dan Fienberg, do it on their website's page. I know Criterion Cast does it as well. Ditto Slashfilm, though I rarely listen.

I've only come across posting the times of topics when it relates to spoilers and in those cases it'll read "MAJOR SPOILERS 15:00-18:00".

I could look into listing of the topic times but that would only be useful if the show was far more structured in that we had specific segements and never went back to them. It would be more difficult in my view to do that in a more free-flowing conversation.

Rath's right, you'd see that with say Slashfilm, but you wouldn't necessarily see it with say Marc Maron.

Also, I promise to put in a "Lighten Up" policy for next year's episodes.

Ed and Randall talk about their two favorite things outside of porn and laserdiscs: movies and comics. Randall offers his analysis on the recent castings in Superman, The Dark Knight Rises, and Spiderman. While Ed tells the story of being able to watch William Friedkin's Sorcerer and The Edgar Wright Film Festival over at the New Beverly. The two reflect on the closing of Wizard and Toyfare and offer their thoughts on the latest developments of James Bond.

Plus, the two get into a debate of jet packs vs. nanobots, super strength vs. flight, why Manhunter owns and why prequels don't work. Finally, the two answer some questions from the boards and wacky hi-jinx ensue.
