Shinjuku Incident

So I just learned that a couple of AMC theaters in my area has Jackie Chan in The Shinjuku Incident showing. So what's the story behind this? Other than the title, I know nothing about it and it just kinda popped up. I never thought it would actually be in theaters.

Start with one of the worst trailers ever made.

I heard it's the first "serious" Chan movie. No goofing around, no "funny" fights.

My understanding is that it is a serious-minded film from actual director Derek Yee, of VIVA EROTICA and C'EST LA VIE, MON CHERI - so already it's more interesting than usual for Jackie, who usually works with mediocre-at-best directors like Stanley Tong or Benny Chan*. This willingness to work with more interesting directors is IMHO a long overdue move on his part. The forthcoming LITTLE BIG SOLDIER looks good as well - working with new Mainland director Ding Sheng.

The US trailer for SHINJUKU seen above is a thing of absolute horror and I refuse to link directly to it. Here's the real trailer and here's where it's now playing in the US.

*Benny Chan actually isn't bad when directing projects that don't in any way involve Jackie Chan, such as BIG BULLET. But something about having Jackie on board as star or producer tends to get lousy results out of him.

Wasn't Che Kirk Wong's collaboration with Jackie a more series affair as well? Can't remember the title off the top of my head at the moment. It was one I'd rented when I was younger, but couldn't get into because it felt so serious from what I was expecting.

EDIT: CRIME STORY!!! ... right?

Yep, that's the one.

New Police Story was kind of a serious effort for Jackie, it wasn't exactly knockabout.

But then it wasn't exactly good either.

At least not when things weren't exploding or bodies weren't in direct peril.

LoveHKFilm's review. I trust Kozo and I'm usually in agreement with him:

That is a generous assessment of Benny Fucking Chan's NEW POLICE STORY. For all the hype about it being a "more serious" Jackie Chan movie, it's all kinds of goofy and Jackie's work in it pales in comparison to what he did in Kirk Wong's CRIME STORY or Sammo Hung's HEART OF DRAGON.
