The Marx Brothers or The Three Stooges? - Page 2

I have never been a fan of the Stooges, I only ever seem to like other things that riff on it (such as South Park) but I am a Marx fan for life. Each personality serves a very specific comedic function, there's no dead wood in the group, including Zeppo. And there will never be a man funnier than Groucho, for me, he turned the one liner into art.

The Marx Brothers. I don't think it's a fair comparison. The Stooges might be funny but God the Marxes were fucking brilliant. It might be tedious for people like me to keep repeating that Duck Soup is one of the funniest films ever made, but it bloody is.

Salvador Dali really wanted to work with them.
Hell, his introduction in Duck Soup has him singing about how he's going to just utterly destroy whatever is left of the country, for no reason.

"If think this country's bad off now, just wait 'till I get through with it..."

And yeah, Marx bros. by a mile (and I like the Stooges).

Groucho and Chico's repartee is a highlight, for sure. As was the physical comedy. But Harpo was, to me, the cinematic weapon of mass destruction. Everything with him was visual, and he pulled it off with such aplomb. Even his harp scenes...particularly in "Go West", I believe. They are character elements, yeah. But look at them. He turns into a damned fine musician in front of your very eyes. As a boy I was fascinated by that. Still find it a striking element of their films.

Plus, he had a flamethrower in his coat in one flick. How can you not love that?

You'll appreciate the Stooges after seeing the Ritz Brothers.

Or the Hudson Brothers. Good lord.
