Battle of the Law & Order Special Guest Stars

Best, favorite, most ridiculous, most obvious aping of a celebrity...go.

My favorite in recent memory has to be Stephen Colbert as a murderous forger on Criminal Intent. This also falls into the "ridiculous" category, but at least Colbert is trying to act, as opposed to playing Stephen Colbert.

The gold standard for "ripped from the headlines" remains Gary Busey as fake Robert Blake, but I also enjoyed (from Criminal Intent) the Anna Nicole Smith episode, with David Cross as her greedy husband. I was quite disappointed in the CI take on Ted Haggard, with Tom Arnold. Arnold had one expression throughout: "oh shit."

Finally, from Criminal Intent, I have to throw some love to NPH as the guy who drilled holes in women's skulls to make them behave, and to John Glover as Goren's mentor. I love how on his first appearance, he does the "Goren crane."

Chevy Chase playing "What if it was me instead of Mel Gibson?" was fantastic.

They did one ala Michael Jackson except it was a comedian and he was white but other than that it was all pedophile, all the time.

If it's the SVU I'm thinking of, he wasn't a comedian. He was a toy store magnate, and it was one of those "the killer got away!" episodes.

It was a regular CSI. I think before Orbach died. It even had a scene of the guy holding his own kid out from a balcony over a screaming crowd.

They repeat stories a lot. I think SVU or the Mothership also did Ted Haggard.

Jeffrey Tambor as Judge Seidlin-lite comes to mind from the flagship.

Soprano's very own Dominic Chianese would often show up as the kind of judge who would throw the book at Uncle Junior.

How about Orbach and Merkerson who were both guest stars before they became regulars.

I don't watch the show that often, but I liked the one episode of SVU (i think) that had Robin Williams as the main villain. He was a "killer that got away!" in the end.

There was a Mike Logan CI episode that guest starred Ethan Embrey and Brad Renfro that was pretty brutal. Not mega-wattage guest stars, but those two were bastardly, and made for good Leopold and Loeb surrogates(and believeable as brothers, too).

Another low wattage guest star, Jim True-Frost(Prez from The Wire)played a good amalagram of Bill Gates and ID Software superstar John Romero from an earrrrly episode of CI that I enjoyed.

That was a pretty good episode.

Ditto Sisto.

My favorite recent one is Cynthia Nixon as the CRAZY WOMAN WITH MANY MULTIPLE PERSONALITIES. Only, not really, it's all an elaborate act to get her found not guilty. But they turn it against her by trying her sister (who conspired with her to kill the Victim-of-the-Week). That was kind of awesome.
Randomly, I was at a restaurant, and the mothership started on the huge TV there. LO AND BEHOLD. Guest Starring...Ernie Hudson.

And his guest spot as a defense lawyer came just a handful of months before he joined the cast as Detective Lupo.

While not a big time a-list celebrity. The big reason why they have a lot of comics try to act dramatic is because Larry Miller did it so well they used made him a suspect twice (episodes Coma and Encore).

Coma is just one of the all time best L&O episodes period.

The Estella Warren/Lynda Carter crossover with (I think) Homicide was pretty good, except they only ever show the second part (the Law & Order part) and never show them back-to-back.

You don't get a better special guest star than Matthew Modine in SVU's "Rage." It's easily one of the best episodes of the entire series and Modine and Meloni have great chemistry.

Yeah, Modine on SVU was great, if only because it was one of the rare episodes to really get inside Stabler's psyche. The whole "I'd be you" exchange sums up that character in a lot of ways.

I was a huge fan of Robin Williams on SVU. He was one of the closest things to a supervillain that the show got, and I wish they'd bring him back in some capacity.

I think the Estella Warren/Lynda Carter episode (that's the one where she steals the sperm of Mark McGrath and Bobby Flay, right?) was a cross-over with the mothership, not Homicide. That was a few years back, and Homicide went off the air in the early 00s.

We're all L&O nuts. So I guess nobody's mentioned Julia Roberts' appearance in the 200th episode of the flagship for a reason. As I recall, she did suck and stuck out in that episode as a femme fatale seducing Curtis.

Will Arnett as travel agent for men traveling to Asia to have sex with boys (oh he was a pedophile too) on SVU.

Also Darrell Hammond as a ultra douchey Wall Street broker on CI may have destroyed any chance of him getting a serious acting gig. It was one of the worst television acting performances I ever seen by a known actor.

Matthew Modine was great on his episode of SVU.

I also liked Martin Short as a hypnotist on SVU.

It is - my wife confirmed tonight that the first episode was SVU, and the second episode is the mothership. The scene at the end of Carter selling out Warren was priceless and a great close to the two episodes.

There was an episode of SVU that I enjoyed involving Fred Savage in full out creepy sleaze mode. It was like the teacher sexual harassment episode of Boy Meets World but rapey!
