No Sha Ka Ree. How disappointing.

Those pictures are incredible. Thanks for posting.

Funny, I always thought Earth was the center of the galaxy (not really). Awesome photos.

Every time I see pictures like these I end up half elated and half depressed. They're so beautiful, yet I can't help but wonder if human eyes will ever see these objects first hand.

Nope. If there's a bright center to the universe, you're on the planet that it's farthest from.

Not without some pretty serious radiation protection. It's a hot zone.

props to you, that's a good one.

What does god need with a starship?

One day maybe humans will see these sites first hand. Sadly it'll be a very long time.

I know. Hence my not really comment. One likes to think that they are the center of the galaxy though......

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain."

Surely all these stars are already dead, or dying, as it takes so long for the light to reach us.

You are correct. We are seeing fossil light. It's mind boggling to theorize what these places look like now.

I thought it was just some guy trying to sell me a timeshare.

This image provided by NASA shows a mystery object that was discovered on Jan 6 by the LINEAR sky survey. NASA's Hubble Space Telescope was used to take a closer look. It shows a bizarre X-pattern of filamentary structures near the point-like nucleus...

I'm thinking of that movie, Lifeforce.

It looks like Galactus trying to eat a planet.

If Mathilda May is on board (circa 1985), I for one welcome our naked, soul-sucking overlords...

Looks like Porkin's ghost.

It's just a little crack in the ether. Nothing to worry about I'm sure.

I'm fairly certain that's a picture of an asteroid collision. I saw a story earlier this week about Hubble getting photos of one and that first picture was in the article.

Probably not much different. The Milky Way is about 100,000 light years across. The average star lives tens of billions of years. Add to that the fact that just as many stars are still being created as are dying and it's likely your eyes wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
